  • The European Union has announced further sanctions against Russia, including plans for a cap on the price of Russian oil.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Meanwhile the United States together with Poland and Bulgaria has told its citizens to leave Russia as soon as possible, fearing that its dual citizens might get caught up in the mass mobilisation.
This is all in response to Vladimir Putin who has doubled down on the war effort after recent setbacks on the battlefield.

you're not thinking clearly.... by doing this russia is trying to demo that they can hit other lines.... there are other lines crossing this one that have nothing to do with russia... yet russia is signalling it can hit.... however, that would demand a nato response.
the mere threat that lines COULD be disrupted pushes gas up... which pushes the prices of gas up... for europe. Hence why Putin hits the gas line... US will not be doing this, because it will make life harder for its allies.. which of course, it doesnt want... because that will likely make support in europe harder. Although I have to say the likelihood of success in this strategy is very low.... since most eu states see putins war as a much bigger threat than gas disruption... at this point. Putin went many bridges too far... most European countries along with US want russia contained in ukr at all costs... and consider a win for putin a very very dangerous thing.
Moving his "peace keepers" into already occupied territory with strong russian support in those regions was about as far as putin could have practically gone ... without demolishing his leverage over europe ... and his power and trade...

Not Russia, but Putin. 'Why would Putin do that?' is the question that I wish everyone would ask first. Russia has become total dictatorship now... with one man at the top who feels surrounded by enemies. He has plenty of enemies within Russia, imagined or real... We should also ask why so many oil company executives meeting strange deaths? How are they a threat to him?
This invasion of Ukraine has caused EU to stop buying gas through these pipelines and it hurts the oligarchs more then Putin who is sitting on unimaginable stolen wealth already.
Understand that some wealthy and powerful people in Russia may think 'If only Putin wasn't here, we could turn the pipelines back on and get back to business as usual'. His departure would immediately benefit them.
Well, now maybe you can see there is a clear reason why someone... not Russia, but a single person, might have a strong desire to make that option impossible.

If it turns out the West indeed has destroyed this pipeline, then it is fully rational for Russia to strike back at the West hard because such an attack is tantamount to a declaration of war on Russia and arguably even on Germany. It is only money - we will spent 100 bn on military next years, 500 bn into corona recovery etc. ... these are just numbers - if we have something it is money. Do you really think my life as a German has changed over the last years? Think again! --- Central Europe = "the densest concentration of wealth in the world." --> It is not me saying this. It is him --> ruclips.net/video/NNUriy9bq-E/видео.html AND he's right!

You know it was Russia, just because this is such an old war tactic, and doesn't Putin love those - attack yourself pretending it was the enemy to create a reason to strike them.

Very much appreciate hearing Fiona Hill's take on the sabotage. She has studied Russia all her adult life, was an exchange student when it was still the Soviet Union, and in 2017 became deputy assistant to the president and senior director for European and Russian affairs on his National Security Council staff. She understands the workings of the Russian government better than most Russian citizens do.
