I saw this video before thank goodness and a big THANKS TO YOU!!!! I believe this happened to me on my Q baja 29cc last night. Ran 2-15 min cycles for break in, put it on the ground drove low throttle for 30 ft turned around went to about 40% throttle and it bogged and died. Spark plug not working. Trouble shot for a lil bit and looked for this video, watched it, went to bed. Woke up this AM and grabbed 2 plugs and removed old washer (no indexing washers anywhere) decided to idle run for 10 min as I tuned it, worked up to 70% revs let chill and cut off. So far its good. About to put on ground and finish break in.
Yeah that is a good pipe I have put mine in storage in my rc shop, I wish that it was a 2 piece pipe set and yes it is loud. The things we do in the gas world to figure out a problem, the only thing about fixing a issue when you are done you can run tank after tank we no problems and have a great time. Great video on solving issues this type of shit is one of the main reasons people give up on the hobby most have no patience and or problem solving intellect!

Levi Hogge bro I want to tell you a trick !!! Get yourself some Lucas oil stabilizer it’s some pretty thick and tacky shit you know what I’m talking about! Get some of that shit and put it in a pump bottle or a squirter and put only a drop ! I said ONLY a drop on each one way bearing!! You will thank me in the long run. Don’t use grease don’t use engine oil just use a drop . My 2 speed is great also bro. Don’t know when I will have to rebuild but I’m just going to keep using it !! I wish there were more gears to select to use ! Would you happen to know if the black bone gears fit ??? Someday I have to try it out?
Bota, I bought that very Rovan, this week; the Rovan 305a, and found that the steering sucks---that is with the stock transmitter which I will dump and hook the buggy to my Flysky controller. But I sent for a new push-pull steering system, however. Also sent for a 990 carb. The one major challenge I have, though, is running it in my neighborhood: gawddamn thing NOISY!!! I also have a Redcat Rampage XR, gas. That's so quiet in comparison. Lol.

You should try a king motors silencer on that muffler Botta. I put that same Performance Tuned pipe on my Street Baja. It wont bring down the loudness at all but it does get rid of the tinnyness sound and replace it with a louder deeper rumble. They're only $15 and come with the blue silicone coupler and clamps. It takes some of the direct heat off the wing ends as well.
jfleming747 I’m gonna try one someday! I’ve used some in the past but I love that loud shit but most of all how well that pipe will make a stock non ported engine run ! Mine is bone stock with shit carburetor and it will lift the front up sometimes
I've got the 34cc on my newest one I purpose built for the street. Has the performance tuned muffler(like the one in this video) android I've already upgraded to a 990 and it will haul. Everything else stock except some Tarmac Busters and a 17 x 57 oblique metal gear upgrade. Will pop wheelies and do a endless donut until the tires are shredded.
85gbod cool brother thanks for the heads up. When I was upstate for the weekend with the family the quickest and easiest thing that I could do and when I’m limited with types of tools with me with only my pit bag is to ad an extra spark plug washer. It worked out for me very well because I was so pissed from this happening and I tried killing this engine constantly with hi RPMs ! I ran 2 gallons of fuel in 3 days
Those are some good things to know. I've had mine for like 2 months now and still haven't gotten a chance to break it in and play with it. It looks like it runs pretty good.

If I heard correctly you left the head gasket the way it was and just shimed spark plug, then that would (most likely) raise the compression because the piston was getting closer to the head, That might be why that engine was ballsy. Then again I'm no pro lmao, but good video man I enjoy it!

Is CAM2 really needed for these engines? I thought the 100 octane was only beneficial for higher compression engines. Reason I ask is that the only ethanol free gas close to me is only 92 octane.
AL2 RC anything OVER 100 octane is ONLY NEEDED a Must for higher compression motors and depending on the compression of the engine you may have to use fuels like 104,108,110,112,116 octanes ?? Now from for normal compression performance engines you can run 100 and down if needed . Most important thing for these 2 strokes with diaphragm carburetors is to use ethanol free always or as much as possible because the ethanol will dry them up . If your able to get 92 ethanol free ? Go for it . I wish I still had 94 and the 98 ethanol free near me but not anymore but I can get Cam-2 100 so I will use it . Plus it smells great 👍 and it’s only safe to use and even make my engines last longer so why not?? I will just keep using what works well for me .

how were you able to tell you were banging on the plug? low performance? or you just pulled the plug and noticed it? Also what metal pull start did you install and do you have a link for the Zenoah coil. What was that black piece you ripped/cut off at 28:40?
At full wide open throttle it felt strange and it made some weird sounds almost like a engine Pinging then it would shut off then start and run like shit like if the coil dropped on to the Flywheel then it would not start again at all. When I checked the spark plug it was bent up so I replaced it with a new plug and ran it again and the same thing happened at wide open throttle. Checked the plug again and it was smashed again and thank god I did not crack my piston or blow this Rovan engine up because I was far away from my home and I wanted to bash this Baja a bit. Anyways, so I knew there something was wrong from the assembly of this engine that the squish was off so I added and it extra spark plug washer and new plug and it fired right up and she ran and ran and ran like a champ !! And it was nasty too especially for a stock Engine she would scream and I think it was because it probably has more compression because the squish was not normal. It ran great after that and still runs great today! My friend Luis has it today

Same baja I have. Brand new it had that ugly brown and yellow body. I’m sure you’ve seen it before. That pipe is crazy loud! I bought I DDM pipe with the “silencer”. My neighbors still probably hate me when I start it up.

Great video! Hey bro unfortunately this problem was the problem that blew my 30.5cc. I didn't know what was happening so I kept replacing the spark plug and at one point metal went threw the the top end and loss compression sooo eventually I'll rebuild it with the rovan 36cc head and maybe port it and make it as crazy as possible but for now it sits In a box disassembled while I'm building the 65-70cc lol but that motor was a great motor and the power is very impressive! I'd definitely buy another one!
Great Video !! ⛽️💨That Pipe does sound awesome 👍🏻 John 2 things. Have people save their money and just use Solder to check Squish it works great. Then measure with Micrometer or Caliper. No rocks or small stones can get in and they have a nylon very strong pawl that does not beat up your flywheel like the metal ones do.

I've just got a second hand Baja 26standard engine with oversized rear wheels.will the oversized wheels(compared to yours)be a problem with torque,balance ???
Great suggestions! If you can't do either, or you just like the Tires, go for a lower Pinion/Spur Gear set, possibly a 59/15 set.... With the smaller Engine, that gearing should let that Buggy pull HARD!

Rc Dungeon Rc Dungeon my friend Carlos got the same 30.5 Rovan Baja 5B on the same day and the same color black and all and his was no problem. After I added a second washer to my spark plug I ran the shit out of this engine and she runs really good !! Most people would have had put a hole in the piston so I hope this video will help them!!!! At the end of the day you still got yourself a great RC for a great price so you can always install a nice Gizmo 30.5 or Bartolone or a OBR ? So just get started then you will start learning and upgrading as you go

John, I've Double Shimmed Spark Plugs on Race Engines back in the Day. It's one of those things that you sometimes have to do, to save an Expensive, highly Tuned Engine, from tearing itself Apart!! 😱💥💥😵 You bring up a VALUABLE Point Brother... To get into 1/5 Scale Gas - you absolutely CANNOT have a "RTR" mentality! Besides removing ALL metal to metal Screws and Putting Loctite on them... You should ALSO take a Close look at your Engine! Give it a squirt or two of oil into the Cylinder. Then SLOWLY crank the Pull Start (preferably in a quiet area), and feel for any resistance (besides compression), and LISTEN for any metallic contact, knocking, or anything that might not seem right. NEXT (and I credit You for giving me the idea), get a small Depth Gauge. I still have a Pro Version - but, you could go to the local Auto Parts Store and get a cheap Tire Depth Gauge. It's a small device with a sliding ruler in the middle, used for measuring the depth of the Grooves in your Tires. For all intents and purposes, this will work for this.... Remove your Spark Plug. Place the Flat of the Depth Gauge flush against the top of the Head, centered over the Spark Plug hole. Keep firm pressure on the Gauge, while slowly cranking the Engine past Top Dead Center (Piston up as far as it will go, for those who might not know). [This is probably easier with a second person to crank the Engine!] What you're doing here, is measuring where the Spark Plug would HIT the Piston. Next, you want to measure the Plug, from Gasket to the bottom of the Electrode - with the Spark Plug Gap set .010-015" MORE than the specs call for. The distance of the Depth you measured, HAS TO BE MORE than the length of the Spark Plug, from Gasket Ring to Bottom of the Electrode. That is critical. *If it is not longer than the Spark Plug Depth -* then you NEED to do one of two things..... 1. Use a second Spark Plug Gasket Ring - or if you're able, buy a Spark Plug with a shorter Depth. 2. (More complex but better) Replace the Head Gasket with a thicker one. That involves measuring the thickness of the Gasket you removed. The new Gasket will have to be the thickness of the old one PLUS the additional amount you'll need to clear the Spark Plug Electrode. You'll likely need a Pro Shop like DDM or O'Neill Brothers Racing. They Stock multiple thicknesses, and should KNOW exactly what the right one you'll need will be. You don't really want to go TOO (not 'to'! 😜) thick on the Head Gasket. Your Clearance will be good, but going too thick will lower your Compression Ratio! THAT'S a Power Killer, and should be avoided. When it's all reassembled, be Sure to measure Again! You don't want to go through all that work, only to end up with the SAME problem! I outlined all of that, because our Brrrrraaap Brother John 💥💥, loves doing things like a Professional... THAT is how a Professional handles a problem like that! 😊😉☕🍺🍺 THANK YOU Brother! Yea rovan i just got the buggy 36cc and its been on my work table more than the road😭 having carb issues flooding and fouling plugs only have a half of tank of fuel in it not much fun!!! But i do like working on it my first RC ever and i am 60yrs old thanks to you and your videos i got the bug hasnt start in 3 days and today it was going to start and the fing pull start broke!!! Wtf this little buggy not giving me any love after all that cash i spent on it and yes i am in the dog house for buying it.

If your done with break in ? Lean the low speed needle and when your idle goes up lower the idle screw ! Also gap your coil because they drop and loctite!! Your engine will run all day especially that 36! If you were my neighbor I would set that bitch up right now because I feel like Braaaaaping
BOTAJELL hey thanks for getting back to me 😀 well i did my break in pound for pound the way you said in your break in videos my wife ask me why i was going to home depot so much lately and i had to get the heat gun temp gun hex wrenches ect well she didnt know that i had a lil baby buggy hidden in my garage lol. I almost melted the top of eng cover i didnt know it was plastic but the first start 2 pulls should i say any more!!! Did all the warm ups and cool downs thats when i got busted By my wife !! Wtf is that thing where u get it you know the rest!!! Well anyway when i was doing the test drives it ran good and fastvfor 1/2throttle but when i hit the breaks it would shut off so i raise the idle a bit it worked great then it just shut of and never started again!!! Like the buggy said get me out of this town or something i live in Camden county nj. Should i say any more!!! I love that phrase!!!
BOTAJELL oh by the way i checked the plugs firing i check the coil it was nice and tight but i lost my gauge when i stop working on small engines (lawnmowers) where can i get one i saw it on one of the videos but it was before i got my buggy and now i been looking for that video cant find it. I have the same issue. pull broke twice on me. The ignition coil has probably come loose and is rubbing on the flywheel.They are known for that. Mine has loosened up twice even after using red thread lock. Replace the the flywheel with a non easy start,the 30cc one is exactly the same,and get the old style pull assembly with the aluminum prawl. Also if yours has the stock carb probably a 1191 even though it may be listed 1107 look on side of it and I bet it's a 1191 stamped. The rovan's and king motors all have clone carbs on them. I know they are marked as walbro,but if you order one from them it comes in a bag. If your walbro carb isn't in a factory husqvarna box it's a clone. Go to DDM and by a genuine wal bro. I use 990's on everything,but It dosent have a choke. If you need a choke buy a 997 or 1107(from DDM only!) Spend a little extra $ and buy either of them modded with the throttle shaft bushings it will keep alot more debris out. Also but you some ngk CMR7H plugs. DDM has them for 3.99ea. Rovan wants $9 for them.. WTF right. Don't get me wrong Dan is awsome he doesn't build them he just sells them. He's a honest dude though if you have problems with your buggy you think is a factory issue he will replace it for you,or give you a discount. These buggy's rock after you work the bugs out and replace a few parts. Same pipe I have it's loud as hell I put a silencer on it. Dan at rovan/king motors sells one for $15 just as good as DDM's carbon silencer at 1/2 the price.

I got a question about my rovan Baja. It's the 27.5 and I went through break in threadlock everything and after driving it for about 4 months I went out one day after installing the same pipe in the video and it almost sounds like it's hitting "rev limiter". Replaced clutch due to being quite worn but does the same thing. Any ideas?

Yes you can do that if you want but there is no need ! I’ll just add an extra washer on this engine! I’m happy how this engine is performing and how well it’s sealed No leaks! If I ever remove this head off this engine??? You best believe there will be a E.S.P. Head kit going on it !! DDM sells many head kits that I can use and my Local Hobby Store also carries Head Kits in Stock at all times so I’m covered nothing to worry about.

Simple quick fix just adding an extra spark plug washer will fix the problem and that engine will run all day and scream all day !! I want to try that pipe out on another engine to see how that engine will perform! Monday I may call Dan and order me one so I won’t have to remove this one
Most likely the compression is more than a stock one of those because of the Head gasket or maybe The head was over torked Resulting in more power and bottom end

Sycomotorider there all good as long the RC can kick Ass and stay running! After I fixed this issue I had , this engine can kick ass all day and whatever engine you decide to do in the future? It will perform very well with this pipe that comes with this model for sure No Questions. I also love the 5SC and I need to get back to it one of these days . You may like a 4 wheel drive better or you may like a 2 ? I like them all because they all feel and perform different

Hiya john can you tell me what's the best thick durable outwears to get for heavy dusty use john iv built myself a little motocross track and it's loving it haha :-) but I'm constantly having to wipe dust of my air filter every 30mins just to keep it running I'm needing to get nice thick nylon type I think can you tell me what one's to look at plus can you tell me what silicone spray you use on your outwears john it's starting to get a bite wet weather over here in Scotland and have to be prepared for the wet session lol do you run your basher buggys all year by any chance

If your spark plug gets squished by your piston ? Add a second spark plug washer to your spark plug to raise your plug higher if you don’t want to replace your head gasket

Bota, I bought that very Rovan, this week; the Rovan 305a, and found that the steering sucks---that is with the stock transmitter which I will dump and hook the buggy to my Flysky controller. But I sent for a new push-pull steering system, however. Also sent for a 990 carb. The one major challenge I have, though, is running it in my neighborhood: gawddamn thing NOISY!!! I also have a Redcat Rampage XR, gas. That's so quiet in comparison. Lol.

You should try a king motors silencer on that muffler Botta. I put that same Performance Tuned pipe on my Street Baja. It wont bring down the loudness at all but it does get rid of the tinnyness sound and replace it with a louder deeper rumble. They're only $15 and come with the blue silicone coupler and clamps. It takes some of the direct heat off the wing ends as well.

I've got the 34cc on my newest one I purpose built for the street. Has the performance tuned muffler(like the one in this video) android I've already upgraded to a 990 and it will haul. Everything else stock except some Tarmac Busters and a 17 x 57 oblique metal gear upgrade. Will pop wheelies and do a endless donut until the tires are shredded.

When I was upstate for the weekend with the family the quickest and easiest thing that I could do and when I’m limited with types of tools with me with only my pit bag is to ad an extra spark plug washer. It worked out for me very well because I was so pissed from this happening and I tried killing this engine constantly with hi RPMs ! I ran 2 gallons of fuel in 3 days
Those are some good things to know. I've had mine for like 2 months now and still haven't gotten a chance to break it in and play with it. It looks like it runs pretty good.

If I heard correctly you left the head gasket the way it was and just shimed spark plug, then that would (most likely) raise the compression because the piston was getting closer to the head, That might be why that engine was ballsy. Then again I'm no pro lmao, but good video man I enjoy it!

Is CAM2 really needed for these engines? I thought the 100 octane was only beneficial for higher compression engines. Reason I ask is that the only ethanol free gas close to me is only 92 octane.
AL2 RC anything OVER 100 octane is ONLY NEEDED a Must for higher compression motors and depending on the compression of the engine you may have to use fuels like 104,108,110,112,116 octanes ?? Now from for normal compression performance engines you can run 100 and down if needed . Most important thing for these 2 strokes with diaphragm carburetors is to use ethanol free always or as much as possible because the ethanol will dry them up . If your able to get 92 ethanol free ? Go for it . I wish I still had 94 and the 98 ethanol free near me but not anymore but I can get Cam-2 100 so I will use it . Plus it smells great 👍 and it’s only safe to use and even make my engines last longer so why not?? I will just keep using what works well for me .

how were you able to tell you were banging on the plug? low performance? or you just pulled the plug and noticed it? Also what metal pull start did you install and do you have a link for the Zenoah coil. What was that black piece you ripped/cut off at 28:40?
At full wide open throttle it felt strange and it made some weird sounds almost like a engine Pinging then it would shut off then start and run like shit like if the coil dropped on to the Flywheel then it would not start again at all. When I checked the spark plug it was bent up so I replaced it with a new plug and ran it again and the same thing happened at wide open throttle. Checked the plug again and it was smashed again and thank god I did not crack my piston or blow this Rovan engine up because I was far away from my home and I wanted to bash this Baja a bit. Anyways, so I knew there something was wrong from the assembly of this engine that the squish was off so I added and it extra spark plug washer and new plug and it fired right up and she ran and ran and ran like a champ !! And it was nasty too especially for a stock Engine she would scream and I think it was because it probably has more compression because the squish was not normal. It ran great after that and still runs great today! My friend Luis has it today

Great video! Hey bro unfortunately this problem was the problem that blew my 30.5cc. I didn't know what was happening so I kept replacing the spark plug and at one point metal went threw the the top end and loss compression sooo eventually I'll rebuild it with the rovan 36cc head and maybe port it and make it as crazy as possible but for now it sits In a box disassembled while I'm building the 65-70cc lol but that motor was a great motor and the power is very impressive! I'd definitely buy another one!

John 2 things. Have people save their money and just use Solder to check Squish it works great. Then measure with Micrometer or Caliper.
Another thing is the pullstart I use because of all the guys that use them and swear by them that I learned about at the East Coast Nationals.

These do not have completely open slots they call them anti rock slots. No rocks or small stones can get in and they have a nylon very strong pawl that does not beat up your flywheel like the metal ones do.

Great suggestions! If you can't do either, or you just like the Tires, go for a lower Pinion/Spur Gear set, possibly a 59/15 set....
With the smaller Engine, that gearing should let that Buggy pull HARD!

Rc Dungeon Rc Dungeon my friend Carlos got the same 30.5 Rovan Baja 5B on the same day and the same color black and all and his was no problem. After I added a second washer to my spark plug I ran the shit out of this engine and she runs really good !! Most people would have had put a hole in the piston so I hope this video will help them!!!! At the end of the day you still got yourself a great RC for a great price so you can always install a nice Gizmo 30.5 or Bartolone or a OBR ? So just get started then you will start learning and upgrading as you go

John, I've Double Shimmed Spark Plugs on Race Engines back in the Day. It's one of those things that you sometimes have to do, to save an Expensive, highly Tuned Engine, from tearing itself Apart!! 😱💥💥😵
You bring up a VALUABLE Point Brother... To get into 1/5 Scale Gas - you absolutely CANNOT have a "RTR" mentality!
Besides removing ALL metal to metal Screws and Putting Loctite on them...
You should ALSO take a Close look at your Engine! Give it a squirt or two of oil into the Cylinder. Then SLOWLY crank the Pull Start (preferably in a quiet area), and feel for any resistance (besides compression), and LISTEN for any metallic contact, knocking, or anything that might not seem right.
NEXT (and I credit You for giving me the idea), get a small Depth Gauge. I still have a Pro Version - but, you could go to the local Auto Parts Store and get a cheap Tire Depth Gauge.
It's a small device with a sliding ruler in the middle, used for measuring the depth of the Grooves in your Tires.
For all intents and purposes, this will work for this....
Remove your Spark Plug. Place the Flat of the Depth Gauge flush against the top of the Head, centered over the Spark Plug hole.
Keep firm pressure on the Gauge, while slowly cranking the Engine past Top Dead Center (Piston up as far as it will go, for those who might not know).
[This is probably easier with a second person to crank the Engine!]
What you're doing here, is measuring where the Spark Plug would HIT the Piston.
Next, you want to measure the Plug, from Gasket to the bottom of the Electrode - with the Spark Plug Gap set .010-015" MORE than the specs call for.
The distance of the Depth you measured, HAS TO BE MORE than the length of the Spark Plug, from Gasket Ring to Bottom of the Electrode. That is critical.
*If it is not longer than the Spark Plug Depth -* then you NEED to do one of two things.....
1. Use a second Spark Plug Gasket Ring - or if you're able, buy a Spark Plug with a shorter Depth.
2. (More complex but better) Replace the Head Gasket with a thicker one. That involves measuring the thickness of the Gasket you removed. The new Gasket will have to be the thickness of the old one PLUS the additional amount you'll need to clear the Spark Plug Electrode.
You'll likely need a Pro Shop like DDM or O'Neill Brothers Racing. They Stock multiple thicknesses, and should KNOW exactly what the right one you'll need will be.
You don't really want to go TOO (not 'to'! 😜) thick on the Head Gasket. Your Clearance will be good, but going too thick will lower your Compression Ratio!
THAT'S a Power Killer, and should be avoided.
When it's all reassembled, be Sure to measure Again! You don't want to go through all that work, only to end up with the SAME problem!
I outlined all of that, because our Brrrrraaap Brother John 💥💥, loves doing things like a Professional...
THAT is how a Professional handles a problem like that! 😊😉☕🍺🍺

Yea rovan i just got the buggy 36cc and its been on my work table more than the road😭 having carb issues flooding and fouling plugs only have a half of tank of fuel in it not much fun!!! But i do like working on it my first RC ever and i am 60yrs old thanks to you and your videos i got the bug hasnt start in 3 days and today it was going to start and the fing pull start broke!!! Wtf this little buggy not giving me any love after all that cash i spent on it and yes i am in the dog house for buying it.

If your done with break in ? Lean the low speed needle and when your idle goes up lower the idle screw ! Also gap your coil because they drop and loctite!! I have the same issue. pull broke twice on me. The ignition coil has probably come loose and is rubbing on the flywheel.They are known for that. Mine has loosened up twice even after using red thread lock. Replace the the flywheel with a non easy start,the 30cc one is exactly the same,and get the old style pull assembly with the aluminum prawl. Also if yours has the stock carb probably a 1191 even though it may be listed 1107 look on side of it and I bet it's a 1191 stamped. The rovan's and king motors all have clone carbs on them. I know they are marked as walbro,but if you order one from them it comes in a bag. If your walbro carb isn't in a factory husqvarna box it's a clone. Go to DDM and by a genuine wal bro. I use 990's on everything,but It dosent have a choke. If you need a choke buy a 997 or 1107(from DDM only!) Spend a little extra $ and buy either of them modded with the throttle shaft bushings it will keep alot more debris out. Also but you some ngk CMR7H plugs. DDM has them for 3.99ea. Rovan wants $9 for them.. WTF right. Don't get me wrong Dan is awsome he doesn't build them he just sells them. He's a honest dude though if you have problems with your buggy you think is a factory issue he will replace it for you,or give you a discount. These buggy's rock after you work the bugs out and replace a few parts. Same pipe I have it's loud as hell I put a silencer on it. Dan at rovan/king motors sells one for $15 just as good as DDM's carbon silencer at 1/2 the price.

I got a question about my rovan Baja. It's the 27.5 and I went through break in threadlock everything and after driving it for about 4 months I went out one day after installing the same pipe in the video and it almost sounds like it's hitting "rev limiter". Replaced clutch due to being quite worn but does the same thing. Any ideas?

Yes you can do that if you want but there is no need ! I’ll just add an extra washer on this engine! I’m happy how this engine is performing and how well it’s sealed No leaks! If I ever remove this head off this engine??? You best believe there will be a E.S.P. Head kit going on it !! DDM sells many head kits that I can use and my Local Hobby Store also carries Head Kits in Stock at all times so I’m covered nothing to worry about.

Most likely the compression is more than a stock one of those because of the Head gasket or maybe The head was over torked Resulting in more power and bottom end

Sycomotorider there all good as long the RC can kick Ass and stay running! After I fixed this issue I had , this engine can kick ass all day and whatever engine you decide to do in the future? It will perform very well with this pipe that comes with this model for sure No Questions. I also love the 5SC and I need to get back to it one of these days . You may like a 4 wheel drive better or you may like a 2 ? I like them all because they all feel and perform different

If your spark plug gets squished by your piston ? Add a second spark plug washer to your spark plug to raise your plug higher if you don’t want to replace your head gasket
