Wow! I have been following your papers for past one year for my research at WPI as a Master's student as the papers were really effective to grasp valuable and contemporary information from. Just today I came across your youtube channel and went through some DV concepts. You are not only an amazing researcher but also a great speaker. Whatever I heard coming from you went straight to my long-term memory. I will be sharing your channel to my peers! They should not miss out on this interactive opportunity to learn!
Getting started can be challenging, and even I found it difficult to know where to begin! I recommend checking out this video on how to identify advisors who would be a good fit for you. ruclips.net/video/i7IvE6iXSpM/видео.html&ab_channel=Dr.LacePadilla
Reading at least 5 papers of the professor is a vital step that I didn't do that. That's probably the reason that I failed to secure so many interviews last year. Unfortunately, I am still searching for PhD positions.
@@tochiemmanuel3608 I assume we can find some free papers of each professor. Besides, the abstract of their paid articles are available free of charge. I don't read the whole paper.
Amazing content, Thank you so much for taking the time to really give an in-depth feel to reaching out to Professors, researching is a dream for me and standing out has always been intimidating as most African Universities have very little research oppurtunities for undergrads. This was really encouraging
Thank you so much for this great insight. Honestly I have been scared to send cold emails to professors because how will I stand out but this video has showed be precisely how. Thank you once again Dr. Lace.
Thank you Dr. Lace Padilla, your video inspired me a lot and motivated me to reach out a potential supervisor. Thanks to your advice he even replied to me!
Hey Dr. Padilla, great video! I've often felt intimidated by "bothering" busy professors, and this video has given me more courage. I see on most professors' websites they say that they are hiring PhD students and but also something along the lines of "Sorry I can't respond to your email if you ask me about PhD admissions, please apply directly through the department, thank you!". So I was wondering when would you advise reaching out before applying vs not reaching out and just directly applying?
That's an insightful video, Professor. I have got most of my queries cleared through this video. Thank you so much, Professor. I just want to ask one more thing that how the subject of the email should be written which will be precise for the Professor to open it?
That's a great question. From skimming the emails I've received, I don't see much variation in the subject lines. It doesn’t seem to affect whether I decide to open them or not. I’ll reach out to other professors I know to see if they have any thoughts on this.
Thank you So much. I am currently engaging a Masters in Sustainability and I am eager to do a PhD on sustainability on any topics related to societal and natural harmony.
Thankyou very much professor for making this video. One thing I may ask is that as a prospective PhD student, what documents can I attach with this email? Can I attach my CV and research papers?
thank you very much dear professor . I have listened to the whole video. the problem is that writing a sample after 20 pages is really difficult for getting admitted. if you can have some tips regarding this sample writing technique
Admittedly, I'm not in a field that requires writing samples, so my advice may not be as informative as others'. However, if your field does require a writing sample, it's important to recognize that writing will likely be a major requirement in that discipline. To succeed in such a program, you’ll need to develop strategies to write effectively and frequently. While I can't say what those strategies will be for you specifically, it's something to consider when applying. But here is a resource that includes advice on writing samples that could be useful: gdr.emory.edu/documents-GDR/Elliott%20-%20Job%20Guide.pdf
Thank you so much for this If I'm sending a cold email, does potential supervisor have to be the corresponding author in the paper mentioned? Or is it okay to mention the ones where the potential supervisor is a collaborator and not one of the main authors or something?
They do not need to be the corresponding author. It is perfectly fine to email them about any paper they have co-authored. They are likely most invested in the papers where they are the first or last author, but they will still appreciate your interest in any of their work.
I'd recommend avoiding requests for funding at the start. It's better to first ask if they have any open positions, as having open positions usually indicates they are already funded. This is an eye opener for me. I am still figuring out where to start and I am happy that I watched this video before sending those generic emails

Most of their works are not available, they have to be paid for I guess.

Go for it!
Amazingly helpful, Thank you. Can you please talk about CV and what we should highlight there? like the importance of having a publication etc.
Great idea! Will do.
Thankyou very much professor for making this video.
One thing I may ask is that as a prospective PhD student, what documents can I attach with this email?
Can I attach my CV and research papers?
Yes, definitely attach your CV, and include any published research papers. If you have an unpublished paper, it may not be necessary to include it.
Ok great 👍

why last author ? isn't first author is mostly the main author?
