The Ultimate PHEV SUV? Volvo XC90 2023 review: Family test of the plug-in hybrid EV T8

  • Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid EV SUV the ultimate seven-seat luxury SUV? This one says it on the box - it's the new Ultimate grade - so can it live up to it?
In this review, Emily Agar gets to grips with the just updated 2023 Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV - a luxury plug-in hybrid SUV model that you might have seen advertised on billboards around the place, with the tag line "All(most) electric".
That's a good indicator of what this seven-seater family SUV is all about - it has a new bigger battery and can run on electric power alone, or you can use it in combination with the turbo-petrol engine, or just use the fuel engine to charge the batteries.
It's a smart SUV, and has mind-blowingly good real-world fuel economy. But at more than $120,000 before on-road costs, it's not going to be suitable for everyone's shopping list.

I have never heard of your channel before or heard of you before but me and my wife have ordered an 2023 xc90 recharge and out of all the reviews i have seen i loved how you covered everything. as stupid as it sounds actually showing where the child seats hook up and what they look like is a huge thing for people with kids. you are literally the only reviewer i have seen that has even shown the child seat connectors, and i thank you for that. keep up the good work.

I purchased this car in November and I am loving it. With a fully charged battery I get about 29 miles in "pure electric mode" before the battery is depleted. I live in Michigan so I might get slightly more miles out of it when the heating system isn't turned on.
In hybrid mode at speeds around 70 mph the battery lasts for about 60 miles before it is depleted and has to use gasoline.
Then I get about 30 mpg.

I have the 2020 XC90 T8 and we did a trip few weeks ago. On the motorway at constant 140km/h we got 12.8 l/100km. Two adults, two kids 3 and 5 years and one bag with stuff. I'm sure a larger engine (2.8 or 3.0) would get better fuel economy.

This video lacks a bit of balance. There are some drawbacks you need to mention.
    1. It does not have a spare tyre at all. In long trips in Australia, this is a serious concern.
    2. With 22 inch wheel as the only option, the ride is still on the too firm side even with air suspension when compared to Audi Q7 and other similar options.
    3. Ventilated front seats are optional, even if in the top specs and that price point.
    4. There is no fast charging support.
    5. The rear seats can only be raised manually. Most competitors at least offer the option to make them electrical.
    6. The PHEV has the lowest ground clearance and the official wading depth is only "Up to a depth approximately level with the floor at walking speed", which translates to ~215mm, compared to 450mm in other variances.
    7. The boot space is the smallest of all variances.

Are you sure that’s a 2023 model and not a 2022? The 2023s have the google infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay is full screen. This car has the old Sensus system.
