What a coincidence. My husband was telling me about tater tot casserole a few days ago, and I had never heard of it either. He used to work as a head chef in an assisted living (elderly) home. He said all the old folks requested and loved tater tot casserole! Now he’s going to make it for me. I love all forms of potatoes 🥔❤️ Thanks for another great video!
Was wondering how many other Minnesotans I'd find. It just sounds so weird to hear it not end in hotdish lol I tried to explain to someone once the difference between hotdish and casserole. I said when it's called hotdish, the casserole dish is what you cook the hotdish in lol
At first I was worried there would not be a mixing bowl parade but was delighted when they made an appearance. This recipe sounds yummy and I am sure going to try it. Thanks Mary -- have a wonderful weekend.
Love me some tater tot casserole! I sometimes pre-bake my tots for extra all-over crunch. PS I had to restart this so many times. It kept soothing me to sleep.
Anyone who can make a 10 minute recipe into 42 minute soporific bliss is a genius. I absolutely love this - and I would never eat that many carbs! One of the best ASMR videos EVER. Thank you so much for helping us on sleepless nights!
Dear Mary, I always appreciate all your videos very much, but after watching your latest video on your other channel "Everyday Mary" I appreciate all the effort you put into it even more. I am going through something very similar to yours although for different reasons. My brain never stops, I keep thinking about the same things without being able to find a solution to my problems. I am so stress ed out and tired, so I understand you very well. I really hope you can find another job very soon. ❤❤❤ Sending you many positive thoughts! Please excuse me if I made many mistakes, but I am not a native English speaker.
Thank you so much for this video! I have two very picky toddlers and I'm always looking for new recipes to try. This is simple and looks like it would taste good. I'd probably add a bit more veggies but otherwise it's definitely going on the menu!🙂
Mary you are just adorable, everything about this is so comforting. And your sense of humour is amazing. It’s 10am in the uk, I haven’t had breakfast yet and I’m a vegetarian, I’m ready to eat this xx
Finally, someone else who hates mushroom as much as I do! I don't feel crazy now. Thanks Mary. 😌❤️ This casserole looks delicious. I really really hope #youtube gets their shit together so you can continue to earn your money and make as much content as you do. You're one of the most hard working content creators I watch and SHAME ON YOU #RUclips for not following up with her on your mistakes.
What a fab idea - I love things like shepherds pie but it's quite a labour intensive dish, this gives much the same effect but much easier. You can use that cream of chicken soup to make a sauce for a lovely chicken and onion pie too.
while i’m at odds with you as a fanatic mushroom lover, i always love your cooking videos! i would also recommend that you try making a tater tot breakfast casserole, with eggs, peppers and onions, sausage or bacon, and cheese. i don’t have a go-to recipe, but there are loads of them that you can find online. so easy and delicious and one of my favorite breakfast dishes!
One of my favorites on YT is Clair Saffitz. During her time at Bon Appetit, she did a series called "Gourmet Makes" where she try to make improved versions of popular foods. Tater Tots was one.
I loooved this video, thank you Mary 😊 And thank you so much for showing what products are exactly... I'm not in the US and am not familiar with some of the ingredients, so it helps a lot to understand the dish 🙂 And I honestly want to try to do it now
Thanks Mary for posting this video. My husband still has a junior high fixation with tater tots. This caserole would be a change of pace for me to make.
I felt a little anxiety welling because I hadn't seen your beautiful mixing bowls and THEN...phew! 😁 I love when you taste your food. Looks and sounds SO good! Gonna have to try. xoxo
In Britain, we know Tater Tots as Potato Croquettes. I recognise them from your description and when you show it on the screen. However Potato Croquettes are not as popular as chips are in Britain. We eat far more chips than any other potato based product. Other interesting comparison, we know "ground beef" in Britain as "minced beef" but it's exactly the same product. Long time subscriber, first time commenter by the way. I love your channel. All the best. 😊😊😊👍👍👍
This looks delicious Mary! I like your outfit! Yesterday was my daughter's birthday so I didn't see your video! I'm going to make this dish! Thank you for the fun video!
My dad was the same way. He didn't like food mixed up, so no casseroles for us either. (I love them now.) Now I'm craving tater tots, I'll have to get a bag.
That Worcester sauce bottle is giving me flash backs. I used to work at a Walmart and I had a 8 bottles in a pack if I remember correctly, that were on a cart to go to the back room becaue the shelves and top stock were full...I turned a corner and something knocked it off and busted a couple of the bottles...the back room smelled like a stake house for about a good hour or so. 😂😂😂😂
I live in Germany and you cannot get tater tots here. What we have here, and perhaps an equivalent, is what we call Kroketten. They're basically mashed potatoes in the same form as tator tots.
If you're looking for a new recipe to try, I had found one my mom cut out of a magazine for Chocolate-earl grey cake. I don't know which magazine but by the looks of the page, it might be Real Simple magazine. It's not a difficult recipe IMO but I had never heard of one using tea in it and my stove/oven isn't working at the moment, so I can't try it out.
I find that the tater tots are just a little bit too bulky so we use shredded hash brown O’Brien, which has onions and peppers and then when we top ours, it makes it so much better
I heard sometimes it calls for freshly shredded because the bag shred is coated with a cornstarch mix to help the shreds not stick together in the bag and the bagged can taste different than the freshly shredded. So I'm assuming that's why they said to freshly shred it maybe because of the taste. I've never noticed a taste diff tho. This dish looks good tho. 👍
I've heard the stuff they use to keep shredded cheese from sticking to itself also keeps it from melting the same way, so that might be it. Though similarly, I've never really noticed a difference between pre-shredded Mozzarella and what I've shredded for pizza, so maybe it's more noticeable with other types of cheese?
Agree...very popular in the Midwest! I'm from Minnesota and this is a standard in most households with those that grew up here. Mary was right...so many ways to make it. I've had some that I really liked and others not so much. Thanks for making this nostalgic "hot dish", Mary! 😄
I dislike mushrooms too!! I'm the only person out of all of my friends and family that doesn't like them. I also can't stand restaurants that put mushrooms in EVERYTHING!
I lived in Minnesota until I was almost 9. We called them hotdishes and then we moved to Ohio. I think that's when we start calling them casseroles. Just like we used to call sofas davenports. Crazy, huh!
Visually not the prettiest - made me think of the legendary scene in Friends, when Rachels pages stuck together in the cookbook 🙂But great video as usual, and I am sure it tasted just fine 🙂
I ordered this at a restaurant in Wisconsin once. They claimed it was supposed to be spicy. I can't go beyond medium in salsa so don't do a lot of spicy. I think that dish was less spicy than mild salsa lol.
We also use recipes that don't use cheese because my boyfriend is a weirdo that doesn't like it. He'll eat it on a few things like pizza and enjoys it. My theory is he had a traumatic experience (s) as a kid, being forced to eat things that were gross that just so happened to have cheese.
I like the TASTE of mushrooms but not the texture. I'm big on umami flavor. I feel you so much! if it has even the tiniest bit of mushroom that is not ground into a fine powder I tend to gag lol
Great video, I personally like using cream of celery soup and don't care for the texture the low sodium gives, but try it and I'm gonna try the cream of chicken soup too ! Thanks Mary

In Minnesota we call it Tater Tot Hot Dish 🤣 It’s a staple for most households! We almost never use the word casserole….only hot dish.
Was wondering how many other Minnesotans I'd find. It just sounds so weird to hear it not end in hotdish lol I tried to explain to someone once the difference between hotdish and casserole. I said when it's called hotdish, the casserole dish is what you cook the hotdish in lol

I'm going to tell you Mary and my brother highly disagrees with me. If Thanksgiving dinner doesn't have a buffet of casseroles... I ain't coming.
if only tater tot casserole was a thanksgiving dish... id celebrate every month lol much better than green bean casserole imo

That casserole looks yummy! It reminds be of shepards pie but with the tater tots instead of mashed potatoes! 😋
I’ve been having a rough couple of months and now have Covid, feeling depression kick in, but found a moment of peace watching this video, thanks!
Covid is just a mild flu. You’ll be fine

Mushrooms are so disgusting 😊
They’re the worst!
I’m allergic to mushrooms, so it’s nice to see a recipe without them!
I hate them too! I was so happy when she grabbed that cream of chicken soup in Walmart! 😅
