  • (22 Sep 2018) AT TRIBECA TV FESTIVAL, MERYL STREEP WALKS RED CARPET WITH TRACY ULLMAN BEFORE LIVE INTERVIEW
Meryl Streep posed briefly on the red carpet before interviewing her longtime friend Tracy Ullman at the Tribeca TV Festival on Friday (21 SEPTEMBER) in New York.
Streep didn't talk to press, but Ullman was excited that the Oscar-winner would interview her after premiering as upcoming episode from the new season of "The Tracy Ullman Show."
Known for her impersonations of popular figures, Ullman laughed at the idea that Streep was interviewing her because she was a target on the new season.
"Noooo. No. I think they just asked her, and she was free. It's lovely. What a treat," Ullman said.
While not making fun of Streep, Ullman promised the new season will be edgier.
    Here's why.
"Because I did more topical stuff. I didn't shoot stuff, and then wait three months before the show went out, I sort of put stuff in a day before the show transmitted, so it's kind of immediate, and especially, as I said to Avery, with this news cycle, it's like, wow, it changes so quickly. You got to get these shows out," Ullman said.
But Ullmann says it's relatively current, since the news cycle changes quicker than ever.
"I hadn't done a show yesterday. It's gone out originally on the BBC, so it's a little behind. But it's about this year in politics, Brexit, in particularly, and Europe being a big factor. Teresa May Facetimes Donald Trump a lot. And Angela Merkel faces Trump - Facetimes Donald Trump a lot. And lots of other pieces I think are pertinent for this year," Ullman said.
While Ullman provides a humorous escape to the relentless news cycle, she's reluctant to say it's therapeutic.
"Some form of therapy? I don't like to say that. I hope - I mean, I 've always had a great, loyal audience. I'm not a stand-up comedian. I'm a character actress. I always have been," Ullman said.
She added: "I plan on doing it until I'm 90 like Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench, hopefully. Well, they're not 90 yet. Girls, I didn't say you were 90 yet."
Dench, is one of the roles Ullman will reprise in the new season, along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and spunky Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. New impersonations will include British Prime Minister Theresa May and French First Lady Brigitte Macron.
The new season premiere September 28 on HBO.
