Interesting, women had inheritance rights in ancient Padan-Aram. I wonder if that was common in that era and locale. I had always presumed the idols were molten images in gold and silver and Rachel was simply "robbing" her father or acquiring her inheritance underhandedly.
Jacob is a portrait of the heart that cares for nothing except for Gods promises. He’s willing to “hate his father, brother, mother etc” to seek after YHWH. Esau wants what is in front of him.
Multiple wives is not prohibited in Torah, but it never ends well in scripture does it - however it’s always placed upon the person it never seems to be the direction of the husband (Abraham, Jacob).
Jacob was after Gods promises
Imperfect yes - but I don’t believe that is the purpose of highlighting his actions it’s the opposite. He is untethered by the trappings of this world.
I see Jacob as our example which Yeshua confirms in his exhortation of what it takes to be His disciple.
Laban recognizes Jacob’s position and blessing with YHWH. So He can at least see that this man would be good to take both his daughters. He even says it is good she would be with Jacob rather than give her to other men.
He has different gods but clearly recognizes the authenticity of what the God if Jacob has to offer. So from a fleshly place Laban is trying to possess the blessings of Jacob’s God without the devotion or dedication of his own life to YHWH or forsaking his other gods.
Rachel is barren. She doesn’t comprehend that God is the opener of the womb, she blames Jacob, this shows a lack of her understanding of YHWH. She was raised with these other gods. I believe her barrenness and her still clinging to the idols are absolutely connected. You hear Leah cry out to YHWH each birth and Rachel cries to Jacob to give her a son. Rachel is a picture of lack of single-mindedness and idolatry. She has growth that needed to occur to produce fruit.
Even if it was due to inheritance it shows her lack of trust.
Laban not checking under her during her menstruation actually shows us an understanding of Torah and uncleanness, which Laban respected.
Leah hiring Jacob for the “love apples” - The unloved one is the one who’s firstborn son has the fruit of love, only when the loved one who has an idolatry problem is given this “fruit of love” to the first wife does the first wife have intimate connection again with the husband.
There is typology all over that. Regarding Yeshua and the role of Israel to be light to the nations, the two houses, etc.
The translation “mandrakes” doesn’t really make the lights go off, it’s not until “love apples” can you see it, as absurd as it is to read “love apples” repeatedly out loud to your kids when going over the Torah portion 😂
