    2: Clawdia: Black and white with a beauty mark. She has thumbs... wouldn't surprise me if she stole them. She's pure chaos but she purrs and cuddles me so it's fine.
    3: Chunky: Black with a white patch on his chest. Has thumbs. Needy, crusty, whiny baby... can't live without him.

      Emily, have you tried cat pheromones? Feliway for example? And maybe some herbal mixtures that calm down or influence the cat's emotions? A long time ago, I had a similar situation with my two cats: one of them ran away and got into fights with free-living cats. We found him the same day, nothing major happened to him, but then he attacked our other cat very aggressively. For some time I kept the cats separate, both had Feliway turned on in their rooms and were given drops (German Dr Bach RESCURA Tropfen). It took a while, in stages, but it didn't last longer than 5 months. Don't give up on Pear yet if you have the conditions to keep them apart and if you have the strength (mentally) to do so, because I know it must be damn hard on your heart. I'm sending you lots and lots of good thoughts, and I keep my fingers crossed for all the Furry Four.

      I did and it only worked on the babies lol
      I definitely tried everything I could find online that isn't literal medication. She looked like she was improving at one point (feeding both side of a door, etc) but she regressed completely and it hasn't improved since. I genuinely don't see her stopping at this point :(

      @@BookswithEmilyFox Damn, that's sad ;( The only thing that comes to my mind is that sterilization has exacerbated some disease in the cat? She doesn't look sick (she looks wonderful) but cats sometimes don't show at all that they are sick or that they are in pain, so maybe there is a problem with some discomfort? A cat behaviorist would be useful, some @JacksonGalaxy from book tube ;)

      How long has it been since she started to push away her babies? My cat and his mom loves each other and whenever he is visiting my parents (where she lives) they hang together like BFFs. 😸 It is normal though, for cat mommies to drive away her babies when they have reach that age

    • @BookswithEmilyFox

      She was rejecting them "normally" at 2-3months but then she had her first vet appointment. Ever since then she's been attacking them. I tried to reintroduce them based on videos online over three months and she improved a bit then regressed. She attacks the door they are behind at this point... I've tried everything. Feliways, slow reintro, getting them all fixed, etc. I don't want to rehome her but at this point she isn't improving and it's a lot.

    I’m sorry honey. That’s actually happened with one of my cats - she suddenly decided she hated them and she viciously attacked my other 3 cats and despite spending 3 months with two different cat behaviourists to try and get her to get along with the cats and essentially “reintroduce” them ( as I have to keep her separated at all times from the others) it was unsuccessful. They told me that some cats prefer to be on their own, they find living with other cats stressful. So I’m in the same situation as you, my heart is broken, I don’t want to rehome her, but she doesn’t want to be around the other cats so I need to find the right home where she can live her best life. Sending you love during this awful situation x

We kept in contact with the family and she was adored, spoiled, and very happy. It was the right thing for her.

    I do the same under stress, switch to nonfiction. Maybe because it usually doesn't engage my emotions the way fiction does. And I won't dwell on this, but sorry to hear that Pear may have to be rehomed. Just know that you rescued her when she was pregnant and neglected, gave her a safe and loving home, and tried absolutely everything to make it work between her and the kittens. She is better off and looking much healthier because of you.

    Rehoming is never a bad thing if its in the best interest of the animal, Pear and the babies are miserable, placing her somewhere where she can be in a situation that makes her happy is for the best. Our cat was the same, miserable in the foster home, didn't get on with her own mother or the other cats, she's blossomed here as an only cat. We were told she was undersocialised and wary of humans, within a couple of weeks she was a lapcat. But the foster home knew what they were looking for and made sure we also knew what we were taking on

  • @januaryinthechair
    @januaryinthechair 11 месяцев назад +4

    I'm sorry to hear, it sounds very stressful. No expert and every cat is different but for what it is worth I adopted a pregnant stray and kept on two of her kittens and at first she was the same - would not let them be anywhere near her, aggressive, as they have to be to stop the kittens from latching on - but she did calm down and now, she is absolutely fine so long as they respect her space and boundaries (fair!), which they have largely learned to do due to those early days when she went for them if they tried to get too close. We've had a very happy six years with decreasing bops on the nose! I hope it works out but whatever happens you've given them all love and care, and kept them safe; whatever decision you make will be the right one. Good luck!
    Edit: she is also especially fine with them over the winter because her love of comfort outweighs her love of personal space, haha. But it did take some time to get there.

    I don't think you really need to rehome pear, they don't have to like each other to live together, the longer you keep them separated the more intense their dislike for each other will get. Ive known multiple people who've had cats that don't like each other they just avoid each other and only occasionally fight but not badly. I had to take in my sisters kitten because she moved overseas and my old cat hated her for months, I kept them separated for a couple months and it just made it worse, the vet said to just let them fight it out as long as they don't seriously hurt each other which is very unlikely its fine. Now a year later they don't mind each other just the occasional hiss if the kitten gets too close

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  11 месяцев назад +3

      It’s not just disliking them. She loses her shit completely at them. I tried reintroducing them slowly over 3 months, I tried feliway, I tried just letting them together thinking “fuck it” and she just keep yelling louder and louder and hitting them while hissing. The kittens don’t even look at her and she goes insane. It’s not fair to them either but it stresses her so bad. It’s not them provoking her, she just won’t leave them alone. I’ve tried.

I am still ashamed of it and not a lot of people know about her. But it was the best decision for everyone. She got to move from tiny apartment to a house with kids who played with her all the time. She could go in and out as she wanted and they took her out for trips on a leash. They used to send me a lot of puctures years after they got her from me. I felt so bad but it was the best decision I could make for her and for me. Now I have four cats but it took a lot of time to get to that. If she is stressed, it is best to find her a new home. I'm so sorry about what you must be going through with Pear disliking the kittens. I've been following the development of Pear story since you decided to let her in and take care of her kitties, so I imagine the current situation with them not getting along must be overwhelming. But you're doing everything in your power! You're the best cat mamma, so you know. Give Pear a little more time, but if neither she, nor the kittens, nor you are happy keeping that situation and all the family members' quality of living is being at stake, I think it's fair to consider rehoming Pear, for her and your own happiness. Stress is a tricky thing that can taint everything we love. Pear seems a wonderful cat, loving and sweet, and we can see how it affects you the sole idea of letting her go. I'm so sorry. Lots of good thoughts to you. I hope tables turn and things get better, but if they don't, all my strength for the tough decision and the bestest of luck to find Pear a great home 💜

    Don’t give up, Emily! My cat Emma hated other cats - HATED them - but eventually she got to where she could share communal porch space with my neighbor’s two cats. In my experience, some adult cats have zero patience with kittens and/or younger animals. My neighbor’s cats were kittens when Emma decided she didn’t like them. Once they got older and more chilled out, it was WAY better. Please give it time! I hate for mama cat to lose her home over this, especially since she picked you as her person!!

      She has been like that for 4 months now… I’ve definitely given it time sadly. I’m waiting a bit longer since the babies had surgery 3 weeks ago so it might still help

    • @janeb9698
      @janeb9698 11 месяцев назад

      I was going to say wait until the babies are two years old. Then they’re adults. Before then, they’ve still got kitten energy and she’s telling them she wants no part of it. That’s my opinion and/but you have to do what makes sense to you!

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  11 месяцев назад +1

      It would make sense if they were after her but they completely ignore her and she attacks them. They can be napping and she's the one going for them :/

      I know, I hear you - cats can be exasperating. So many times I’m like “Why? Why?” (Like last night when my cat Oz decided to pee all over a fleece blanket that was folded neatly on one corner of my bed.) If only we could reason with them. As for your situation, all I can say is that adult cats are very territorial, especially the girls. Maybe she just wants to make it extra, SUPER clear that the kittens are weaned and there’s no going back.

    Jackson Galaxy does a lot of work with cats. He also has many videos on youtube. Two that might help with mama cat is "How to deal with cat fights" and "How to Introduce Cats". Even with cats that know each other, he says you may have to do the slow introduction process. It might be worth a try anyway. I can only imagine how sad it is thinking you may have to rehome her.

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  11 месяцев назад

      I followed his method and slowly reintroduced them over 3 months. She improved at first and then regressed. She now attacks the door they are behind. Get get past that point :(

    • @auroradee9642
      @auroradee9642 11 месяцев назад

      That is dissappointing to hear and I wonder why she regressed afterwards. Have they switched rooms too, so they can be around each others smells and/or a screen door. I am probably only giving you redundant ideas unfortunately. I will be hopeful 🤞they can be reintroduced at some point. Positive thoughts your way ☺ @@BookswithEmilyFox

    How long has it been since Pear and the gang have been fixed? It might work itself out ….
    “This is the territory of the mother. If she doesn't chase the kittens away, she has to search for a new territory. Female cats sometimes live together, but male cats are not social and if she doesn't chase her kittens away, one of her sons would soon take over the territory and chase her away.
    Her daughters will soon be sexually mature, if they aren't already. If she allows her daughters to stay, they would probably mate the same tomcat and would have litters at the same time. This reduces genetic variance, which increases the risk of genetic diseases and general weaknesses and forces several new mothers into a food competition. Cats won't move too far from their litter, so several mother cats must hunt in the same small area, where the food might not be enough for all.
    Her sons will also be sexually mature and want to mate. If a son mates with her or with her daughters, this is inbreeding and poses an even greater risk for genetic diseases and mutations.
    So mother cats first care for their kittens as long as those need her support, and then chase them away when they become mature to avoid inbreeding and food competition.
    I would add that mother cats can become affectioante with their kittens again after separation, once they have established their own territories and such. The period where they actively drive them away is their instincts, once that is over they can get friendly again. “

      That’s my last hope! The vet had told me to see how she was a month after her surgery but I guess the same logic can be applied to the babies… they’re three weeks post op so it’s not looking good but I want to give her another month :/
