    In July 2002 Riddlesden residents called in the ombudsman because Skipton Properties had decided that two storey houses would be better replaced by three storey houses.
    In 2003 Skipton Properties admitted building three storey houses where they only had permission for two storey, but claimed it was a mistake. They applied for retrospective planning consent, and got it. Brian Verity claimed that it only matched what he'd done at Cowling.

    I can confirm as a volounteer on the Worth Valley Railway Near By That The Mill Is To Be Demolished and houses or flats are proposed to be built on the site. It appears from talk on the railway that everyone believes it was arson but we shall wait to see. According to others the fire started on the floor where oil canisters were.

    My great Grandfather John Albert Murgatroyd Was the chief engineer and designer of this and its sister mill which was in Sykes lane half a mill away.
    Sykes mill was destroyed by fire in the 1960's
    Sad very Sad

    On the W. Brigg site at Cowling they built three storey houses where they didn't have permission to even build! The plans at the council were still under discussion, and of course were for two storey houses.
    In addition to these, there is poisoning of water courses (Fined £20,000 with £1,500 costs) and Verity's own opinion of councillors.
    "Councillors" he says, "should not be involved with planning, they can't even read plans."

    @Fireyorks theres an abandoned one in halifax, empty, but in good condition, no windows, parts of the roof missing, have a look it's on the main road going into the town near the tip , just in the bottom of the valley and there's grove mills, the ones in ingrow on ingrow lane, currently demolished but one is still up and used for appartments

    Another Mill lost!!! There is only one left in Haworth now. I can remember working at Ebor mills, what a sad day to see such a great building raised to the ground. Skipton properties owned it???? Hmmmmm

    Skipton Properties
    It's but a few years since CDC had a brush with the famous Skipton Properties, indeed Skipton Properties have had a few acts brought to public notice. Here are some of them:
    Having originally applied for two storey houses in Long Lee they built three storey houses, in breach of planning.
    In 2002 officers pursued a breach of planning against Skipton Properties for work in Kildwick, along with illegal work in demolition and raising land.

    @philldavison Cheers Phil, there is a lot of local affection for the old place. its a testament to that interest that this footage is the 27th most discussed video in the news and politics section on you tube today.

    Fire ravaged a Haworth mill last night leaving most of the building gutted.
    The top three floors of Ebor Mill, in Mytholmes, were destroyed during the blaze.
    The fire raged for more than four hours at the mill, home to long-established company Airedale Springs.

    Well done for capturing the different phases of this fire. It is such a shame, all the old mill buildings are disappearing.
    Really excellent footage though.
    I don't think the outcome reflects the efforts of all the firefighters who were trying their best to save the building.

    Was spending the weekend in lovely Haworth and saw from digs window -it was very scary. Not knowing the area I was interested to hear comments about the mill owners. Very strange! The firemen deserve a pat on the back. Saw them this morning when leaving to come home - they looked exhausted. Good filming. What a shame you have lost a lovely building.

    Fair play the fire service had one hell of a job trying to contain this. Once it took hold of the fourth floor there was no going back though. Within half an hour the roof collapsed and the old mills fate was sealed.

    all very convenient dont you think .

    @samsonsmummy Apparently its to be demolished this week, can anyone confirm?
    I saw the firemen this morning looking justifiably tired out, they were enjoying a short spell on the grass whilst the sun was shining for a few minutes.

  • @Justjayne01
    @Justjayne01 14 лет назад

    @stealthpicasso they are indeed beginning demolition. As I type I can hear the beep-beep of wagons reversing etc. it's so, so, sad. Apparently just the top three floors, but that is yet to be seen.

  • @23TC23
    @23TC23 14 лет назад

    What a crying shame - you can see why they started building them fireproof with stone floors and cast iron supports. To see how quickly this went up in 2010 with a modern fire service on hand makes you shudder to think what it was like 150 years ago.

    Such a shame, yet another beautiful, historical building gone!

  • @Bedlamar
    @Bedlamar 14 лет назад

    @th3soundguy
    On planning he has this to say:
    "The law does not stop you from building without planning permission, you merely do it at your own risk. Perhaps it's the law which is wrong, the system needs to be more accommodating."
    "The system doesn't allow for change, so you try and short circuit the system."

  • @Bedlamar
    @Bedlamar 14 лет назад

    @th3soundguy
    And what does he say about Cowling,and the three storey houses?
    We only changed the height of a few, and (don't laugh here any builders who read this) it was because the ground was bad!"
    Because of the increased costs of building extra houses at Cowling, Skipton Properties declined to build any affordable houses, houses which they had agreed to build in the planning application, and instead gave £15,000 for a skateboard park.

  • @stealthpiccasso

    @Justjayne01 Yes you are right they did indeed but they are young and its to be expected I guess and people always have throughout history enjoyed a good hanging. Its a terrible shame, another testament to our rich industrial past lying in ashes.

    @traceymadhouse Im afraid its a little late for that ... they do own it and have done for a while they submitted plans in 2008 for turning it in to residental flats ... but due to its grade 2 listing and still been in industrrial use they were declined ...... now its burnt out problem solved for skipton props .... just like bridge house mill and oakworth mills ..... big mill + fire = skipton props .... 3rd time a large mill he owns gets declind planning 3rd time it burns

  • @Bedlamar
    @Bedlamar 14 лет назад

    @1212chip Yeah i sat watching it all night ... was more about containment than putting it out . Oil and wooden floors mean there impossable to fight .
    Im sure the fire men did the best they could but from where i was sat they were only cooling the side near housing and letting the rest burn ..
