For those who don't know, the OTB Pick 4 was a $3 wager.

Very small grandstand of mostly NYers taking a quick trip up the Major Deegan (I-87) and people who drove in from the area. We'd stand outside in any weather and make noise you could see the entire race standing outside so it was great especially in the warm weather. Subway/bus meant I wasn't stuck there all night though it was a risky ride back through the bronx. Once my ride blew a tire and dropped me in Parkchester at 2:00 am Friday. I prayed, got the 6 to 125th, the 4 to 86th and was very happy to get home.

Don Sider made a career out of taking some of the most talented charges of Kopas, Waples, Davies and others to terrorize the locals at YR & RR...

Yet closers could still win there (less sharp turns), and the first-over trip was deadly. Spent much of my youth at that track or watching/betting on WOR. Saw Cam Fella dominate the Hopeful series in freezing weather at 1-20 every time out. Friend says don't bother going to the Cane because Merger will be a lock at 1-2. Didn't check the entries, find out the next day Cam Fella paid $14.60 and $8.60 to win both legs. I was pissed.

@@raygordonteacheschess5501 I could have been your buddy. I threw away a lot of money, betting on Merger vs. Cam Fella. I never did learn. I also bet Its Fritz. Cam just never impressed me. All he did was win. Hey, I was dumb----what can I tell you?

Much shorter stretch. I liked RR better. But strangely enough, I always won more at Yonkers than I did at Roosevelt.

@@geoffreycoleman3346 I went to Yonkers a lot in January 1982 for the hopeful. There was a horse named Kash Course who was 1-20 a lot and then Cam Fella was 1-20 against him. I was more than annoyed that my friend had done that acting like the race was over, and annoyed at myself for not checking. 22-1 if you parlay Cam onto himself.

@@raygordonteacheschess5501 The horse was a competitor. What else can you say? When you have your money down, you don't care how fast they go or how pretty they look. You just want to finish first. That's what Cam did, his whole career.
