Just getting into dulcimer in Australia. It is not a big scene, so your tutoring videos for beginners are wonderfully helpful. I don’t know another dulcimer player except the very famous Louisa Wise, who is from America! Thank you Stephen.
The first lessons I ever had on dulcimer were from Don Pedi, and he was playing everything in D-A-A in those days. I rarely tuned up to D-A-D early on because I had two melody strings on a a 4-string dulcimer. (One of these days I'll get around to moving one of the melody strings to double the middle instead.)
What do you do when the tablature calls for a 6-1/2 note? I can't find any explanation on how to deal w/it. I'm new with dulcimer and have a traditional diatonic w/o the 6-1/2 fret. I set the tuning for D-A-A but then, I'm confounded if there is the 6-1/2 fret in the tune. I'd like to use D-A-D too, but again same problem.

thank you…i learned a couple of new tunings…i am normally a banjo picker, the dulcimer is new for me.
I hoped that you would do some GDD. But I guess that’s just a lower tuned DAA? Thanks for any advice on that. Great video and great playing
I remember folks around Dothan, Alabama, were playing in GDD.

I have the same problem with not having the 6.5 fret and no one ever answers my questions about it either. It gets frustrating.
I'd first have to see a photo of your entire fingerboard. Email me at stephen@stephenseifert.com if you still need help.
Where can I buy a dulcimer without all the extra frets? Everyone seems to be making them with 6.5 and more.
Any builder will be happy to leave out the 6.5 and 13.5 frets. Just ask.
