- Public Enemy - Harder Than You Think
Album: How You Sell Soul To A Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul
Lyrics:
[Flavor Flav - Intro]
Yo Chuck, bust a move man
I was on my way up here to the studio, ya know what I'm sayin'?
And this brother stop me and axe me
"Yo, wassup with that brother Chuckie D? He swear he nice"
I said "Yo the brother don't swear he's nice, he KNOWS he's nice"
Ya know what I'm sayin'?
So Chuck, I got a feelin you turnin him into a Public Enemy, man
Now remember that line you was kicking to me
On the way out to LA Lounge in Queens
While we was in the car on our way to the Shop
Well yo, right now kick the bass for them brothers
And let 'em know, WHAT, GOES, ON!
[Chuck D. - overlaps last line syncing with Flav]
WHAT, GOES, ON!
Rolling Stones of the rap game, not braggin'
Lips bigger than Jagger, not saggin'
Spell it backwards, I'mma leave it at that..
That ain't got nuttin to do with rap
Check the facts, expose those cats
Who pose as heroes and take advantage of blacks
Your government's gangster, so cut the crap
A war goin on so where y'all at?
"Fight the Power" comes great responsibility
'F the Police' but who's stopping YOU from killlin me?
Disaster, fiascos over a loop by P.E
If it's an I instead of we believin TV
Spittin riches, bitches, and this new thing about snitches
Watch them asses move as the masses switches
System dissed them but barely missed her
My soul intention to save my brothers and sisters!
[Hook 4X]
Hard... (Get up!)
JUST, LIKE, DAT
[Flavor Flav - interlude]
Yeah, that's right Chuck, man
That's what you gotta do
You got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT, ya know what I'm sayin?
Cause yo, lemme tell you a lil something man
These brothers runnin around, hard-headed!
They get a lil jealous, you know what I'm sayin?
Just like that! You know, they try to bring you down wit 'em
But yo, Chuck, you got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT!
[Chuck D. - Verse Two]
Screamin gangsta twenty years later
Of course endorsed while consciousness faded
New generation believin them fables
"Gangster Boogie" on two turntables
Show no love so it's easy to hate it
Desecrated while the coroner waited
Any given Sunday, so where y'all rate it?
Wit slavery, lynchin, and them drugs infiltrated
I'm like that doll Chucky, baby
Keep comin back to live, love life like I'm crazy
Keep it movin +Rising to the Top+
+Doug Fresh+ clean livin you don't stop
Revolution means change, don't look at me strange
So I can't repeat what other rappers be sayin
You don't stand for something, you fall for anything
Harder than you think, it's a beautiful thing
[Hook]
[Flavor Flav - interlude again]
Yeah, that's right Chuck, man
That's what you gotta do
You got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT, ya know what I'm sayin?
Cause yo, lemme tell you a lil something man
These brothers runnin around, hard-headed!
They get a lil jealous, you know what I'm sayin?
Just like that! You know, they try to bring you down wit 'em
But yo, Chuck, you got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT!
[Chuck D. - Verse Three]
So it's time to leave you a preview
So you too can review what we do
20 years in this business, How You Sell Soul?
Gee whiz, people bear witness
Thank you for lettin us be ourselves
So don't mind me if I repeat myself
These simple lines be good for your health
To keep them crime rhymes on the shelf
Live love life like you just don't care
Five thousand leaders never scared
"Bring the Noise," it's 'the moment they feared'
Get up! Still a beautiful idea
[Hook]
[Chuck D. - overlaps Hook]
Get up! - Throw yo hands in the air
Get up and show no fear!
Get up if y'all really care!
P.E. 20 years, now get up!!
[Flavor Flav - Outro]

[Flavor's outro finally fades as "JUST, LIKE, DAT"
Is briefly heard thorught the song while the song fades]
56 y.o. white male in self-isolation who 'didn't like rap' when I was younger just 'discovered' Public Enemy. Oh my god this is amazing. Chuck D has the best voice on the planet. I've gone down the old-school rap/hip-hop rabbit hole on You Tube and I don't expect to surface, and I'm not sure I want to. This music is gold. Stay safe everyone :)
I hope I’m not preaching to the converted... Most of the rap/hip-hop being churned out these days is only fit for the trash. If you haven’t already, check out BIG L, BDP, Nas, Kendrick, De La Soul, Big E, Tribe Called Quest, 2Pac etc etc I could go on yet hope you enjoy. These artists in the main, produced tracks with meaning. You stay safe too bro. 🙏
For some people it just finally 'hits', u get me?
Yeah -- I listened to FOABP and takes a nation of millions back in the early 90s and I liked it OK but it was always his voice that stuck with me...now in 2020 I listened to the rest and finally figured out that it is great fucking music with great musicians and braver words than you will find elsewhere. They've got it all, beautiful chord progressions, anger, musicianship, poetry. I'm sad it took me so long.
Rip George Floyd ✊🏿
its never too late. PE No. 1
Is it just me or does listening to this make you feel epic
Nope makes me feel like a badass
This is why we listen to music we vibe with haha
forever yes
Absolutely, the song reminds me that no matter how much I've been knocked down I will bounce back because I'm harder than I think.
100 straight push ups!!!! Lol
Definitely one of the most uplifting, feel-good songs I've ever heard. Mad props
no wonder that it is originally an italian song!
horns by shirly bassey! @@donatellaborciccibelloni5328
@@donatellaborciccibelloni5328 Fuck Italy
Chuck d in flavor Flav are great. Some people might even think they're the best rap group ever. Is there a political statements and the way they talk.
Makes me wanna revolt
The greatest rap band in the history of existence. Promoting positivity, education and strength. I genuinely feel this band cut the line of racism in my family and laid a path of awareness for myself and those in my life. God bless Chuck D.
Not quite the greatest....definately underrated and bad ass
I was so incredibly LUCKY to have seen them Live! This song at 30,000+ watts hits a whole lot more!
Great comment - and I agree with you, for me PE are number one.
I think Wu tang are the greatest rap group ever created as well as outkast, so many great duos/groups you can't rank them all accordingly, just too good lol
@@agent78quest17 Gang Starr as well
This brings me back to the summer of '09, being maybe 15 years old, first time playing Skate 2 on the 360. Always brings a tear to my eye.
God. Those were great days.
Damn it was around that time I listened to this song too but it was skate 3 I'd be playing lol.
Ohhhh shit this was on Skate 2 hahahaha

I'm 31 going on 32 and I've literally only listened to progressive rock, metal and jazz for the last decade, but thanks to a fantastic local radio dj in the Tampa Bay area using this as his opening song I feel enlightened!
Me too! I was like wow this is dope as f___. And here we are.
727 for life mudafqas
Now 34 lol
One of the best lines in music, “if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything, harder than you think is a beautiful thing”
All three verses are off the chain. I love the message of the last verse.
“Harder than you think is a beautiful thing” is what gets me 💪🏻
Lakai Fully Flared, arguably one of the greatest skate videos of all time, is the source that brought me to public enemy. I am forever grateful
PE changed my life. 49yold and still remember the first time i listened a PE vinyl. Thx

"Spitting riches, bitches, and this new thing about snitches
Watch them asses move as the masses switches
System dissed them but barely missed her
My sole intention to save my brothers and sisters"
Chuck's a fucking genius.
For information,I'm a Scottish Lass from Aberdeen,Scotland and have followed#Publicenemy since 80's...Chuck D et al have taught me so freaking much over the years and #Chuckds and PE writing is spot on..I know that Chuck likes to check out culture of everywhere they play and learn about the politics. They had and still have a hardcore set of fans in Aberdeen and everywhere in Scotland. He actually said at the Glasgow gig that he thought Scotland would be independent by now!!!!!.. Yep they have so many gifts and I am so very honoured to have found them when I did. They are true genuine highly talented and genius writers and musicians. THANK YOU PUBLIC ENEMY FOR LETTING YOUR FANS BE OURSELVES..with peace and love from Aberdeen!!✌❤💕
this song gets me in a really good mood not alot of songs these days do that to me anymore

camokoy I don't Chuck D has written anything that didn't carry a strong message, long live the days of spoken word wrap.
This beat is so fire..definitely a song that will never get old..timeless!
PUBLIC ENEMY ... and still no 1 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
"You don't stand for something. You fall for anything."
THIS is one of my ENTRANCE SONGS when I hit the floor at work! P.E. NEVER DISAPPOINTS!✊🏾
The most epic moment ever happened when I was driving around in the back of a yellow cab in NY and this song comes on... Pure epicness

Brings me back to when I was 15 years old, me and my friends were up all night partying on a Friday night, wake up Saturday morning at my house and play EA skate 2 ALL DAY. What a great time in my life lol
Bruh 😭
I've been listening to rap since 79' and I've NEVER heard HORNS blaze like that b4 in Hip-Hop! (Shout-out to Hank Shocklee & The Bombsquad). As long as there is injustice in this world P.E will STAY relevant! 💯
what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when you realise the horns are shirly basseys,,, yeah,,, really,,,,,
This one is so powerful... Could listen to this song all day!
Thanks to Public Enemy for freakin' awesome tune!
when i walk to school i listen to this and walk like a boss.

Kieran Penhallow most likely looking and thinking look what drugs do...
mcod99 legend

Bars and hooks are crazy. Chuck D is the ultimate M.C.
Easily.
This is what HIp Hop is supposed to be.
I am from Paris in France always loved and follow Public Enemy still number one in my heart
2021 and I'm still moving to this. If you're here I salute you. Xxxx
This song is so good it makes me cry.
Chuck D & Public Enemy are the reason rappers now can talk about political & social issues. Respect 💯💯✊✊
This guys flow is unbelievable I love it. Why are the no more rappers like this anymore the game has dropped.😥
The guy is not a guy! He is Chuck D. Lead singer of Public Enemy! His music embodies substance!
I had to retire. :)
Chuck D and GURU gangstarr
Are the only 2 guys I know that has the voice, flow, and style
When the track and the message of the song are so good its like a shot of vitamins and nutrition straight to my soul...
in seventh grade, we watched a documentary called "let freedom sing", featuring black artists such as Chuck D and Aretha Franklin. shortly afterward, I started listening to P.E.
...in hindsight, pretty much the only time I can remember a music appreciation class spawning an actual appreciation for music.
10 yrs later still the best song ever
One of my favorite songs, Flav makes this song just right, he brings the perfect balance to Chuck D.
Yeah, the contrast between Flav and Chuck D soooo damn perfect !!
Bro I just found this song and this…my goodness it’s amazing g
This jam is so nostalgic, brings back that early 90s so much..
"So it's time to leave you a preview, so you too can review what we do..." Genius.
Protests on the streets 2020 and this song is still relevant
Just one of the best hip hop records that didn't need to glorify drugs and shootings to be quality
Remember this as the theme music for the London 2012 paralympics - epic!
Dude it totally is 🤙
Thanks Scott for introducing public enemy
To me
You don't stand for something, you fall for anything
Harder than you think, it's a beautiful thing
quoted that a lot
not many people recognize it That is a Damn Shame
End of Match movie , watch it, it`s worth it! Saw it yesterday and heard this g e n i u s track. I was flashed so hard as I heard that song for the very 1st time! How could I have missed it?!?
Any time I listen to this I remember there is someone out there with less than me and doing more with it than I am and I move my phat ass and get going. This song is for anyone who needs to hustle and get started. This song makes you feel like everything is possible, because actually. It is.
💪
We need rappers like Chuck D back, cause the game just ain't what it used to be, now it's just full of clowns.
***** You must be one of those wannabe thugs. I hope you're not talking about the same game I'm talking about. I'm not not talking about mortal combat dude, I'm talking about rap.
***** Yet as we speak n*ggas think it's cool to be a thug. 9/10 of the MCs on here rap about sex, money, drugs, and black on black genocide, that alone should tell you something is wrong with the game. Dude seriously, the only real rapper you mentioned is Kendrick Lamar, the rest are pretty much... lame or average. (Forgot about J.Cole). I take that back, just Kendrick.
jmoney2620
Problem is, people are buying it. 'The game' clearly extends to the target audience, so something is seriously wrong!
Fizzoid Me personally, I don't buy that stuff, I listen to Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, Chuck D etc.
jmoney2620 Man, I'm STILL listening to Lupe's Food and Liquor album. One of my favourites.
Love listening to this whilst out riding on my mobility scooter.
Sippin on Gin'n'juice!? Nice one!
Chuck d... Flavor Flav... And those horns... Yeah boy ✊🏾
My GOD I miss this song .
Beat a 30 crack habit it took everything I had from me. I was living on the streets living stumbling into an early grave. I managed to quit get clean and get it all back. And let me tell you it’s harder than you think baby
Quite possibly the best hip hop I've ever heard. Made me cry.
YES!!!! I agree, something about those trumpets but made me cry too...
I was a teenager when PE came out & after “Shut Em Down” I sorta strayed away from their music....this is really good I’m glad I got turned onto this....thanks Huffy 👍 my man
"IF YOU DON'T STAND FOR SOMETHING YOU FALL FOR EVERYTHING"❤
USA Redeem Team brought me here! Miss you KOBE #USA #KobeBryant #Gold
The horns are what make this song.
Those horns are nice ✊🏾
Damn! I miss Public Enemy!
I Bumped them A lot when I was stationed in Asia in 88-92.
Sometimes old school rappers try to do their thing later in life and fail miserably. This is 100% a success.
best sample ever
I think this is the best rap song of all time
This beat gives me goose bumps!!
Brings tears to ma eyes pals ! Keep it Real
RAP back in the 80’s: life in the gettos black people repressed by government fight the repression
Today’s RAP : girls twerking, money talks , guns fight bulshit
Anyway I went to Paris to a flees market and saw public enemy T-shirt on the wall behind counter and asked the shop woman how much was the T-shirt
She looked at me and said: that is not for sale ..its priceless ❤️
W
beautiful.
Gosh...end of watch. Such an amazing movie!
I remember when this album released. Still just as dope as ever.
Chuck D best rap voice Ever!
You gotta give these games credit for brining kids to great music like this.
2025 whos here with me ?
2030 my friend 😂
This is genuinely one of the most underrated hip-hop tracks ever made. It is disgustingly underrated
Still here brother!
This will be bumped for an eternity.
"So it's time to leave you a preview, so you to can review what we do" sick word play.
Skate 2 :) Love this song
I don't know why, but this song gives me so much motivation
"Fuck da Police but who's stopping YOU from killing me?"
Love that line!!
Fuck the police as a corrupt force... You may love an individual police or many of them, but their institution is fucked.
+Cam Champ better than having nothing, and it's no where near as corrupt as many other countries like Columbia.
+Cam Champ every force(💰) is corrupt, just look at the 2016 presidential nominees.
+Martin Duprey
That's what happens when the system is only there for the system itself, not for the citizens. Sad shit.
See these brothers are intelligent they are just the best they make good songs they have great meanings and I love how it's in the Black culture just like me
"Roll it backwards Ima leave it at that". Genius word play.
Greatest rap song of all time
Who bumping this still in 2019
just like dat... Harder Than Evah
super duper Forever. REAL Shit. For Real.
Im bumping it right now cooking thanksgiving dinner
I just found this. I'm only upset it took this long.
2020
2024 ~ One Vote ~
USA First, but can i be the second 😂😂😂 👍
Forever ❤
Can you dig it.... This song is great, thank you, Chuck D
This is the kind of rap I wanna hear. This shit means something. Wouldn't hear this from Drake or Tyga.
+zm15 could you give me some song titles? wouldn't mind having a listen
+zm15 I was talking more about the political message of the song, the sociological and racial issues that are rapped about. I feel like this is what rap was originally for and now it's just full of overhyped egotistical dickheads with too much money. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy Drake from time to time.
you are completely right
+Lucy Watson I like you name BTW. ;)
+Lucy Watson political activism + preaching + rap = public enemy
2020 and still rocking this bad boy. 2021 will roll by and ill still be bopping to this
Best driving song. Especially from south orange county to LA
And Luton down to Watford UK yeah boy!!!!
I am a 50 y old Latino from H Town, and I remember my homey Eric and I when we were 17 we would drive through the carwash in a Nova, drinking down some 40s blasting the hell out of subs with PE #1. Heres to my brother Eric.
This hits HARD! should be a billboard hit
MLB Spring Training 2014 commercial!!!!! Glad that the MLB has good taste in hip hop. One of their shows they have has the song Step into a World by KRS-One playing right before they get into a commercial break.
Listening to this in the aftermath of the recent shootings and Dallas from a long way away in New Zealand. Kia kaha (be strong).
Yes
Fellow kiwi :D
^^ Always good to see the Kiwi contingent around
Kia Ora Kia Kaha brothers all round the world 1 love
Ka pai
Saw public enemy at Kendal calling festivals in England blew me away x
Its been years!!! I remember skating the streets listening to this song. Keep the wheels fresh and the trucks a little less than tight my brothas.
fucking love this so much. rap will never be as good
No truer words were ever spoken.
''rap will never be as good'' That's what they all say
Clearly you're not listening to anything outside of pop mediums
So true..... modern day hip hop and rap is nothing more about wealth, complete bullshit. Public Enemy was about bringing harmony and giving meaning to a race of people who were treated as second class citizens.
Richard Jones This was made in 2007 so its Pretty good
Absolute classic by absolute legends.
Just. Like. THAT.
The weight and authority of Chuck.D. with Flav as a counterbalance is powerful Public Enemy no gangster rap crap always positive and the music WoW im white and 63 but this is the bomb Big Pun Twinz feat Fat Joe is a good track oh and Easy Es diss track of Dre God bless people!🙈🙉🙊❤❤❤
This is one of those songs you remember forever.
