I say art should bring you joy and if digital art is what brings you joy and lights that spark inside you that keeps you creating, then continue making art however works best for you. I tend to just keep a sketchbook these days for playful scribbles and idea planning, but I'm personally so much more happy and inspired creating with my iPad.

Yes! You have the right plan for growing!! Art is for the moment. Art is for being creative and being creativity every day is important. It helps you in every area of your life. I'll be screaming that from the rooftops until I die!!! Enjoy your journey. It's okay not to like what you've done before. You're not there anymore. One day, you'll look and may like it again. I'm glad I found you. I'm excited to see where your journey takes you.

A nice way to figure out what you like about compositions is to make a ton of squares or a grid in your sketchbook. Then go through your fav artists and scribble down examples of compositions they do that you really like. But keep the sketches super simple w shapes like circles or something. Like for example: I love how they put a big form here next to a tiny form in the corner etc. This way anytime you're struggling you can come back to that page in your sketchbook with successful compositions and try them out in various pieces.

i was just thinking abiut this: a lot of depth working with coloured pencils is building from a background color, so why not use colorful paper??
ive also recently been to an art exhibit from max ernst and while im not the hugest fan of his works it HAS inspired me to do/try out collages! i bet it would look super cute on a print or digital artwork to see the textures of different materials show through! like... fiber texture is so cool! why not use yarn??

Hey Megan! If it’s possible to incorporate traditional work into your digital? Like you did earlier in the video where something in your sketchbook then became something on your iPad? Check out Gem @the colour cave for coloured pencil tips, she has some brilliant ideas on using them! I started my art journey with watercolour so I’m now learning how to draw digitally and am having the same issue as you but the other way round - I find I get frustrated because I could paint something in watercolour quicker than digitally!

I loved hearing your process of realizing your prefer doing digital art and not fighting that. I feel that to my core. The expenses to create traditionally are so hugeee and the delimitation of editing traditional art is huge. But both are beautiful ~ it’s refreshing to hear you express this because I feel there is an unspoken assumption that traditional art is better when that’s not true

Pentel Oil pastels are so great and they're only $8 for a box of 50! I think you should definitely try them out and then if you love them, you can spring for a more expensive set. I'm on the computer all day for my job, so I love taking a break from it and using traditional materials. And I love your painting of Cosmo (oh no, or is it Rover...I wasn't paying enough attention)! Thanks for talking about your insecurities and second-guessing your art. I have major imposter syndrome so it’s reassuring to hear artists I respect talk about it. I also prefer digital art, traditional art is wonderful but it’s more expensive and you’ve got to have the space to work with it and store it.

Your chatting about experimenting to keep your content and merch and art new and fresh makes a lot of sense to me and resonates deeply. And it also made me think about how artists like Picasso must've felt the same way. Hence the phases of his creative expression; his blue phase, rose phase, African-inspired phase, and cubism phase. I think it's part of the creative expressive form; the desire to try all mediums but also the need to stay consistent for life's sake. Stay curious and as balanced as you can! If you falter, that's okay, we're only human

We don't think anyone should feel guilty for the mediums or subjects they haven't yet mastered. Every artist should feel free to find their own way doing what feels natural to them! That's not to say that it should always be easy, but since the artist is ruler of their own creative domain, it's essential to develop a process that brings you back again and again. Eventually, we all find ourselves wanting to try new techniques and processes, on our own terms, according to our own goals!

When u do traditional it's helpful to make what are called thumb nails to help get down your composition and colors before you do the real thing. These test drawings are typicaly only a couple inches big to get the idea of it, but u can make them any size you want. It's just ment to be quick, fast, and rough sort of planning. Also if you want to get better the best way to do that is what your already doing. Putting in those pencil miles

somethings that may help with the colored pencil frustration: used colored paper like pastel paper (the tooth of the paper helps); used colored pencil sticks to lay out large chunks of color; use colored pencils with other dry or quick-drying media like chalk pastels or markers; blend your media into each other either with a blender stump or your fingers or a colorless blender (or white colored pencil); build up your pencil layers through light layers

You made the art everyday even when you weren’t feeling what you were making and that takes dedication😅 You made some really lovely gems and the daily (or every other daily if that’s more doable cuz every day is hard) practice really teaches us what we like to do, what we loathe doing, whether we need to just draw in our comfort zone some days or give ourselves a nudge with a challenge. I’m BIG Sophie fan too. I feel like she’s RUclips’s best kept secret- I’m always recommending her channel to people and I cannot believe she doesn’t have like 5M subs. Personally, I like Faber-Castell's color pencils way better. They are so smooth and don't break easily. I think with prismas I had an issue with them sometimes being inconsistent-- so sometimes they would lay down really rough for some reason. Maybe you might enjoy faber-castell's better-- you can do a lot with the 12 pack and some markers or watercolors. 😊
