Not only your presentation of the kit and your artwork are excellent, but your videowork is fabulous. I guess you record your work from two camera angles. Fantastic all your movies are.

Thank you Miklos ♥️ I really appreciate the kind words not only regarding the art but my filming too. I have just one camera, but I do like to add some other angles filming. Sometimes it's nice to watch how the paint moves close up.
I feel like I've learned a new medium since uploading to RUclips.

These are both beautifully drawn and painted.Even the few choices of colour in there does not stop you from doing a fabulous job.I agree a blue and read would be great!you can then get the purples in the shadows .But I am sure it’s no hardship opening another paint box up.Great work ..Love n Light 🥰

Yeeees I like mixed media thing in this set en also the fact that you really can achieve very dark values. That is sometimes my struggle with watercolor sets in general. I have a few Derwent set all from scrawlbox, and other brands like Prima which I love because of the pigmentation. I never mix that sets too 🙈 not that it's forbidden. Strange.. Its like i want to force myself to stick with that particular chosen set 😅.
Ik like the roughness of the colourpencils on top of the inks in the portrait. You made the skin look so soft, but still with good depth. Very nice.
The loose approach suits the owl fantastic. Great job. And thank you for sharing your experience with this set!

I’d like to get it. I’d add some half pans in the waterbrush spot. A bluish grey, a deep earthy blue, an earth yellow, an earthy warm grey, at least. That way you can get proper colour contrast and mix colours just muted/earthy versions. The blue with re will make the earthy purples. Maybe inktense Payne’s grey, inktense iron blue and inktense mustard. Other inktense that would be very helpful for earthy options added to this set; Ionian green, dusky purple and tan.
Yes mix media and brands! Don’t needlessly segregate! Use random generators to help. Get TTRPG dice (D&D dice) and make d100 charts of art supplies roll dice to get a number between 1-100 (2; 10 sided dice) and use the random colours and supplies together. Keep notes. Keep experimenting!
    A few suggestions for everyone;
1)Try ballpoint pen and watercolour wash
2)Try watercolour and gouache together on coloured cardstock
3)Try coloured pencil sketch overlayed with watercolours the. Do final details and opacity with gouache
    4) Try a faint graphite sketch that is inked with detailed waterproof ink. Let dry to set in paper (at least 8 hours) then watercolour washes.
Try different colours of ink! Even rainbow inks; using many colours in the same artwork! This works best on smooth paper such as hot press watercolour paper.
    5) try mixed media and watercolour on the ‘wrong’ paper. Try to force it to work even in a cheap dry media sketchbook. General tip. Buy and use makeup brushes to paint (get one set for watercolour and a separate for acrylic, etc. they are amazing to paint with!
    6) take earth tones coloured pencils and make a pile of them then close your eyes mix them up and choose 3-5 at random. Use all of the random earthy pencils to make a detailed multi coloured sketch of your subject. Then do soft watercolour washes over top. When dry If needed add in some opaque gouache especially for highlights.
    7) if you lack dice write out all of a supply onto folded papers and place in a jar, mix and choose randomly! Ex; three watercolours at random, make an artwork with only those three But to upgrade to mixed media allow a pencil, erasers and choose three random coloured pencils, or inktense, etc. then use these supplies together. Consider adapting the style and subject to the colours you get rather than forcing odd colours in a pre chosen subject!
    8) choose at random 2 coloured pencils 1specialty pencil (inktense, charcoal, pastel, etc), 5 watercolours/water soluble media in a pan, and make art! Can also have optional random ink or even choose the paper type at random! Take notes for later.
    9) make a colour notes book. Also other mixed media notes. Refer back to it. And if you haven’t accurate labeled swatch cards for all your media!
    Have fun everyone!

🤣 I see what you did right there. Very intense 👀🤣🤣
That portrait came out amazing. We are our own worst critic. Right? I love that you changed the color on the lips. I agree there should have been some kind of red.
    Both illustrations came out great.
I have a hard time with portraits and highlighting the areas. When you were in the cheek bone area I was like “ see, now that’s what I’m trying to do, but can never quite get it. “ good thing I love art just gotta keep trying 🤗💕
Sad to see a local store go but glad you have been able to give those supplies a new home. See you in the next one.

Thank you Creative Phenomenon Art ♥️ hehe gotta have a little pun in there now and then lol
Yes we can be our worst critic indeed! But after drawing and painting everything we're going to notice all of those little imperfections. But they aren't a bad thing right?
Some portraits with very dramatic lighting can be a joy as the shadows and highlights map out those facial features. With a more diffused lighting it sends my brain into a spin lol lots of figuring it out with those subtle details. Lots of light layers help!
Ahhh yes it is sad that another local art shop is going. Three have closed down within the past 7 years. The first one I'd been going to since I was a teen (very long time ago 😉) then another 3 years ago. The last one in my area is going and it's really sad. Don't get me wrong there's a lot of stuff I do buy online. For all of my main supplies like paint brushes, paper canvas etc and of course Derwent paints. I got them from there. It's just really sad.

Beautiful paintings. I didn't even realize that Derwent made that set. I'm sorry to hear your favorite supply store is closing. It is always hard when you have to find a new place to enjoy especially if they don't compare.

Thank you Jamie ♥️ I'd seen the line and wash set ages ago (I didn't buy it) but not the shade and tone set. I quite like how nicely it is put together and the pencils are also a nice touch too.
Ah yes another art shop closing 😟 there are no independent ones near to me now. Within 7 years 3 have closed down. I like to be able to feel the paper and hold sketchbooks, test pens and pencils etc. You just can't do that online. We do have a couple of big shops that sell art supplies but the advice on products isn't quite there.

@@KatyRylesArt Yeah, it is a sad thing to see so many store go out of business. I agree with you on being able to check out the products and have interactions with people at the stores. There is something satisfying in buting the supplies in store.

Hi Katy I really enjoyed watching you build up the skin tones, something I've yet to get to grips with. I thought you did a great job with both pieces, love the depth you managed to get in the owl's eye. Like you, I'm a big fan of the derwent products. Amongst my collection I have the Inktense 2 set and have been eyeing up set 1, I've been trying to justify another purchase! I'll have to think 'inktense -ly' about it, sorry your jokes are starting to rub off on me! 🦉😁🤦‍♀️

I have been eyeing this set, but I have the tinted charcoal colors and some of the inktense already. Though if I get the graphitint set I could cobble together my own version. I thought both your pieces came out lovely. and I chuckled at the intense inktense comment. If I were to make my own set, I think I would add a muted violet and olive green with the cooler red, could probably make every skintone/variation with that.

When you swatched the colours, I hoped you'd go for a loose approach. Love your artworks, don't be so hard on yourself. I play "mix and match" with my crafting stash as well, no point in keeping sets seperated fron one another.

Thank you Crafting Lady ❤️ even though the first painting ended up not as loose as I intended I still enjoyed using these and were perfect for the second painting.
I do mix and match with a lot of other supplies. I wanted to see if this set alone could do the job. Ahhh just needed a couple of other colours for enhancing the skin tones.

That owl is just gorgeous!! This was a great review, and I love what you did with the supplies :) It took me a long time to manage to become looser with my portraits of humans, and the only thing that really helped was to do loads of them, and WITHOUT sketching in pencil first, just going in straight with the watercolour.
