  • The town of Blowing Rock takes its name from an unusual rock formation which juts over 1,500 feet above the Johns River gorge. Due to the rock's shape and size, wind currents from the gorge often blow vertically, causing light objects to float upwards into the sky.
    Another tourist attraction in Blowing Rock is the Tweetsie Railroad theme park, which is home to the only operational narrow-gauge railroad in North Carolina. Tweetsie Railroad operates a variety of narrow-gauge railroad equipment, including East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad Locomotive No. 12, a steam locomotive built for the original ET&WNC Railroad in 1915. Visitors to Tweetsie can ride the train for 3 miles (5 km) and enjoy the mountain scenery; the park also contains traditional amusement-park rides and attractions. Other attractions in the Blowing Rock area include the elegant and historic Green Park Inn, Mystery Hill where visitors can experience a natural gravitational anomaly that causes objects suspended in mid air to take more force to move one direction than the other - Mystery Hill is also home to the Moon and Irene Mullins Arrowhead Collection with over 52,000 arrowheads on display, the Blowing Rock Country Club, and the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum.
    On the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway is Moses Cone Memorial Park, which offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains. The park contains the Moses Cone Manor and Estate, and features two large lakes surrounded by forests and trails. These trails wind for miles, and were once carriage trails for the Cone family. Adjacent to the park is the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve, where visitors can board their horses convenient to the trails; there are 25 miles (40 km) of riding and carriage trails in the park.
    Annual festivals and events in Blowing Rock include the "Art in the Park" festival, a monthly summertime (May-Oct) event in downtown Blowing Rock where artists set up booths to sell their work to tourists; the Fourth of July festival and parade; Blowing Rock Winterfest in November; the Blue Ridge Wine and Food Festival in April; Christmas in the Park and Lighting of the Town festivities, including a Holiday Parade; the Symphony by the Lake at Chetola Resort; and the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show which has been a tradition for 84 years. It is the longest continuously run horse show in the United States. The show features some of the best horse riders in the Eastern United States.

    I love this drive. My wife and I visited Blowing Rock and Boone, among many other places, every fall for 31 years so this video holds a special place in my heart. Thank you.

    My great-grandfather had a part in building the building where the coffee shop is, along with a lot of other buildings in BR. He was a builder/stone mason in the early 1900's. His home is now the Ridgeway Inn. The Mellow Mushroom used to be a gas station. Thanks for sharing. I miss Blowing Rock.

    Blowing Rock is interesting to visit. It reminds me a little bit of Highlands NC. I am not into shopping but my fiance' and her cousin love to go shopping in Blowing Rock. She grew up in North Wilkesboro and graduated from App State. So, she is familiar with the whole area. Your video on West Jefferson was interesting. Her sister and Brother in Law, who live in Charlotte, have a permanent summer campsite at Racoon Holler near West Jefferson. I love the area. I wouldn't mind living in North Wilkesboro, Boone or West Jefferson. I grew up in Morgantown WV and they are closer to the type of towns I love. But, at least for the short-term I am stuck in the crazy traffic of Atlanta.

      Thank you for sharing. I love the West Jefferson area; it is so high at this point. I am looking for house and finding home prices have skyrocket. Hope things get back to normal soon.

      @@amyxplores810 I know houses have gone up so much. I watched your Saluda and Teton videos. I was shocked by the average price of a home in both those towns. Of course, here in Atlanta it has gone through the roof. Good luck on finding a home in a place you want to be.

    A favorite of my Mother's and mine. Dont forget to mention that the author, Jan Karon, lived there for a time and based her books on the Mitford series on Blowing Rock. Love it!

    Hello, thank you for the great tour of the charming town. Blowing Rock was recommended to me by a couple I met in Vero Beach FL. They love it and now I can see why.

    Saw your video for the first time today. I am delighted at the details you give while driving along especially naming B&B , and inns. One day I would like to visit and you give details like no other. I didn't know how close some famous sites were and I am encouraged and excited to travel soon. I am 73 and it's time to go. Thank you very much. Audrey from N. C.

    Hi there! I'm looking for a place with crisp cold fresh mountain air that's not too far of a flight from Jacksonville, and Blowing Rock came to mind. Would you say the air up there is more muggy and oppressive, or crisp and fresh? (I have medical issues and do so much better in cool crisp fresh air)

    • @amyxplores810
      @amyxplores810  7 месяцев назад +1

      It's not going to be muggy right now, here is the current weather for today. Windy with occasional snow showers. High near 30F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 50%. Snow accumulations less than one inch. Higher wind gusts possible.
