    This was a wonderful walk for me. I loved going back to Wilmington and stirring up such wonderful memories from growing up there. Though, as Thomas Wolfe said, "You can never go home". I found my memories were not as accurate as I thought but the emotional impact of returning and seeing these buildings, streets, rivers, and churches was kind of wonderful though nostalgic. We start on the oak lined streets of the old part of down town, loop down by the river front and make our way through the historic old homes to the south including the Bellamy Mansion before returning whence we came. This part of the city is truly beautiful and I loved walking around here again. And I love sharing these personal bits with you on our virtual walks for treadmill. Thanks for your patience in my remembrances of things past. I hope you enjoy the walk almost as much as I did. -Henry

    My Story: I'm a filmmaker by trade. In 2016, we sold our house to go traveling for the year in Europe. Since I couldn't work there, I decided to start another RUclips Channel. I love walking as a way to explore and this was an easy thing to share. It got popular and I've continued. My goal is to share these treadmill travel videos to help your work out with virtual walks.

    Wikipedia;
    Wilmington is a port city and the county seat of New Hanover County in coastal southeastern North Carolina, United States.
    With a population of 115,451 at the time of the 2020 United States Census, it is the ninth most populous city in the state. Wilmington is the principal city of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area, a metropolitan area that includes New Hanover and Pender counties in southeastern North Carolina,] which has a population of 263,429 as of the 2012 Census Estimate. The city was founded in the 1730s, and after going through a couple of different names (New Carthage, New London, Newton), its name became Wilmington in 1740. It was named after Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington. Its historic downtown has a 1.75-mile (2.82 km) Riverwalk, developed as a tourist attraction in the late 20th century. In 2014, Wilmington's riverfront was ranked as the "Best American Riverfront" by readers of USA Today. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Wilmington as one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. City residents live between the river and the ocean, with four nearby beach communities just outside Wilmington: Fort Fisher, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, all within half-hour drives from downtown Wilmington.
    Towards the end of the 19th century, Wilmington was a majority-black, racially integrated prosperous city, and the largest city in North Carolina. In the Wilmington massacre of 1898, white supremacists launched a coup that overthrew the legitimately elected local Fusionist government. They expelled opposition black and white leaders from the city, destroyed the property and businesses of black citizens built up since the Civil War, including the only black newspaper in the city, and killed an estimated 60 to more than 300 people. This coincided with broader efforts of disenfranchisement at the state level. Whereas North Carolina had 125,000 registered black voters in 1896, it had 6,000 by 1902. By 1910, Charlotte overtook Wilmington as the state's largest city.

    I appreciate you not trying to gloss over or sugarcoat the unpleasant historical references that others may prefer not to segue to. It's a reminder that no place is perfect and that our history helps shapes all of us as people. Thank you for doing that.

      You are most welcome and I'm so glad you appreciate that. It's a bit of balancing act. I really don't want to make the channel political but I feel a responsibility to do a bit of good with it if possible. I also try to remember that History is where we come from, not necessarily where we are headed. All the best ! --H

    Wilmington is my home. Born here and my kids are 9th generation residents. It has changed SO much and it’s always a treat to ask my 95 year old grandma about her youth in Wilmington where most of the places she went to don’t exist anymore.

    Hi Henry, enjoyed this walk in Wilmington and hearing all about your memories of growing up there. It was interesting and helped to bring the place alive. It's true how we remember things differently when we're a child and how our perspective changes as we get older.

    Wilmington looks like a nice place to have grown up. I’d prefer smaller cities and the fact that it’s located along the river really adds to the appeal. Crazy story about the coup d’état, funny how it’s just covered up.
    I’d love to do a river boat tour or a ghost tour for fun. NC isn’t too far of a drive from Nova Scotia. I’ll add it to the someday when COVID is gone list 😞 . Thanks for the tour👍🏻

      The coup is getting more press the last couple years and they renamed a park where I played baseball as a kid because it was named for a pretty horrible racist. Even his descendants said it was a good move. Glad you enjoyed this. Can't wait for COVID to get sorted for more travel too. -H
