I will give Mercedes this. The one big thing that the E63S has over the new M5 is just the pure fact that it can be had in a wagon. Which is just glorious if you ask me.

@The Truth Well, ignoring BMW racing history does not validate your claim. They are both good, but BMW only made the wagon one year in M specification. It would be interesting to see how this does against an Alpina B5 Touring.

Quick tip for 5:39: hold down the downshift paddle for a second and it will automatically downshift to the right gear where you have the most available power.
Underrated comment since matt didnt mention it and I'm sure not many people know that and the importance of that.

The lovely driver letting you pass at 7:35 is why we need two beep modes in all our cars: the courtesy beep (double blip) and the fuck you beep (standard).

It's not often that I'm blown away by the interiors in modern cars, but this, and the LC500 are recent favorites.
It's funny you should mention that. I had seen a few LC500s driving around and didn't think anything of it (I really don't like it, every time I looking it I I can't help but think about how much better the LFA looks). But the other day I went to a car show and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the interior. Lexus knocked it out of the park, in fact it even makes the LFA's interior look cheap.
Only problem with this interior is that piano black starts looking really bad really fast.

Yeah. And the only reason this Mercedes is the most powerful production wagon is because Cadillac didn't make a wagon version of the current generation of CTS-V (640 HP/630 tq). But you can always buy a previous gun CTS-V wagon and mod it a bit. Real easy to get to 700 HP with basic mods AND you can get it with a manual.

@@vernonprice5986 Forget about this "600 hp" . In German car tests the AMG E63S Wagon had more than 650 hp on the dyno. The same with the current BMW M5, which has measured 670 hp on the dyno, despite its official "600" PS. German high performance cars are always completely underrated... Just look at Porsche and the performance of their cars, which has nothing to do with "only" 550 hp in the Panamera Turbo.

rs6 is not even half of this car. i wouldnt put the rs6 next to the e63 estate because of the ride comfort first of all. then prolly i'm biassed in here because i drove an rs6 right after i got off an s8 and for some reason the s8 had better torque low down than the rs6 and that's weird considering they have the same engine and the s8 has less hp and torque. then is the interior design and the drive feel. the rs6 feels big, not as big as the m5 but way bigger than the e63. the e63 even tho is big .. feels small and pointy.
i haven't driven the skyline since leaving the bay area 25 years ago, but i can tell the roads have improved. thanks for taking me back.

Truth. To be fair, I've seen glossy wood veneer interiors that were let go and lordy, does it show. I dig the matte finish wood grain finishes on some higher end luxury brand offerings over the past several years.

These fast German Wagons are incredible all round pieces of equipment. In Europe we also benefit from the RS6 Estate (that's English for Wagon:-)) But, there's always a "but" right? You lose something. Feel, driver involvement.
They are so powerful, so fast that they are now supercar fast. So much so that supercars are now producing space shuttle levels of power which can't be used. Look at the 812 Superfast as an example.
If you want one car that does everything then you're going find it difficult to argue against an E63 Wagon (or RS6 if you're in the rest of the world). Trust me though, you drive one for a while and you start to feel that something is missing, some sort of driver interaction, the feeling that you are actually part of the car and making it go the way it goes. The comfortable cosseted surroundings that disguise the speed and astonishing progress these cars make that make them the perfect continent munchers numb the enjoyment and involvement of driving.
At that point you hanker for something more analogue.
So lets say you can afford 120K+ for a car, that means you can probably afford a couple of cars. At 120K would you take an E63s over say a 575 Maranello and a runabout daily driver?
I tip my hat wholeheartedly to the technology that has made these cars a reality, but as they've evolved a little bit of envolvement and love and enjoyment of driving died with the evolution.
What do I know? I own a 2017 4.0 V8 twin turbo German wagon, it is the best all round car I have ever owned or driven, by a country mile, but on a sunny Sunday morning when I want to drive for the sheer pleasure of driving, I open the garage and pull out something altogether older and more analogue.

Okay this is because I come from Canada so this is technically the only super wagon we got. But I'd gladly take this over an M5. Now if we're talking sedan versions I'd take the M5 every time. But saying that I freaking love this car though just the way it looks and how super unnecessary it is to have a wagon that has this much performance

Skyline is SO fun & beautiful, but my buddy actually spun his E36 M3 into the guard rail near Alice's. I'd feel a lot more confident driving a well-planted AWD beast like this up there.
I wonder how many accidents nowadays are caused by people looking at the screens in their cars and fiddling their way through it all.
A knob or a button, you can press/turn without looking - not so with a screen.

Great review. Great car. People always talk about the high depreciation of Mercedes Benz especially the AMG cars and the high ownership costs but it is a $120k twin turbo charged high performance car. What else would you expect? I believe if you can afford to properly maintain these cars you will enjoy them for many years.
Think this is the first review of this car I’ve seen where the comments haven’t been full of RS6 and M5 fanboys.
Seen Through Haggis I’m a huge BMW fan cause of cars like the E46 and E60 but all the new cars are trash compared to Mercedes and Porsche. E63 > M5 any day.
Love the review..... great job. We have 2018 E400 wagon with a ECU tune. Its my wife’s car and she loves it. I love driving the car its solid yet comfortable.
Surprised that he did not specify if it was an actual mechanical IWC or a quartz implementation for the MB.

Now I'm only about 2 minutes into the video right now, so I'll edit my comment along the way, but I noticed you got a close-up of the seat controls on the driver's side... If you look carefully, while the passenger's side has only the normal controls, plus buttons for the heated and cooled seats, the driver's side has a third button with the picture of a seat labelled "R." If you push that button, then it makes the driver's side seat controls take over the controls of the passenger side! Even if you hit "R" then turn on the heated or cooled seats, it'll do that to the passenger side instead. However, if a passenger is sitting there, their controls will cancel out the driver's controls. I've tested it out with my aunt in her 2017 E300, and it was pretty neat. She and I were laughing the whole time, but it's great for when my grandma gets in the passenger seat and can't figure out the controls -- my aunt then just takes over and adjusts it without reaching over.
Edit 1: 5:50 So, I'm not the only one who hates having all these gears? I honestly feel that for an automatic, 5 speeds is perfect, 6 speeds is pushing it. My mom has a 2016 W205 C300, and in manual mode, having 7 speeds is pretty obnoxious... Having to triple-click the left "paddle" to go from 7th to 6th to 5th to 4th just to take off nicely is a little bit too much...
Edit 2: How are the Pilot Sport 4S tires? I run Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires on my 2002 CLK430, but I'm looking for something with a tad bit more grip and perhaps a bit quieter...

This 60-miles-ride in this landscape may be even better than me doing the 160-miles-ride on Autobahn. Engine sounds good when it uses 1/3 of its power only. Like one of the old US V8s.

You do know that if you hold the down shift paddle for a second it will take you to the best gear to do a pull so you don't have to downshift 5 gears

I'm a valet, and I have driven a few of the newer AMG models, and they're absolutely incredible. My viewpoint is sadly from the speed of 0-30 but the build quality on the AMGs is absolutely superb. I'm not a car journalist but I've driven thousands of cars in the past year and a half and the greatest new cars are Mercedes and Porsche. Other people build nice cars but not how nice Mercedes does. They are an amazing car company. The only company that rivals Mercedes quality is Lexus and the new Genesis.

Great one take, one of the most well rounded cars ever. Want 90-95% of this experience for a fraction of the price? B6/B7 Audi S4 Avant.....Wagon with throaty V8, AWD, Recaro seats, good brakes.....all for under $20k.
Don’t believe the hype about unreliability. I have over 60k driving miles on two V8 S4’s and both were very reliable....knock on wood. Just need to keep up with regular maintenance. Mine weren’t low mileage cars either.
I agree, the B7's are criminally underrated solid cars. The transmission refinements alone would make me want a B7 over the B6 if it were an automatic. However, if it were a manual then the 150lb weight savings in the B6 would be pretty hard to resist. RS4 Timing Chain guides and tensioners are a MUST as the S4's Plastic guides are where the 4.2L Audi V8 gets it's bad reputation from reliability wise. Once you replace those guides with the metal RS4 guides though, those engines become tanks that can't be killed.
@@ftffighter I’ve had a 05 B6 Avant and a 08 b7 sedan. I prefer the b7 as it was more refined overall. I could definitely feel a difference. ‘08 also has RS4 style wheels and a much better sounding and looking stock quad pipe exhaust.❤️
I don’t recall ever seeing that the b6 is lighter. I don’t see how. It’s basically the same car mechanically, with just some different body panels. As for the manual, you definitely want the B7. They changed from the T-2 50/50 bias differential in the b6 to T-3 40/:60 for the b7.
This car can do everything, there's no need to own more than one car if you're have one of these.

A difficult car to argue against unless its initial price is beyond reach. Would have been interesting to know if it had a cover for the luggage compartment or a spare.
