Tamamushi-numa [Yamagata's oldest reservoir where the anecdote of Princess Tamamushi remains]

Tamamushi-numa, located in Yamabe Town, Higashimurayama District, Yamagata Prefecture, is the oldest reservoir in Yamagata Prefecture, built during the Oei era (1394-1427). It is said that Takeda Nobuyasu, who ruled this area in the late Muromachi period, built it for villagers suffering from water shortages.
A beautiful legend has been passed down in Tamamushi-numa. Once upon a time, there was a beautiful and hard-working girl named Tamamushi who worked as a servant at a castle in Yamanobe. One night, Tamamushi throws herself into the swamp. Since then, rumors have spread that the figure of Princess Tamamushi can be seen at the bottom of the water on nights when the moon shines blue, and this swamp is said to have come to be called Tamamushi-numa.
It is still used for agricultural water, and was selected as one of the ``100 best reservoirs in Japan'' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 2010. A 300-year-old red pine called "Kasamatsu" is planted on the cape and has become the symbol of the swamp.
