WHIRLEY POP STOVETOP POPCORN POPPER | RICHARD IN THE KITCHEN

  • In this video I show you how use the Whirley Pop Popcorn Popper by Wabash Valley Farms. It's the spirit of the old fashioned way of popping corn in a cast iron skillet on the stove top. Many popcorn poppers these days, including microwave popcorn, leave behind un-popped or under cooked kernels. This popper is easy to use and creates that "movie theater popcorn experience". Simple to clean and easy storage.
    Shopping List:
    Whirley Pop Popcorn Popper by Wasbash (Available at some local stores and/or online)
    1-2 tbsp. high temp oil like yellow pure coconut popping oil, Canola or vegetable. (the yellow coconut is the preferred type for authentic movie theater popcorn, usually only available online)
    1/2 cup yellow popcorn kernels
    Butter, melted
    Generous sprinkle of Flavacol popcorn flavoring salt (Available at local restaurant supply and./or online)
    Popcorn Tips:
    Make sure your popper has well ventilation for steam to escape. Excess steam makes your popcorn chewy and tough. Making sure to empty the popcorn into an open bowl immediately after popping helps to prevent prevent the popcorn being exposed to excess steam.
    Prevent over-popping and burning by counting to two as the popping slows. If you don't hear a pop in two seconds it's ready to be removed from the heat.
    Another way to prevent your popcorn from becoming soggy and tough is don't use to much oil. A 3:1 ration is preferred. (as an example, if you use 1/3 cup of kernels, use 1 1/2 tbsp of oil.
    Directions:
    First time use: wash and season the pot per the instruction manual.
    Place the Whirley Pop on the stove burner with the heat off.
    Add the popcorn and oil through one of the two hinge lids. Close the lid.
    CAUTION: DO NOT USE BUTTER TO POP THE POPCORN. IT WILL SMOKE AND BURN!!!!!
    Turn the heat to medium to medium high, depending on your stove.
    Immediately start cranking the handle while holding onto the other stability handle. Crank speed is not important as long as you are steadily cranking.
    Complete popping is usually achieved in less than 3 minutes. When you hear pops 2-3 seconds apart and feel handle resistance stop cranking and remove from the heat.
    Open the lids to allow steam to escape and let stand for a couple of minutes before eating to prevent sogginess and to assure crunch.
    Sprinkle with the Flavacol salt or regular salt and shake to thoroughly coat and drizzle with melted butter, if desired.
    Pour into serving bowls and enjoy.

    The Flavacol can be add to the melty oil before the kernels go in... this gives the popcorn better COLOR out of the gate.

      Great easy to follow video! Just found one brand new in box in my alley, and I loooooove popcorn 🍿! I've got an air popper from the 80's, and I've done oil in a pot method but all that skaking scratches the cook top. I can't WAIT to try my new (FREE!) Whirlypop! Also try adding parmesan cheese and paprika with the butter!

    I found one of these new in box at a thrift store for like $4...a solid investment. Super easy to use, simple design, durable, and it works. Can't say that about too many products these days.

    Hi Richard! The only time where you want to clean your kettle, is right after you have made caramel corn, cheese popcorn or kettle corn. I should know, as I've had a whirleypop for over 7 years and love it!

      I don’t clean it per se. I simply wipe out any heavy buildup of oil and residual popcorn salt. Oh and loose kernels. Thanks so much.

    Hi Richard! 👋 Nice video on the Whirley popper. I've always popped my kernels in a stainless bowl on the cook top. I always have unpopped kernels. I think I might have to get one of these Whirley poppers for the consistency. I prefer to have basic popcorn with avocado oil and salt grinded fine in a mortar and pestal. Just three simple ingredients without any additives or coloring agents. 👍

    You use Flavacol while the raw corn is in the hot oil. I add Splenda with the Flavacol and make great sweet and salty popcorn.

      That would seem like it'd make for a better distribution of the salt. I've been adding it after it's done popping by trying to sprinkle it evenly through the half open lid as I turn the crank to distribute it. It generally works okay, but letting it scatter around from the popping action seems like it'd work better to get it all evenly distributed.

      I do both. I dust the kernels before popping then sprinkle in layers while adding the popcorn to the bowl.

    is the little bit of oil you add in the beginning the same as the melted butter you add at the end? nice video btw!

      Just depends on how much butter you like on it. I tend to like lots! Prolly about 3 tbsp. What I do is gradually add 1/4 of the popcorn from the Whirley Pop into a large bowl then drizzle some of the melted butter on that layer then so on and so on. Thanks for watching.

    the video looks very great. to stir continously, u need to have a balance by holding one hand on the vessel and use other hand to stir. Right!!, because i could see that the whole vessel is shaking. Once it is heated enough, can u hold the vessel and stir.. any Thoughts!! (Not offensive. Just Curiosity)

      Yes. The pot moves, but still sturdy. The handle keeps it grounded while you crank. The wooden handle does not get hot. Thanks for watching.

    I bought my Whirely Pop at a thrift store a few years ago. It looked brand new. I have never bought microwave popcorn since. It is very rare to have more than a couple unpopped porcorn kernals.

    00:24 - $19.99, damn good old days.. $42 nowadays (on Amazon).
    Even worse in other countries where this is not available. For example in my country (Poland) it is $69 (315 PLN), but I bought it anyways to test it out. I can always return it. I hope I'm gonna keep it tho!

      I have always loved microwave popcorn, but haven't been able to eat it in about 15 years dues to a colon issue. For some reason it always ripped me a new one with bad bloating etc. Recently I was surfing around and started finding many sites about how store-bought microwave popcorn is so unhealthy due to the many additives in it, even the bag itself. Accordingly, they conclude it can cause diseases of the lung and thyroid and even some forms of cancer. So that got me to wondering especially since in 1999 I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Perhaps it was that type of popcorn that also was causing my stomach issues. So I started looking into other ways to make it such as air popping, skillet or homemade microwave kind. I made a video a couple of weeks ago of how to make natural and healthier microwave popcorn. I've had it just about every night since and so far no stomach issues. Then I found the Whirley Pop stovetop popper, which I had last night. And again, no stomach issues. All that to say I will never eat another bag of store-bought microwave popcorn.

    I start with oil until a couple of test kernels start popping, then through in a tbls of butter and the rest of the kernels. No smoking or burning, just some of the best buttered flavoured popcorn you've ever had

    Richard, you can use ghee (clarified butter) instead of oil. It will not burn if you use medium to medium high heat. I use the Ancient Organics brand ghee. Disclaimer: I have not affiliation with the Ancient Organics company.

    If perchance the nylon gears get degraded by the heat or use over time, is it possible to retrofit them with the presumably more durable steel gears available on some models?
    I see there are hex set screws holding them on, are the metal ones the same?
    Are there any advantages to having the nylon gears vs metal?

      I've had my Whirley Pop Original, which comes with nylon gears, for years now and the gears are showing no wear with almost daily use. However, they do make a model with metal gears. Should the nylon gears wear out, there are replacement lids that are interchangeable with either 6 quart pot, which are roughly $11-12 so buying a whole new pot is not necessary.

      @@RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN that's good, I wasn't sure if the nylon gears would hold up that long from some reports that they failed. Maybe those were due to forcing the crank after the popcorn was popped and hanging up the stirrers, while they were heated up.
      Sounds like they're fine with proper handling then.

      Perhaps. IDK. I've seen some videos where people are cranking it so hard and fast. That's not necessary. A slow turning is all that's needed just to keep the kernels moving so they don't burn. But, yes, if you try to force-turn after all kernels have popped, it will cause stress on the gears.

      The manufacturer told me the metal gears are pressed in rather than held in by set screws like the nylon gears are, so there's no way to retrofit to metal. Shouldn't matter if cranking force is limited to reasonable levels, so it ought to be fine. I also make sure it isn't overheated, so it won't melt it down.

    Actually, it's is best (an recommended) that you heat your oil at medium temp with 2 or 3 kernels. When these kernels pop, add the rest of the kernels (this really helps to keep the popcorn from getting sogged).

    Yes. if you want movie theater taste use coconut oil (unrefined) and flavacol salt. I also add my flavacol into the coconut oil. And for anybody that likes melted butter topping, make sure to clarify the butter first. This is the way to make popcorn as opposed to that microwave crap and that styrofoam texture air popper popcorn.

    I have one of those theater popcorn poppers and my whirly pop does a far better job. I’m using GFS butter flavored oil to 1/2 oil to 1/2 cup kernels. It tastes like the theater but probably isn’t the healthiest option. It use medium heat and like he said, few to no popped kernels every time.

      Sure! There are several options. You can do it without oil on the stovetop or put the kernels into a brown paper sack for the microwave or get an air popper, which are cheap. I'm sure you can also doit with the Whirley Popper too. Thanks so much for watching.

    I use butter all the time in mine and has never burned. I chalk that up to pure slop. The popcorn with the butter turns out great.
    I have tried oil and the popcorn comes out tasting terrible for me. It is very bland and nasty.
    Now, I know this is operator error on both spectrums for me. You can't have everyone successfully popping popcorn in oil and not me. And you can't have me turning out good tasting popcorn cooked in butter and not anyone else.
    So, I am going to try the Franklin coconut oil for the whirley pop popcorn maker until I get it right.

      Good to know. I've heard from several where they burned it. Have you tried the type of oil used by theatres and sports arenas? I use Snappy's and it doesn't leave an aftertaste and it turns all the popcorn yellow. I get it from Amazon. I melt the butter then pour it over the popcorn in sections as I'm adding it to the bowl.       You did a great job in your video for sure.
      As for cooking with butter, it is turning brown for sure. But, it is still tasting very good to me. We grew up eating parched corn and popcorn in a cast iron skillet cooked in butter. So, we might not know any different. When I compare the popcorn cooked in butter to normal theater popcorn, mine tastes pretty good. Plus, my son likes it cooked in the butter too.

      I haven't tried Franklin's. I've seen it, but I'm just sticking with what I've used for a long time. As far as the butter thing, butter will burn at temps above 350 degrees, which is considered a moderate temperature, but different stoves vary so sometimes it's hard to pinpoint what temp it is other than guess work and trial and error. Brown is okay, but care must be taken as it gets darker from there. Alot of science involved, but basically it's the milk solids breaking down form the heat. I pop at number 8 on my stove, which is considered medium high, too hot for butter. For me, I just find that butter taste better melted at a medium low heat then pouring over the PC. I melt mine in the wave for 10 seconds then pour over the popcorn. But it's what ever works for everybody. Thanks again so much for watching.

      @@RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN used the exact same ingredients you have been using and finally a success story. That oil you recommended is way better than the other oils I have tried. Plus, the seasoning tastes better than regular salt.

    Don’t add flavacol after. Add with oil. He does it a terrible way:) and be careful a quarter teaspoon goes a long way. Can easily make it too salty.
    And I came to look at the lid and how full of water it was. Looks like it still makes the top ones soggy.

    You are far better to buy a Whirley Pop popper with metal gears than plastic gears (this popper in the video has plastic gears). Plastic gears don't have anywhere near durability after repeated use.

    Suggestion: trim the video at the start of popping and show instead the end where the popping finishes, so viewers know what to expect to hear when the last kernel gets popped.
    Just made the first batch with mine, and it was impressively successful, unburnt yet no unpopped old maids.
    Kinda the opposite of recent attempts with a microwave popper.

    We take waffles seriously in our house ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUfphIgghPSpAXNq6OG2WRYsFVqylcqMn and worked our old one through many years of Sunday brunches till it finally gave out on us. Our old one only made two at a time, this one makes four! Nicely sized 1 inch thick which are lovely! Now the kids don't have to wait as long to eat our weekly waffle breakfast and everyone's are hot if we wait and eat all together! Setting 3 seems to work perfect for golden brown. Be sure to pour the batter in the center of each waffle square, not the center of the iron like the novice that posted the scorched waffles photo. About a 1/4 to 1/3 cup of batter in each seemed to work well for us. We tested making just one at a time so we could use all the remaining batter and it made it just as fluffy and golden as when we made 4!
