  • Full Version... With Intros and Teaching of Chorus.
It is our tradition at St. Patrick's Day Celtic Sojourn Concerts to ask the audience to sing the chorus of this great song with us. Because of the pandemic, that tradition was under threat this year as we were going virtual. But when I put it to our intrepid team those who put together the audio and video of projects like this, they said, hey, why not.
We asked for audience submissions and then pure magic was worked around it. More than 60 submissions in all made the chorus sound as big and boisterous as it ever could be! Honestly, when I saw this come together first, it nearly made me cry with joy.
Thanks to all who submitted and helped us rescue one of our beloved traditions. Take a close look at this, see anyone you recognize? I see Tommy Makem's son Rory joining us and brilliantly singing along. Given this is in part, a tribute to the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, how special is that. (Rory is the sixth singer from the left on the top row in the first chorus!)
Interestingly, the picture of all of us on stage together at The Cabot Theatre in Beverly is actually a composite. From left to right its Hanneke Cassel on Fiddle and Vocals, Keith Murphy on Guitar and Vocals, Yann Falquet (seated) on Guitar, Joey Abarta on Whistle, Nathan Gourley and Laura Feddersen on Fiddles, myself on Vocals and Maura Shawn Scanlin on Vocals.
Because of Covid restrictions, we could NOT be on stage simultaneously. So, this grouping included me and Keith with a lot of distance between us. Hanneke and Yann who were in a previously established "pod" together, Joey/Nathan/Laura similarly, and Maura Shawn Scanlon separately. Hard to imagine and hard to explain as I try to write it, but Maura Shawn was NOT next to me in fact! The wonders of technology and the genius - and tenacity - of Diginovations our video partners.

Interesting, the tune is slightly different to the one I used to sing in the 60s folk clubs in Glasgow. Sounds like a harmony of the tune I know, but I can’t trust my poor hearing now.
