This is the all-new Kia Niro!
Mat’s got his hands on this family-friendly SUV to see if it has what it takes to grab your attention in an increasingly busy SUV market.
So let’s start with a look at the design. It’s notably different to the old model, with a whole new light design round at the back through to some chrome trim & bigger headlights at the front. You’ll also have the choice of optional side panels and blacked-out windows with higher-spec models!
On the inside, the improvements compared to the old model continue. The dash has a cool swooping effect coupled with a large infotainment screen, and the centre console comes with a number of physical buttons. You’ll also find soft-touch, high-quality materials throughout.
You can get the new Niro as either a hybrid or electric. The standard hybrid comes equipped with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine coupled with an electric motor to produce 139hp. You can also buy the Niro as a plug-in hybrid, which has the same set-up but a bigger battery and motor. So not only can it run on electric power alone for around 40 miles, but it can also put down 180hp.
Then there's an all-electric version. This is equipped with a single electric motor which is good for 201hp. The price starts from £28,000 for a hybrid, with the EV starting at £35,000!
So it all looks pretty impressive, but is the Niro really worth that £28,000 starting price? Stick with Mat to see for yourself!

2. The reason why LKA did not active (12:16) -> was driving under approximately 30mph (According to the manual, it must be over 60kph(37mph) to be active)
You win.
And didn't he manually turn the feature off before driving? 😆
Someone who reviews cars professionally should really read the manual beforehand, like come on..
In every hybrid/electric video Mat always says “in some cars, the brakes can be a bit grabby, but not in this car” Every single one!
I think he is always talking about the prius xd
One thing Kia has going for them is that they actually have decent names for most of their cars, not serial numbers.

The headrest have 4 different depth settings. You just pull it towards your head and once its has reached the most forward position the next pull will reset it back to furthest position.
You beat me to it.👍
@@ricco123tube yep. 👍
It's still very far out though. I noticed that in my EV6 as well. You can only adjust it in the wrong direction for me sadly.
@@dasunikat1534 seems very uncomfortable..why Kia. why?
@@talkandplay I guess Kia would come back with something like "Head rest is actually an abbreviation for Head Restraint, not Rest." Which is correct, they were originally introduced as a safety feature to prevent whiplash in a 'shunt' accident. Truth is of course we always use them as head 'rests', which is what we want, a comfort feature. Other manufacturers manage to make theirs comfy though and still do what they're supposed to do with regard to safety. So why not Kia? Style over function maybe?
6:45 You should be able to hold the auto steer button for 2 seconds and the lane assist will deactivate itself. At least that's how it works on my EV6 with basically identical software systems.
Might be good.
Hows your ev6 would you recommend it to anyone interested?
@@tadejtrobec2715 Definitely. Of course like any car it has some (minor) drawbacks. But generally speaking it is a great car and decent value. I recommend watching the typical reviews. Most seem to present the relevant points fairly.
@@tadejtrobec2715 I was one of the first to get mine last October. I'm so impressed and happy with it. I can highly recommend it.
I had a Mercedes E250 AMG before and love the Kia EV6.
Beautifully quiet and refined, loads of room, lots of standard tech, fast charging, handles well, a 7 warranty and £10k less than a Model Y, what's not to like. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.
theres also a short cut to the driver assistance menu on the steering wheel
To turn off lane departure warning you just have to press the button for the lane keeping assistant for a few seconds ;)
This works for all new KIA's btw. a simple long-press on the steering wheel will turn it off :)

@@RichardStefanits Not sure if you've been sarcastic, but they are 10 times better looking than the BMW IX - the ugliest SUV ever :)
I think what will really help them is that they are also selling in most major markets. (Such as Canada, and the US.) I have been really surprised at the lack of electric vehicles in Canada for example. We don't even get the Honda E! :( Canada has traditionally gets the interesting cars that the US doesn't. We had the Smart cars day one but the US didn't see it until like 2010 or something! We even had the Nissan Micra which the US never got! Strange... Hey Mat, how about evaluating cars self driving capabilities as standard ? it is becoming a must have gadget especially in cities and driving in traffic jams automatically is a great feature, which Honda-e handles surprisingly well (stops and starts back on it’s own as well )
i dont know about other kai drivers but i hardly use mine its not just a one click.
it was a novelty in the first few weeks but since that i have stopped using it
Thanks Matt, was waiting for a review from you on this car.
Got my Ioniq 5 on NHS lease atm. When that ends in 2 years depending on prices and what’s out I’ll be defo looking at this as an option!
My near Kia dealer had one of those and i test drove it. It wasn't the electric version but the hybrid one, decent car, better than the older Niro models.
Hi Mat
1.Turn off the LKA -> Push lka button on the steering wheel for several seconds
2. LKA not working condition -> about 45kph under drive (In manual, you should drive 60kph more and if you fullfill this condition, it is active )
I bought one via carwow two month ago. Looking forward. Thx for the review
Really liking what Kia is coming up with these days. Very impressive.
Yep. In such a good way.

This thing looks really competitive, I'm just hoping Kia lowers the price to keep it from competing too much with the EV6. In the States the previous Niro was as expensive as a mid-trim EV6 which is a better EV, but hopefully they'll adjust the pricing.
Looked impressive but tad underpowered.
@@purwantiallan5089 agreed, the first e-Niro had some real wheelspin potential while this seems a little duller. Regardless it's still plenty quick for daily life and only the driving enthusiasts (like me) will be wanting for more power
The long leadtimes might mean you just have to settle for what's available quickest. EV6'S are now on a 1 year waiting list now here in the UK, luckily I got mine last October, one of the very first people to take delivery
raw materials and supply chain disruption, plus costs of transportation gone up insanely. even Tesla is raising price. 10% is not even covering increased expenses for manufacturers
@@kiuklee90 fully agree
When I was considering a Model 3 early last year they started at £39,990, now they are £46,000 (and 1 year waiting list). Quite the increase in 12 - 18 months
No mention that I heard of the Heatpump option that comes with it in UK market hopefully all markets though it should be standard not option. I love the two tone colour scheme and means I don't have a boring white or whatever colour car gives it character, but each to their own. I am looking forward to this EV, on my shortlist for awhile now and current #1 on the list.

@6:40 … about that lane departure system. There’s a button on the steering wheel to turn that off with one press. Can’t have looked very hard if you couldn’t find it!
I was waiting for you to say something like that about the charging cable 😂
I really like the look of this inside and out, but I wouldn't change my Kona Electric for one. Better range, much quicker and better equipped.
They missed a trick not improving the battery size/range on the new Niro.
Battery size adds more cost and weight. Its a fine line having a longer range and never using it is very costly.
@@chrishart8548 I would happily pay for a longer range. My Kona officially does 300 miles and I've managed that several times. Never understood why the Niro had a much smaller range desire having the same drivetrain (although the Kona has a lot more torque despite having the same output as the Niro)
i own the old shape eniro for around 3 months now would i add an extra 10% to buy this one no i would not
only thing i think kia made a mistake in is no electric Sportage.

Mat in this video: I really like this grill effect there!
Mat in the previous video: Fake grills are one of the worst trends in the car industry!
The KIA NIRO looked like a tad underpowered.
Maybe it's because on an EV it's obvious that it's just for style, as it's often glossy and opaque and no EV needs a big grille (if I'm not mistaken), while fake grilles on petrol cars just make them seem like they're tryting to trick people into believing they're sporty cars? idk, im just guessing
Nice review subscriber from 🇰🇪 kenya
Matt always have great quality reviews
I bought this car new 2 months ago and I absolutely adore it! Mine is a non plug-in hybrid and I wouldn't have anything else! I get 53 miles to the gallon and I dig the hell out of it! It's all of the car I wanted and it's gorgeous. I love that color of blue that I got it's so sexy. I can pick it out of a crowd in a mile. Here's the kicker, I bought the new Kia ev6 before that! What a mistake! I traded that thing in before it had 600 miles! There is absolutely insufficient infrastructure for charging electric cars on the road. You will not use anything slower than a DC plus fast charge and they are few and far between. Here's how few and farther between they are, where I live in eastern North Carolina interstate 95 runs straight north to south. There are count them 3 DC plus charging stations in all of the capital of Raleigh. There are only three on the entire route along i-95. There are zero east of i-95 in all of North Carolina and all of South Carolina and much of Georgia and much of Virginia. You will not sit and wait for anything less than a DC plus charge. Takes too long. You'll be cussing any all-electric vehicle that you get right now I promise you that! And by the way upgrading your home service to put in a plug is around $1,000, $500 for the plug from the car to the outlet and 500 bucks to have an electrician run a circuit from your panel to your plugin.
In the US that is. I literally have a charging point outside my condo here in Amsterdam. Hopefully you will get to that point soon!
In Europe we have like hundreds near and within the city,so its better EV
@@zanafer you are so right sir! That would truly be the turning point!
I work for Kia and I can’t wait for us to get this car as a Demo!
Maybe next month.
I’m going to test drive this next day so looking forward to it.
I have an e-soul at work, it also has 204hp and a range of about 450km, the kia does a great job and it’s one great car to drive. And I have to say that I like the steering wheel on the e-soul much more than this one on the niro.
enjoyable video as always, what are your thoughts on the hybrid version? I'm considering it but not ready to make the switch to full electric yet.
Mate I had a hybrid version 2017 model it's the best of both on average I got 70mpg and of course it wasnt a hot hatch but then again it's not designed for speed. I am sure that the new niro will be more refined than the older one.
@@bbar182 its better than NIRO.
@@purwantiallan5089 yes that's what I said the 2022 model is better than the 2017 model.

Hey Matt! HEV and PHEV versions of this car does not have a turbo engine, just a regular 1.6L ones
The NIRO still lacks power compared to Mini Clubman VGT.
@@purwantiallan5089 If you need power just buy hybrid Sportage, no? Mini is too overprice IMO
Hi Matt given what’s happening with inflation & cost of fuel can you PLEASE do MORE videos of most fuel efficient cars AND electric cars with longest range. This is more important than ever now.
To turn off the lane departure warning just press and hold the lane keep assist button located on the steering wheel, it looks like a steering wheel with two lines next to it
Kia and Hyundai are really gonna be the companies that tempt me over to electric car ownership it would seem. Polestar/Volvo/Tesla/Mercedes etc just dont do it for me (Dont get me wrong, theyre nice cars but as an example the Volvo C40 electric only is a smallish car in a big body and is rather expensive. This Niro is a good size for the 38 grand that the "2" model would set you back. I dont understand how the EV6 is 4 grand more for the base model despite probably being less practical.
I'd love to know Matts opinion on which EV would be the best VfM if you wanted a car that could do 200+ miles on a charge from all of the manufacturers (Something that would cater to the kind of person who normally owns an estate car for practicality reasons)
I think the Korean EVs look great.
But they are suffering from huge reliability issues. Genesisbis ranked in the bottom 5 for least reliable cars. And then their main stream cars are catching on fire and always ahvign issues. You can just go to their Instagram pages and just see the nightmares people are having.
If they can't deisgm a good ICE car after building them for decades I doubt they can build a good EV.
@@baronvonjo1929 Kia ranked pretty high on the car wow reliable and most sites
@@UnderWarranty Just don't trust them. A coworker got a Kia K5. Great looking car. But less than a year into ownership a LED went out in the foglights. Small thing I know. But if they can't get the little things right I wouldn't trust them to make a engine or battery. If you want to buy one go ahead. There are just brands out there with better quality. I would never recommend anyone to buy a Korean car.
@@baronvonjo1929 As a Auto Electrician i wouldn't recommend buying any car. I make most my money from putting so called luxury German brand cars right. Hi Mat, the lane departure is a pest and should be like a Tesla which is OFF as default and you turn on when you need it. Sadly Kia has it the other way around.
However, you can easily turn it off by holding the button on the steering wheel with a lane and steering wheel symbol for 3 seconds. No need to faff with the screen and menu. It's a short cut to turning it off 👍.

I have the 22 plate older version Niro. Would consider swapping it but wanted to know if the newer one has the same annoying things as the older one.

One question Mat. Does regenerative braking inform other drivers via braking lights? If not, this could be pretty dangerous.
Of course 🤦🏻♂️
Deceleration must be visible
Regen braking is braking so it lights up your brake lights.
Brake lights in any car - EV or not - must legally light up at a certain g of deceleration.

I mainly don't trade,I invest with a professional assigned by a crypto company who trades for me on weekly basis and you can invest your capital to get weekly returns from your investment and i came across Bryan Nelson and i also gave try and ever since then I've been financially stable 😎.
