      @@theminotaurs Yeah for sure. The great thing was that pretty much everyone in attendance was an advanced, pro engineer so there was no talk about "what compressor settings do you use on xxxx" and stuff like that. It was all about the philosophy of tapping into the right brain and essentially how to evoke and enhance the emotion of a piece of music using the common tools we all possess. It was also cool to learn once and for all that there are no magic tricks or techniques that these guys use that makes them elite. It was refreshing to be slapped in the face with the realization that if I wanted to see gains I had to work harder, improve my mindset and maybe improve my room acoustics. It wasn't going to be because of some complex routing scheme with processors that the rest of us have never heard of. Did I learn some new techniques? Yes, but again none of it was magic and most or all of those techniques are available in hundreds of tutorial vids here on RUclips.
      Aside from all that, La Fabrique is absolutely stunning! The pictures are beautiful and while they do the place justice, being there is just a whole other level. The other participants were all fabulous people from all over the world and we learned a lot from each other. Most of us still keep in touch on some level. Manny had his wife and kids there so in addition to the seminar, we got to hang, chat, eat and drink wine every day. We played soccer with Manny and his kids. The whole thing was insanely cool.

      @@scotthammond7220 Yo can you please explain what that means to evoke an emotion in music, I always hear Manny say that what draw him to mixing is the fact that you can change emotion with frequencies but I never understood exactly what that ment. What is emotion? How can we achieve emotion by making EQ changes or using other processors?

    • @scotthammond7220
      @scotthammond7220 2 года назад +4

      @@yoelwww I think it comes down to the perception of each individual in terms of how they think about what they're doing. Dave Pensado, Manny and some other people often talk about EQing things not so that they "sound" right but that they "feel" right. Ultimately, it's about trying to find what it is about a particular song that makes it work and putting that element on steroids. A lot of times this boils down to enhancing the drama between sections by way of contrast. You know, stuff like, when the chorus happens, increasing the volume on the master, adding or increasing top/bottom end so the whole thing gains more "height", spreading out the stereo field in those sections compared to everything being more narrow in the verse, and/or changing/adding effects. I remember, for example, he talked a bit about using compression on John Mayer's Gravity to extend the buzz of the snare wires on the bottom mic. To him, that made the song feel and groove right. Other times it might be about how to handle breaths on a vocal in particular ways to make the song feel more intimate. At the end of the day, the artist is going for the right vibe in each song, not exactly the cleanest, more technically perfect mix. Pensado talks in an interview somewhere about mixing a Christina Aguilera song and how he had it sounding technically amazing, while thinking to himself "I'm the best mixer on the planet". He went to supper and came back to immediately realize that it was the wrong approach entirely and had to go back several steps so that the song felt right. That's a story that sticks with me. For me, it comes down to listening carefully to the tracks to establish the intent for each song and trying to make the end result drip with such intent. I don't know if this helps at all but it's probably the best way I can try to explain it from my perspective, at least.

    • @xanderpills
      @xanderpills 2 года назад

      I have the feeling Jaycen and Andrew quite wouldn't be a good pair. Too different character. Other is an egoistic dude driving around in a sportscar and talking more about pumping iron than mixing, the other is a modest, longtime audio geek.
      Serban then? I don't think anyone's even gotten to interview him.

    • @maximboe
      @maximboe 2 года назад

      @@xanderpills I don't know either so I can't comment on their actual character. But considering how many gems Jaycen has given the mixing community I think he is far from "egoistic". But he does tend to dominate conversations and be his own hype man.
      Serban is practically a ghost. But his long-time assistant engineer has posted a ton of valuable information about their process on Gearspace. Getting him (John Hannes) on the show would be a great match and more realistic than Serban. But one can hope I guess. I think it's maybe more of a shy/no time/interest in publicity combination for Serban rather than "protecting" information though.

      @xanderpills 2 года назад +1

      @@maximboe Agree on the tips with Jaycen, there are good things indeed you learn from him, I actually do utilize many of the tricks (I practically mix for a living as well).
      Serban doesn't seem to like much attention, maybe he's seen how the artists suffer from lack of privacy and wants no limelight. Who knows.
