In this video, Lee Morris of Fstoppers explores broad and short lighting for portrait photography in the studio. Using the FujiFilm GFX 50s Medium Format camera and 120mm Macro Lens, along with a Manfrotto Tripod and Ballhead, Lee is able to create two completely different looking portraits by placing the light on different sides of his subject. All images are edited and retouched using AlienSkin Exposure X4

I really like this new method of bringing tutorials to the people. While the bigger tutorials like Peter Hurley's is probably on another level, it was (and probably had to be) priced too high for most.
Hope this new format works out for you!
Absolutely perfect video. Thorough yet...not boring. And not confusing with over-explaining/under-explaining. Thank you.
I love fstoppers plus you really do have some of the best content.
Lee, you totally forgot to say how you can add a neutral layer, overlay a lighting effect or add a texture, and use the eraser to create a mask for that layer so that the texture is only on the background for instance. OR how you can add any combination of effects to a layer, like a blur layer having a tad of grain you already matched to the grain of the rest of your image so when you blur with the mask you don't need to go back and add grain to match it, it is already there. Yes I am an enthusiastic Exposure X4.5 user (LUTs in Exposure FTW!!!)
Thanks for all the sponsors and also fstoppers to provide such an information thanks ones again.
Someone take a picture, this is the first kind/reasonable person on RUclips ;)
@@FStoppers yall dont enjoy all the negativity and shit talking that took over comment sections across the world?
Thanks to the sponsors and you guys!
Your reviews and videos lately have been just incredible. You have convinced me to subscribe!
Been following your channel for years but after this video I am subscribed with notifications on. Seeing the gear you use to make quality images is great promotion for your sponsors.
I agree the last 2 images are the best
wow these poses got good fast, as soon as you gave him the first directions.
Great examples
GFX 50s can pull back AMAZING information in the shadows. It captures sooooo much information from that 3-year-old sensor that I am excited to see what they come up with for the replacement
I really appreciate this way of offering content.
I'll try Alien Skin.
Man, that camera looks like a beast. Great video !
Thank you for this video! It has given me a new understanding that I haven't thought of before....
Have ya'll worked with On1 RAW as another choice as a substitute for Adobe Lightroom? So far, I've found it to be a very good system for managing, cataloging and editing my RAW images.
I just don't want to *rent* my software, like with Adobe CC....
I use Alien Skin Exposure X4 for 95% of my editing and love it I can't believe there is a tutorial with it and not with lightroom! YAY!!!!!!!
is Alien skin Exposure x4 easy to use? i like using LR but its gotten really slow...
@@DJSIC82 It is similar to LR. Some tools are way better and others are not as advanced so it is very much "what is the right tool for you" there is like a month free trial for Exposure X so just try it out.
Fantastic process and final photos.
Great video! Love the indept sponsor spots, not just a short talk
I'm in love with alien skin!
That 3rd one is sick as hell!! Great vid!
i did first set up yesterday with bigger lights. 59 inch high to the side put close and a 72 inch to the side as a soft filler to keep the shadows
If you are intending on using a fill light to soften the shadows and don't want to create cross shadows on your background, why aren't you just using a light on your background too? You can also use this to create checkerboard lighting, where you create more contrast by having the darker side of his face contrasted by a lighter background, and the lighter side of his face contrasted with a darker background.
Nice video love the way the photos came out.
That Exposure software looks pretty damn good. All the useful things for editing from lightroom and photoshop in one package.
Awesome, Lee. Just put together a small lighting kit this morning, so this video is pretty timely. Thanks for all the great content!
so Cinematic lighting , cool
just wondering, is it a tutorial or advertisement video of all products!!
Both, they earn money with sponsors on their tutorials. Id rather have this then ads
@@TheShipMunksTV Id rather have an ad and a a tutorial with products they actually use, not pedal.
Thanks for he video. Enjoyed the lighting arrangements and comments about them.
My man you killed it!!! Thanks for the knowledge
We gotta helo Fstoppers to pass the Million subscribers. 742 is not enough. Let's go for 5 million guys.
I prefer the slightly off-brand, Menfrotto tripod. One leg is a little shorter than the other two, but it still seems to hold the camera.
would you choose alien skin over capture 1?
When everyone is getting better content by being sponsored like this, that fine. Its a win-win... A Hasselblad should rake in a two-hour video dollar-4-dollar ;)
I know you said not to puttwo lights directly across from eachother but now I want to make some sort hard shadows on my face with that to make weird shapes lol.
Very nice, thank you!
Images came out looking great man
Very interesting. And you are really professional.
I need that camera!!
Awesome video, Lee!
!!! Great Job Bart !!!
Brilliant great tutorial and Im sold on that software. I would find it really interesting to see how you go about taking photos of people who are not already pretty good looking. With a great looking guy or Woman you are already at a massive advantage in creating a portrait. If you were taking a photo of me for example (who is not at all photogenic !!) how do you navigate around all the insecurities of the model and get a great image ??
Believe it or not everyone has their own insecurities...sometimes the beautiful ones have even more insecurities. Bart in particular didn't really want his photo taken at all either. The trick is to make your subject feel like no single snap of the camera means anything or has any worth. The only photo that will be released is going to be an excellent photo. -P
Something I use with a buddy of mine who is not necessary bad looking, but rather an awkward human who makes himself look creepy in EVERY photo he takes, I capture him by using angles (like an angle of him looking down while the focus is on his long beard, or cheekbone. Or him looking away. When this dude looks directly at the camera, I find myself wanting to tell him to be human and to relax and not to be so creepy. Which makes it uncomfortable even for me. But he's a great friend and always fun for conversations.
great software... worst editing...
Great Video! But are you sure this isn't William from Westworld?
OMG you are totally right! -P
Amazing!!!
Thanks Lee!
My first time watching your videos.... GREAT! Professional, assured, confident, informative....
A question, by the by... I notice you have adopted the fairly widespread technique of using two video cameras to capture your talk sections. One camera is one you talk to... but the other comes in intermittently at an angle (as if the viewer is a third-party overhearing/watching a conversation that he is not directly a party to).
I’m just wondering why you’ve picked up on this habit.
For me, it gives me a frisson when it happens. I’m suddenly shut out of your orbit, albeit very briefly. I’m temporarily excluded. The effect is like an alienation. (Almost like a piece of Brechtian theatre). It has a chilling effect.
It’s very similar to the unsettling effect of seeing (many, many, many years ago) the first young people wearing their caps back-to-front. Why are they doing it? And why is everyone copying them?
fantastic work. I am gonna buy a nikon z7 now...
Perfect
The Fujifilm would be my go-to camera... If it would be much cheaper. :o( I had to buy a Canon 5DSR instead. - "The poor man's 50MP-cam". 😛 But thanks to the sponsors an you guys for providing such videos!
wow so cool.. i like this method
Could you do a video showing difference between a photography monitor and a regular monitor that is not for photo editing without sRGB, adobe color space. I want to know if there are any difference in how you edit color on the photography monitor vs non photography monitor. If there is a video like that please point me to it thank you.
you can get accustomed to any decent monitor, it takes a bit of time and experience.
drkastenbrot yes I know but I’m seeing different colors when I looked at the same image from one monitor to another, including my iPad and my phone and also my MacBook. So I’m wondering if it’s worth it to buy a color calibrated monitor suited for photography. If that would make a difference.
@@Orions_Journey try changing the profile of the monitors you use to sRGB and working in that colorspace. Pictures will always look different on other devices and prints, it just takes experience with your editing monitor.
You can buy a very accurate monitor if youre already somewhat experienced but it wont magically make your results good. Make sure your current monitor is not absolutely terrible in terms of color reproduction (cheap or very old/broken).
You mention tethering cameras for direct import and processing into X4, can you elaborate on this and does it work with all cameras such as Sony A7iii? Most tethering capable software only works with Canon and Nikon? Great video by the way, I learnt a couple of crucial little tips that will really lift my game! Thanks
watch this video with 4k quality. and i'm shocked, amazeee
I might suck at counting. But isnt that more than 2 lights?
Hi very beautiful tutorial video, loved how you use two light set up to take such amazing potrait and its very informative and helpful for people like who are amateur photographs.loved it very much very helpful.can you please tell me where i can also get such beautiful presets.Cheers Buddha bless you all and stay safe with your families always🙂❤❤❤
Wait, I thought it was a video about lighting, there is so much product review that I can even remember why I was watching this video in first place hahahah
Not to mention that Lee criticizes amateur photographers so much that it doesn't even seem that this channel was made entirely for these people...
Put the white board on the other side and you will got the result that you wish for. No need to bring that extra two lights.
question , why not shooting HDR style so you can get all details and then play in post with em ? bad idea ?
on the first setup, the fill light on the same side as the key light did pretty much nothing from what i can see?
Needs moar Ritz camera stories!
Funny I don't want this to overpower and kill the vibe...was thinking the same exact thing with the music choice
Bart? As in "Epic RITZ Camera Death Spiral Story" Bart? Ohh you should tape this final RITZ Camera story in front of a live audience. Id'e fly to PR to see this.
What was clicked at 27:20 to get the smoke to disappear from in front of his face, please?
14:47 Okay, This guy could sell watches now.
Uuhh, if this was meant to be a commercial for AlienSkin Exposure, it worked. I just ordered x6.
i am the type of photographer who wants to spend a lot more time on shooting, rather than editing. just 2-3 minor tweaks and thats it!
Looks better in color
I know its hurtful, but it would be informative to discuss the model’s face and how to maximize the good aspects and minimize the the flaws. For a male model, how do you maximize the jaw line. If the model has a big nose for example, how might that change things vs a weak chin, vs over weight etc.
SUPER. SUPER , THE BEST

What happened to the Benro tripod? Lovin the 055 Manfrotto though. :)
I am surprised from your lens choice which may indicate that you are using medium format with the mentality of full frame, why not using a wider angle with this gorgeous backdrop that you did not do any justice and use his athletic body to get the MEDIUM FORMAT LOOK?
Shallow DOF? Heck with it when you have the luxury of shooting with this magnificent camera on this brilliant BG and this amazing subject.
excellent
Do you ever use a light meter?
If you're shooting at 125, how is your camera picking up enough light to view the subject?
With mirrorless cameras, you can set the EVF to show either the exposure set by the settings (which would be black) or you can set it to view a bright view like you would see with an optical view finder. Many people like seeing what the exposure of the captured image would be but when shooting with strobes this can be a problem. Because of this you def need to switch these two modes often and it's one of the reasons I get kind of frustrated with EVFs in general. Personally I like always seeing a bright viewfinder regardless of what my settings are but most photographers prefer seeing the image as it would record to the file. -P
Did you guys switch from Nikon? Or do you still mainly shoot d850s??
We shoot everything really. Lee recently bought a Sony A7RIII and I still like the D850 although as you will see in our next video...we recently destroyed our D850. -P
@@FStoppers colour me upset, lol I just upgraded from a d7100 to a d750 and I love it, sad to see a Nikon get destroyed
How do I know when to use the erase tool? Like, what if I want to erase part of a tool I used, but it erased all the work under it, too, instead?

Mr. Clean really takin shots at that handsome af guy for his looks... 🤣🤣🤣
Why did add you add background scores its very disturbing
Hey guys, I need the help of the internet.
Im a new photographer and I need to know , where should I spend my next ~$500 , so far I have my camera + Speedlight + Softbox & Tripod (for the speedlight).
1.The tripod + the ball head $ 400ish
2. The boom stick + Godox SLB60W $560ish
I like portrait and food photography, so im in an internal debate.
Any help will be greatly appreciate it.
If the video lights are a problem, turn then off, or at least set them dimmer.- BAK
Great video! i would have loved to see the reaction of the model when he saw the shots.
In typical Bart fashion, it was a "yeah, those look nice" type a reaction. -P
People want free videos on youtube but then complain when the sponsors who paid for it get their air time.
Pro photo b10 Lights ?
Thought this was a tripod ad I wanna buy it tho
Many thanks for the great content. I just started trying to learn a bit about photography. Could you (or someone here) let me understand this? The softboxes have a continuous light but on the moment of the shot, i see it works like a flash? What the light source inside the softboxes? Strobes, bulbs or something else? Thanks a lot
The continuous light you see is called a modeling light, monolights or studio flashes have them so you can kinda see how the light falls on your subject, but when you take a picture the actual flash flashes and that ends up being the light your camera picks up. Since the flash is so bright it overpowers the ambient light and the modeling light.
@@NatashaAlouqua thank you so much for the explanation. 🙏🙏
Curious to know what monitors you use
239 and 240 file possible create to stereo image for looks 3D TV and other method view
When he said the fastest sync speed was one over 25 did he mean 1/25? Because that seems like a pretty slow shutter speed?
1/125
@@FStoppers I thought that might be it, thanks for the reply.
Most cameras have highest dynamic range @ iso 200 not 100
Thank you for the lighting setup for portraits but Its like copy Lightroom and Paste to new location. Rename it Alien Skin X 4. YaY new software. I dont see any different than quick color grading tool.
Exposure X4 is designed for film simulation and analog special effects. It has tons of gorgeous film looks, accurate grain simulation, darkroom special effects like cross processing, and overlays like light leaks and lens flares. Along with that, there tools for everyday raw editing, portrait touch up, and fast organizing.
@@ExposureSoftware lol ! basically its Lightroom and Snapseed then. I don't see professional usage of Light leaks and lens flares. a person who wants to color grade will never use this. Also he is saying it has potential to replace photoshop i would say not even close.
@@TheChirag08 Check out #myexposureedit on Instagram and you'll see lots of amazing shots made with Exposure. You'll see color grading, special effects, film looks, and more!
Thank You. Will check. From a user perspective you guys could have done a better job with the interface instead of just making it look exactly like lightroom. I mean it looks like a doppleganger with extra powers. 😂
@@TheChirag08 That's a fair point. We have some improvements planned to the UI - stay tuned! :)

17:26 i see Dean Winchester🤔🤔🤔
He says f4 aperture equals f3.1 on a full frame
Amazing, too bad that it’s going to be difficult for ppl that likes to take pics themselves, going back and forth trying to figure where’s the proper light and posing same time
This guy looks like a young Peter Weller. Robocop
None of the shots I saw were good though...
is there a link to the presets?
