Thank you for this review showing the differences. I just ordered one. I remember how hard it was to access these toys back in the day and am glad Bandai is re-releasing them. Frontier and SDFM were my two fave series in the Macross universe.

I first got into the macross toy collecting thing in early 2000s. Cannot believe how long ago it was. I still have my old Yamato VF-1 toys. Time is flying. I wonder why Elon Musk hasn't built transforming space fighting craft yet?
Thanks for the review. I've seen the US releases pop up all over the place and was debating if it was worth it. Not a fan of the vf171 since it is specifically designed to be shot down but at least you can get these toys with little hassle under the global license deals. 🎉

I do wonder if Bandai would make the other Macross VF's that are rarely shown in the TV series and movies, like the VF-9, VF-5000, VF-3000

You can touch them? Bandai stuff usually breaks when you do this.

@@mrstarfishh33 Get it and find out. But I think the YF-19 is probably my fave mecha design. Looks good in both the battroid and fighter mode. Also Isamu Dyson is as close to Maverick from Top Gun movies in a macross franchise we could ever get. I got the Bandai Chogokin of the YF-19 and love it. I also bought the Arcadia one a long time ago.

I am a huge fan of the 171 design, especially the canon fodder color scheme, and I believe I am not alone here. But that exploding knee issue on the Nightmare Plus still left a very bad taste in my mouth. An expensive toy that I only transformed once, and the next thing I knew, the knee joint simply dissolved… wth!!! Having said that, I would still buy a new version if only they would redesign the toy, but I just don’t think it will happen.
My Nightmare Plus exploded. I could never find anyone printing 3d parts to fix it. Its a shame, it was one of my favorite designs.
Great comparison, have the original but no "armored parts", still dicding if i should get this set with all included, and keep one in robot mode with armored parts and another in fighter mode
my money is already on the yf-19 that came out some time ago.
Bandai will never give us a cannon fodder reissue but dammit the 171 Plus deserves a Revival. I've come into possession of a Plus that was "unopened" by Mandarake's standards, and while it's overall in good condition it's definitely true the plastic it was built from is a truly cursed batch, with microfractures on the infamous black triangles.
Still love and admire the insanity behind its engineering, though. The mad scientist who came up with those leg swivels would probably tell all of us how the design is perfect and it's our fault for manhandling the toy that it's so prone to breakage.
The black glossy parts at the joints are with that denser grey plastic it seems.
Now I hope the YF30 will get a update and reissue
How do your store your collection? Display case? In their original boxes? Where do you find the room??
I live in a place with a lot of storage so the toys are squirreled away in their boxes.
I have all of these which to this day I've never transformed. I don't think I'll ever transform the Nightmare Plus and will either just leave it in fighter mode or sell it. Isn't there a Nightmare Plus bundle going to be released soon?
No word or teases of a Nightmare Plus bundle yet, hopefully they do it.
Was there any improvement of those plastic triangles. I remember getting a brand new one and the triangles were already cracked. and after handling the jet and transformation, the triangles completely broke so I can’t keep the shoulder on.
Was that a Nightmare plus toy (the teal one)? Those have horrific issues with plastic but I haven't seen that problem on the Alto, Luca or Maruyama releases.
