I had a GM complain once that I gave them too much backstory. It was only a couple of pages but he didn't want to read it all. 😆 He said there are two types of players. 1. People like me that give him a novel that he doesn't want to read or 2. people who say their character has 'amnesia' because they have no creativity and can't be bothered to come up with backstory. I assume your 'orphans' complaint is because of the GROUP 2 people. They can't be bothered to come up with family history.
