It's a disgrace that this part of US history is not preserved. The USS Williamsburg also a presidential ship is stripped and sitting in a dock in Italy....another disgrace !

This country sends billions over seas, this vessel is a historic artifact, and should be a floating exhibit for the Smithsonian.

I agree but say dry dock it as a museum. Water will contribute to high cost upkeep. Look no further than the Battleship Texas. It's a hurting puppy.

The boat is an historical artifact which is in need of some very expensive woodwork. I think that it makes sense to restore it but I'm more inclined to see the exterior hull below the water line, done in a West System epoxy and fabric. It would be a more permanent repair and a fix that would require little to no further maintenance to keep it afloat and watertight. There are some very high tech fixes that would bring her back to life for good. The ship could be used for weddings, excursions along the ICW and a floating museum. Raccoons make boats toilets very quickly. They reduced my 42' wooden yacht to the point of no return. I wasn't even aware they were onboard as it was on boat stands and completely covered in boat wrap. They will always find a way on board if a boat sits in one place for more than a year.
When I opened up the covering I expected a pristine and dry boat. Instead every square foot of the boats interior was covered in feces, trash ,and every fabric of any kind torn into shreds and into piles of filthy bedding. There were over 40 raccoons in the boat.
They skillfully pulled the boat covering out enough to gain access to the gunnels. They walked along the side of the boat until they got to a window which was purposely left open with a screen for ventilation as is customary. The boat was not worth restoring. It was a total loss of over $100k invested over 10 years.
The boat was stripped of mechanical materials and crushed.
That is what the future of the Sequoia is if someone doesn't act now. What a damn shame.
Cmon you high tech millionaires and billionaires get off your wallets and save her from the scrap heap.
If I had the money I would be honored to be part of its restoration. Sadly I cannot buy there a plenty of people that could without batting an eye.
Invest 2 million bucks into the project and it's done!!
      I'll say a prayer.
      🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    From Wikipedia:
Sequoia is currently owned by Equator Capital, which acquired the vessel during October 2016 after a prolonged litigation with the previous owner. Equator Capital is controlled by L. Michael Cantor and is in the process of restoring the Sequoia. Once restored, Sequoia will be used as venue to promote conservation and particularly ocean conservation causes.
In September 2019, the Sequoia was moved by barge from Deltaville, Virginia, to Belfast, Maine, to be refitted by French & Webb Inc.

I lady who said she's happy she doesn't have to help pay for it? It probably cost her $.03 cents per year. She probably hates all those lazy people of food stamps too, but either doesn't know or doesn't care that corporations get billions of your tax dollars as gov. subsidies. That boat should be owned by the park service, inside of a museum (not on the water), and charge that lady admission to see it restored.

  • @mkllove

Ridiculous to move it north to restore it, there are talented shipwrights who could stay in VA to do this work in more favorable conditions. I used to see this grand boat on the Potomac and docked in DC years ago, what a terrible shame to see how this legal dispute has caused this beautiful boats decay... It is a living piece of history.

Old boats are like a endless deep hole to throw money into and continue as long as the boat exists. Best is, put it inside a house and let she stay there for the rest of exists. It should probably be done right after end service then she would have be preserved. It's sad too see such history and beauty decay. Thanks for sharing from Norway.

Brings me to mind of the U.S.S Potomac FDR's yacht also know as the "Floating White House". She at one point sank and then was raised, was left to rot, as well, and was very nearly scrapped but was rescued and restored and now resides in Oakland California. I see from an recent article, the Sequoia is on her way to Maine to be restored. It would be a shame to loose such a piece of history.

This is sad to let this Historic Yacht go down hill. We need the Smithsonian to get on board and do what we do best. It needs to be a part of the Navy. Cliff Robison is right. Just think of all the people in DC that comes to see Wash DC. Set it up by the cherry blossoms. We were just there with the Flight to Honor Vets. It would pay for itself. If you love the USA Historic you would love this. Thanks RJA.

It's not a 'ship' in the sense of an ocean-going vessel, Herbert Hoover's fishing for billfish notwithstanding. She's more of a river barge. Every system aboard is obsolete. No one would build a yacht that size out of timber today; it would be aluminum.
