He's Skinny But INSANELY Strong! (HERE'S HOW)

  • Have you wondered how someone can be skinny but insanely strong? In this video, I am going to cover how Jesse is not the biggest guy in the room, but is certainly crazy strong, especially for his bodyweight. Not only that, but Jesse is going to share with you his tips for getting insanely strong while being skinny.
    Get Stronger Here - athleanx.com/x/skinny-but-strong
    Subscribe to this channel here - bit.ly/2b0coMW
    First things first, people often get wrong Jesse's dimensions when they take a look at him. Some of his stats may actually surprise you.
    Height: 5 foot, 10.75 inches
    Weight: 165 lbs
    So while he doesn't look like he can lift any crazy weights, you might just be surprised at how strong Jesse really is. Believe me, it's probably a lot stronger than most would think he would be based on his body size.
    The first lift that Jesse covers is the deadlift and what he did to get to the point where he hit a 550 lb deadlift personal best. His first tip for skinny guys looking to get strong is to use leverages to your advantage and utilize the wedge. Instead of pulling the bar straight up his shins and thighs, he pulls the bar back into his legs while pulling straight up. By "wedging" himself under the bar, he finds that lifting hundreds of pounds off the ground to be a lot easier.
    The second tip for the deadlift is the change in volume and intensity that Jesse was doing when it came to his deadlift sessions. He decided to trade in volume for intensity to get insanely strong. This meant that instead of performing sets of 5 or more reps, Jesse was performing singles, doubles, and triples with heavier weight than he normally would. Obviously, he had to cut back how many deadlift sessions he was doing each week, but the trade of volume for intensity worked for him.
    For skinny guys looking to get stronger legs and a stronger squat, Jesse has two tips here that helped him to build up to a 430 lb squat. First is a tip on technique and squat form; raising the chest while moving it at the same time as the pelvis. Instead of "pointing the nipples to the ground", he raised his chest up and pinched his shoulder blades back, which in turn helped him to move his hips at the same time as his chest when ascending on the squat.
    The second tip the Jesse has for skinny guys to get stronger is based on, again, his programming. Because the squat is not as taxing on the body, he was able to do 3 squat sessions every 10 days. However, he was still using heavy enough weight to be performing triples, doubles, and single repetitions.
    While some might say that there is no way that Jesse is a strong bench presser, they might be right, but for a reason you might not expect. He broke his collarbone snowboarding a few years back and it has caused him some pain and discomfort whenever he performs the barbell bench press. However, Jesse made an adjustment and instead of benching through pain or not benching at all, he utilized dumbbells instead.
    While you might not think a skinny guy is strong, especially when it comes to bench pressing, you might be surprised by Jesse's strength. His first tip for getting stronger on the bench press is to eliminate the discomfort. To do this, Jesse took a tip from Jeff and found the proper "touch point" on his chest. This allowed for the stacking of the elbow under the wrist under the dumbbell which helped create stability an stability is one of the key things to look for when dealing with shoulder pain or discomfort.
    Jesse's second tip to get stronger on the bench press is to utilize a technique called leg drive. Leg drive allows you to almost slide your body up the bench which helps create a small amount of momentum to help press heavier weight. This applies to both the dumbbell bench press and the barbell bench press.
    I'm sure you've heard the argument that pullups are easy for anyone that's skinny. However, to get really strong on the pullup, Jesse has two tips that you can bring to the gym with you. The first tip is to add weight to the exercise. Doing weighted pullups, even a few sets and reps, will help you get stronger so that when you return to bodyweight, you will fly up and down on the bar.
    Be sure to watch the video for Jesse's second tip on how to get stronger on the pullups.

    I've been training consistently since 1979, been in a lot of gyms, trained with and seen a lot of strong lifters and those lifts are pretty impressive for a natural guy. The problem today is that most of the people we see posting on social media are on the sauce and watching the weights they lift skews the viewers' perceptions of what heavy is. 3.3x bodyweight deads, 2.6 squat and 100lb dbl presses at 165 are no joke. Props to you.

      100% I trained for 3yrs and I eventually quit because of the disappointment of myself compared to all the t-boosters in the gym. None of them would admit it. I am 6'4" and I have been as low as 145lbs and after 3yrs training got up to 200 lbs with 9-12% body fat on all 3 sites. I hit the 1000 club with bench, deadlift and squat. My flexed bicep was 17.5 inches. Even so, with normal clothes, I looked normal at best (still slim) and no where near as chizled as these Superman, Wolverine, Thor, etc actors. I couldnt even get my lower abs to pop.
      Its real easy to let comparing yourself to everyone else kill your motivation, when everyone is likely not being honest about their 'supplements'.

    • @huiledenoix8014
      @huiledenoix8014 2 месяца назад +4

      Yeah, he just has a shirt. But when he flexes we see he's very muscular. The only thing that looks a bit skinny for such an impressive deadlifter, are the forearms. Probably because he has good hands, strong hands, he didn't need to develop his grip. Grip strength is crucial for deadlift, a lot of people hit their first limit because of their grip, and deadlift makes their forearms become more muscular. His forearms don't stand out, in deed. Probably because he has an excellent base grip.

    This is one of my favorite athlean - X videos as it really ties into the need for many lifters to lose weight. I have been powerlifting I am 73 now and I have been powerlifting for four years and because of the virus shutting down salad bars I gained a lot of weight. Once I got on track again with losing weight I found myself going down in weight categories in powerlifting but losing strength. I don't think it can be helped especially because some of my weight loss is implemented by fasting and certainly dramatic losses in weight cause you to lose strength but there really does need to be a different mindset in the power lifting community that more body weight is not necessarily good. It is certainly well documented to be unhealthy. Well I now have state records in Michigan in my age category and some lower for a whole bunch of weight categories and it's my plan to keep losing weight. So keep promoting being lean it's really good.

      Just say that through a comprehensive and intricately orchestrated process, the individual in question is currently embarking on a multifaceted endeavor aimed at optimizing their physical fitness and body composition. By strategically engaging in a meticulously designed regimen, this individual is diligently focused on augmenting their muscular hypertrophy, thereby elevating their overall muscle volume and density. In parallel, they are actively honing their neuromuscular coordination, diligently refining and enhancing their ability to exert precise control over their musculature, thereby attaining a heightened level of mastery over their bodily movements.
      Moreover, within the context of a meticulously calibrated nutritional plan, this individual is deliberately operating within a state of caloric deficit, thereby creating a carefully constructed energy imbalance. By doing so, they are effectively harnessing the inherent metabolic intricacies of their physiology, enabling their body to tap into its adipose tissue reserves for energy production. I did the same thing in high-school. People said I had retard strength. I was 6 foot 145 lbs 5% body fat. I was mostly legs from running track/ cross country and riding a bike 15 to 20 miles a day. I had a buddy who would workout every day. When we had a week or two off for break (year round school) I would not workout and when we came back I would max 15 to 20 lbs more than my friend. He started getting frustrated and began taking creatine and still I edged him out. I realized a decent rest/ recuperation period was key to boosting my max.

    Impressive and inspiring. I can't wait to start making gains. I have just a couple major pieces of gym equipment to install this month and as long as my shoulder joints and other issues heal....I should be making Jesse type gains in no time. Keep up the good work. Moving hips and chest in unison during squat is the good form I hope to achieve.

    • @jakubchrobry3701
      @jakubchrobry3701 10 месяцев назад

      Yes, it is good technique to move the body unison during the squat which requires hinging at the knees and hips at the same time. However, pointing the chest up and squatting more upright like Jesse usually makes the squat more quad dominate (like a front squat). So I'm a little confused how this would allow Jesse to lift more weight. That's the whole point of Mark Rippetoe's technique of pointing the chest down to get more engagement from the glutes and hams to lift more weight. Also, Mark trains to lead with the hips which can turn into a Good Morning type squat (as shown in Jesse's video of how not to squat).
      Do you have any knowledge on this? If not, check around when developing your training method. I'm not a fan of Mark Rippetoe, but his Starting Strengh progam seems to get a lot of recommendations.

    • @KeterMalkuth
      @KeterMalkuth 10 месяцев назад

      @@jakubchrobry3701 It depends on someone's strengths. Powerlifting results in a very posterior chain dominant physique. If someone's quads are more well developed, they might find the strength their quads can add to the lift is greater than that of their posterior chain, leaving the Rippetoe technique less effective for them at that stage of their development. Personally, while I definitely can lift more when squatting chest down, I don't compete in powerlifting and I prefer the squat being more quad dominant. Deadlifts and related lifts (Zercher deadlifts, good mornings, jefferson curls) are more effective for developing hamstrings, glutes, and spinal erectors. In terms of training efficacy, I think squatting as vertically and deeply as possible makes the most sense for strength development and function, unless you need the specificity for competition.

      I can tell you, very heavy weight makes your bones denser, but your layer of cartilage in your joints and your discs thinner. Then they do not have the blood supply to recover as fast as muscles. So lifting really heavy really often is a guaranteed way to injury.

    Lat exercises to actual failure is always interesting for me. My goal right now is a bodyweight pullup - I'm currently 270 pounds and have never been able to do a pull up in my life.
    It never 'hurts' like every other muscle I've trained, I just start feeling profoundly weak. It almost feels like when you've gone on a hike with a 30 pound backpack and then take the backpack off and can jump to the moon, just... backwards.
    Switching from pull up negatives til I can't support my weight at all to an inverted bodyweight row lets me get another few reps in, but even pushing those to failure with negatives doesn't come with any soreness or pain.
    It has definitely come with gains though; 3 months into training, have only lost 25 pounds of body weight (started at 295), but went from literally not being able to dead hang for any amount of time to being able to dead hang with a two-handed 3-finger crimp for 10+ seconds, scapular pull ups, actual pull up negatives for reps where I'm maintaining tension the whole way down, and I can do a 90 degree inverted row. My 1RM on lat pulldowns is creeping closer and closer to my body weight very quickly, I'm at around 210 for 6 reps right now.

    • @BrunoSantos-xk4dc

      have u tried pull ups assisted with resistance bands ? might feel like cheating at first but find the right resistance where u still have to put in a lot of effort and u'll def get your pull up game up . Negatives like u already doing are also very good , but I def would implement some assisted resistance band training , they're great for progressing through a lot of calisthenic exercises

    • @robertspeer6872
      @robertspeer6872 10 месяцев назад +1

      I've struggled with pull ups since putting on some weight and have been working at building them up again. The inverted bodyweight rows help a lot, been doing those too. I ended up getting some rings to hang from the bar so I can drop down and do those any time. Also, getting a set of bands helped. I've got bands that offset anything from 5-30#. I loop them over the bar, put one foot in, and do pull ups with some bodyweight offset in that manner. As I build up reps I move to smaller bands. Good luck with your journey!

    • @marcelbenner993
      @marcelbenner993 6 месяцев назад

      Just a quick thought: I mostly train weighted bodyweight stuff and I nearly never train for failure. I always stay in the 1 to 2 rep in reserve range. Thus I never really feel sore. But I worked up from being able to do 5 pull ups without weights to being able to do 5 pull ups with 22.5kg/50 pounds attached which is a third of my bodyweight. My 1rep max so far is 45kg/90 pounds which is 60% of my bodyweight.
      I think training without failure is much safer and your head can relax more... to me, this method has proven to be most effective at keeping me motivated over a long period of time without being completely drained after failure training.
