Back when umpires had a sense of humour and understood their place in the game. These days a player, manager, mascot, fan, even the organist (!) will get tossed for daring to question their eye sight (seriously, a freakin' *organist* got ejected for playing "Three Blind Mice" once, I kid you not).
Thanks for posting this. I had the San Diego Chicken baseball card but a friend stole it from me in 1984. I think chickens have a life span on about 5 years, so it is sad that the Famous Chicken probably died many years ago. That makes me feel sad. My friend said he saw it when he was a kid too and it laid a real live chicken egg on home plate
IIRC this was an exhibition series the weekend before the season began and were the 1st events EVER held at the MetroDome which accounted for some of the crowd
