The cloud pattern you saw from the top of the chairlift is the classic Canterbury Nor'west arch. (Google it for details). Not so common in winter, but in summer it is accompanied by very warm dry winds, similar to the Helm Wind in Cumbria and the Chinook in Canada. The low angle of the sun in winter will have provided the glow beyond the arch making it look like a sunset. Congrats on your jobs! All set for the winter! Stay warm!!
