This is my usual absolutely packed, super in-depth review where I obsess about the image and how to get the best possible results no matter how long it takes me to figure out! I cover the whole in-camera sharpening issue that plagues most smaller sensor cameras and shows how this is better but only if you shoot in the correct mode and don't screw up how you manipulate the footage. Luckily I give you lots of tips.
I also take about the sound problem, when/ if it gets fixed I will let you know here.

Fantastically detailed and fun review as always Philip (the coffee spilling clip never gets old😂).
I snapped up the Insta360 ONE X2 last year after watching your previous review and even though I've used it sparingly, on the occasion I've needed it, I've been able to get incredible shots that often define the entire video. I've used it inside a Cessna, parasailing and inside a cramped sleeper train cabin and the compositions I've got out of it really helped to tell the story.
For me personally, the step up in image quality is reason enough to get one, though shame they overlooked the damn microphone once again!
Thanks Chris! I hope you enjoyed your trip back to England. Would love to meet you in Japan sometime :)
@@philipbloom The sake awaits! We can play the sharpness drinking game to devastating effect🍻
@@philipbloom someone is using a fake Telegramm account for fake prime game.
@@philipbloom There is a fake account in comments pretending to be you offering me prizes. Just an fyi
@@sharingtherealworld there are many unfortunately and not just me, if you look at the name of the account it’s obviously not me.
This is exactly why I love your reviews. Not just another "oh it has a 1 inch sensor, so it is better" review. You alway go in depth of all the pros and cons. Great job again :)
Same, i love all your videos Philip.
That's my problem. I bought it because of the way they advertise the sensor...ugh. He's helping me though little by little!❤
Thank you for bringing Severus home with you. I'm a bugger for rescuing strays and the last one I adopted was F3 feral. For some reason she chose to trust me. It took me over 3 months (hard... HARD Brit winter) to get her to take shelter on the well deck of my boat. Less than a week afterwards, she decided to come inside and hog the Morso hearth. She was an old cat, ran like hell whenever anyone tried to get near her. Had her back leg mangled in a mink trap. In the five years she stayed with me: she was never willingly more than 3 feet away from me. She died peacefully last year and chose to do so on my lap with me stroking her head and crying quietly so as not to embarrass myself. Total respect to you Mr. Bloom. You judge the character of a man (or woman) by how they treat animals.
Thanks Chris. That’s a moving story, she lived out her last few years and in her last moments showed you how she felt about you.
I have forwarded your reviews to people who aren’t even involved with filmmaking at all. Your presence and explanations are pure relaxed entertainment. You’re like the David Attenborough of filmmaking. Hypnotic chilled vibes through and through. Keep at it Phillip, you are truly appreciated 🙏
I love your short films disguised as reviews. They are absolutely brilliant. Thank you for your efforts. I appreciate them immensely.
I love how you actually tell the truth about the products you review. We need to know about the good and the bad about any product.
Your production values are off the charts for a RUclips review, It's a movie. I am lucky to have stumbled upon your video.
OH goodness. Those last 5 seconds literally had me laughing out loud. The frustration on your face!
Excellent review Mr. Bloom.
As always, your honest, painstaking efforts and love of the feline people is a joy to experience. Thanks for all your efforts!!
Not the least bit interested in 360 cameras, still watched a 40 minute video about a 360 camera because: Philip. (And the cats.)
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for your service!
I was sold when you said your video had more cars in it than Brandon’s video. 😻
You always surprise me with your excellent concepts, filming, and editing. Your work is excellent and I can’t tell you how much you’ve inspired and taught me over the years. I hope all of the cats in your life are doing excellent. Cheers!
Watching one of your reviews is like putting on an old, well-loved pair of shoes. Comfortable, relaxing, and very familiar - as well as being incredibly informative. Thanks again.
Your videos are all tour de forces. I don’t know how you do as many as you do, given how long these must take to film and edit, or how you keep all of this data straight in your head. Kudos, sir. Another brilliant video that really redefines what it means to be a “RUclipsr.”
Brilliant video as always Philip. Not without its issues but still a significant upgrade over my current Insta360. Thank you!
Phillip you have the exact same taste in classical music as me and my high school band teacher. What a joy it has been to watch your films
The holy grail of reviews. I was contemplating which insta360 to go for video focused (x3 vs 1-inch 360). I think I will go with the 1-inch after your video. Thanks Philip!
Did you get it? If so, hows the audio and overheating?
@@scrollop I went with the x3 in the end, very happy with it :)
Amazing review! It's always a pleasure to see a new video of yours popping up in my sub feed, Mr. Bloom~ .. But this camera is 940€ ?! Jesus, it's double the price of the X2. For standard consumers / hobby-filmers and for using it as a secondary camera for weird and interesting shots, the X2 sounds like a WAY better deal for what it offers. Of course, this version does have some benefits to it - while still not being quite as capable as it should be for semi-pro usage - but man, that's some premium markup that I don't really feel is justified.
I would pay twice this if it was a proper pro-consumer camera, i could mix with my main camera. Unfortunately they are still in the action/toy camera market. ☹️
The Starry Night replacement was awesome!
Such an excellent review as usual THX. I just bought it and the thing that nobody seems to mention is you MUST remove the "cap" from the SIM card chamber of the Control Module in order to attach the 1-inch 360 lens onto it, and you have to find a safe place to store the cap otherwise you'd have no cap when you wanna attach it back to the other lenses. Furthermore, as I had the most frustrating experience with my OneR last year, getting that awfully thin and rubbery stalk back inside the tiny hole is no small feat cos after doing it a few times, the cap woldn't close properly... and as usual I brought it down to film in the shallow waters just off a beach, with calm waters that day, attached to the short floating GoPro Floating Stick dangling on my wrist slowly wading, then after a few clips took, seawater got in and shut off and wouldn't boot up again... completely ruin my OneR module AND its 360 lens, and so happened it was right AFTER the one year warranty! What's more Insta360 is a real bitch when it comes to reporting the incident, they kept asking for ridiculous details like the condition of the of the seawater current, the speed at which I was moving my arms in the water etc.. f*** them 🤬, cos I only wanted to BUY a new module and a 360 lens, I wasn't even asking for a refund, discount or anything! Hence I waited a year before purchasing the OneRS when it came out in Feb and now this 1" 360 lens, all for the extra clarity which I've always been dissatisfied with 360 cameras ever since my Ricoh M15, then S, then V (have I got the order right 🤔), then Insta360 OneX, OneR. Hope I didn't bore you with this long comment. (fyi, I'm just a casual occasional user of 360 cameras, GoPros and other spalsh proof cameras or iPhones in waterproof cases... all for whenever I go for water sports, boating or travels abroad to beach areas like Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia and when I get back home here in Hong Kong, I'd edit the clips on my iMac's Final Cut Pro for myself and my friends to reminisce, nothing too serious) 😅
Philip I'm so happy you have adopter her. Good for both you you. Best wishes.
Excellent review Philip. I discovered your channel after you reviewed the mini 3 pro and I absolutely love your reviews. Honest and spot on. Very few people do this imo. I was seriously thinking buying this camera but my reservations appear to be justified having just seen this video. Maybe I will wait for a little while. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
great answer at the end, time square almost got me. I was deciding on buying the 1 inch and you made me buy a zoom h3, great review
Thanks for the awesome review. One thing is for sure, GoPro has it's work cutout as far as the upgrade to the Max is concerned. That camera was released in October, 2019! 3 years is a LOT of time in tech.
What I like about Video Enhance AI is the ability to de-sharp image, especially from poor quality smartphone cameras which oversharpen its output video. Strange that other Topaz apps don't have that ability
Brilliant as usual. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the audio testing is by far the best i've seen on YT. Hugs to all your cats!
wearing the Ryan George shirt during the clone bit is perfect
Have been waiting for your review since this camera had been announced. Thank you very much.
Thanks for your expertise. I use the Insta360 One X2 while cycling on my recumbent trike. It has been great and a game changer to show me riding in the environment. I use the 3ft and 10ft sticks. The new 1” sensor camera is much heavier and holding it on a stick will be tiring. Even though the image quality isn’t great but what it offers is so much fun. I do wish no filters were available. I also use the DJI microphone as a recorder yelling out the time of the shot to help sync later with the video. I’ll pass on this camera and wait for Insta360 One X3.
I'd love a tutorial video on reframe in Premier. I recently bought an X2 and your review was a major factor in my decision as I had a Fusion before. Love the freedom the camera gives me for capturing surroundings.
I noticed that in the 'driving into the train' shot, the image was a little flickery. I guess shutter speed can't get slower useless they have ND filters.
A very detailed review. Thank you very much for all the trouble.
I love your cats' story. They are very adorable. Glad for you that you met.
It's fantastic that they put a one inch sensor on a 360 camera. Can't wait to have 360 medium format sensors in 2040!
Yeah it shouldn’t have been and it wasn’t. I think because it was initially 30p and I interpreted it as 25p but then sped it up in the edit to 110% the GoPro plug in did weird things to the motion. I forgot to fix it, had the same issue with the boat under the bridge shot initially.
I did not know about the audio. Now I know to record fully separately thanks
Awesome job as usual Philip! I just ordered it from the link. It would be great if you make a video on navigating the software and the output bitrates, etc. to get the best quality. You already got me to order Topaz when you originally talked about it. I think Topaz would be the best use for these files. Please do a PB quality video on the software if you get a chance! :)
How do you find the 1 inch? How is the audio and overheating? Would it be usable for more than 30 min videos in a 30C + environment in the sun? Thanks
@@scrollop It's a very nice camera. It still looks like a 360 image and I'm used to my Sony A7S3 image... so I don't use it as much as I first thought I would. But it's great to just capture for casual things and then decide later to frame. I've never recorded in the Sun for that long. But I've easily recorded 50min segments indoors.
I am so happy you finally brought her back to your home and that amazing catio… thank you for sharing this with us. It’s good to see how happy she is with you… speaking of your catio it would be nice to see how you lit it. It’s just perfect after sunset!
Well, you've heard this before; I came for the Kitties and loved it! Thanks.
Your reviews are just the best...would love to see one of the xh2s. I got my one yesterday. So far it's a massive upgrade to the XT4.
Great video. I've watched a lot of insta360 x3 reviews on youTube and have now ordered one. Your review has been the most honest appraisal of this product since it is easy to let the hype get to you....especially when your'e a gadget addict like me 🙂 Highlighting the 'not so good' shows none are a 360 killer for me and in fact showed the 360 will be more than fulfil my hobbyist needs. Keep it up.
Mine came in today, my first foray into 360, and this has to be the clunkiest piece of kit I've purchased in a long time. It's better than nothing, since I have a couple of projects coming up which require some 360 stills, but all these loose bits and bobs (mic adapter, mic bracket, USB-C cover door), the buried SD slot, the lack of a Davinci Resolve plug-in, 16-bit freakin' audio!, a clunky touch interface, a clunky app, it's awful. Obviously Philip, you've been wrestling with this product a long time, and have it down pat, but for a first timer, this workflow seems needlessly opaque and difficult. And by the way, I went to the Insta360 website to download a manual, and they don't have one ready for the 1-inch yet. There's a link, but you get the manual for the standard RS. Oh, and the mic bracket--you have to use the selfie stick to hold it in place? It feels like I've gone back 30 years in product design. Oh well. Is what it is.
How do you find the 1 inch? How is the audio and overheating? Would it be usable for more than 30 min videos in a 30C + environment in the sun? Thanks
Came for the review, stayed for the cats (and the review ofc becuase you always do amazing work)
Does it film in 360? How is the sound? Is there anything good, bad or ugly about it? Very thorough review Philip 👊
What’s 360? Sounds like a gimmick. Audio is amazing! Thanks for watching! 🙂
Great review Phillip. Thanks for sharing. I'm so tempted to buy one of these.
MANY of us LOVE our cats. you have taken it to a completely different level....its like a different category all together.
Thanks for the thorough review. might be just my iPad but i had a little difficulty hearing your audio. i kept raising volume but then the audio would fall a part a little. Cheers.
thank you so much for your very valuable, informative, entertaining and needed input. It is such a pity that the image quality still looks like an over-compressed low bitrate from a small sensor. What surprises me is that the Insta360 Pro 2 8K with its 6 cameras is much better, but not spectacular in quality ... so 360 image recording seems contrary to high quality artistically pleasing footage ? Because one would wander if the Insta360 would use 4 or 6 sensors, even relatively small ones like the "one inch" sensors, and higher bitrates, if the image would be finally pleasing and high quality. I have a "one inch" sensor Sony ax53 handicap, and when properly lit, the image can be really of good quality, so, "one inch" can be sufficient.
My best 39:37 minutes of the day i dont want to buy this camera or thinking for the near future i just enjoy watching your wonderfull reviews are so DAMN good !!!Hope to meet you one time in skiathos !
Love your reviews Philip unmissable. As an owner of this particular camera I can confirm it unfortunately does overheat if you try and record on it constantly for an hour indoors. Even in an air-conditioned theatre with no audience!
Look, I'm definitely not a cat guy but god your cats are so lucky and have a loving home!!!! Loved the review, thanks, helped me loads!
That was the best review of 360 camera I've seen, thank you I imagine it's a lot of work, thank you again
Thank you
Philip - thank you for these delightful, instructive and interesting thirty-nine minutes. I won't use or buy this for my next film, and I am not (and never have been) a fan of 360 anyway. But I found myself to watch this video anyway, and to enjoy it very much. That says it all.
Philip - I assume that "TEXT ME ON TELEGRAM" is not you and there must be a way to stop these scammers from doing this, right? RUclips/ Google should be able to stop this, shouldn't they? Thanks a lot!
Just makes you wake up to all the BS so many other RUclips creators put out with new releases. Almost all of them dropping ass missing reviews on day one to get sales. Well done Philip for keeping it real again
Cheers Phil, there were SOOO many sponsored by Insta360 videos. More than I’ve seen for a while. I hate this model that YT has now. There were so few actual reviews and what I saw missed so much.
@@philipbloom it makes the people doing the reviews loose credibility and probably makes them feel like they aren’t actually doing what their passion is. Let’s hope this trend doesn’t go on for to long
единственный заграничный блогер от которого можно услышать хоть какую то правду про камеру на обзоре
First time I've ever teared up in a camera review. (Sevi) Always delightful and informative, Philip. Thanks for working so hard at everything you do.
So the audio problem is still here ? No more updates for that camera since the release of the X3 ? -_-'
Great review of the new Insta360 camera, I like your relaxed chilling style, with a lot of technical knowledge. Greetings from Düsseldorf Germany
16 KHz is utterly absurd. Thanks for pointing this out, you might have saved my work!!!
It's ridiculous. Nobody else has pointed this out or even commented on the poor audio quality of the USB input, and it's always been like this. I wish I had tested it out on earlier cameras years ago but I've always just used body pack recorders...and still will!
@@philipbloom that's what I'm gonna do. Either Rode Lavs with internal recording (backup in camera) or Rode -> Zoom F2 -> Audio in. Zoom F2 should be small enough to fit somewhere below the camera. I'm waiting for the I3601" to be delivered on Wednesday, I'll tell you if it works.
Duct tape and good will could help ;)
On the homepage it now says 48khz, but does not specify if it’s for internal and/or external recording… could you maybe re-check with an current firmware camera… this is sort of the yes or no thing for me as I hate to have to record audio separately… other then that excellent reviews and love the cats as well!
Have they fixed the audio since this video was made?
Excellent vid. Thank you.
Great video as always Philip. I wish there was some insight when they might be bringing out the next 1-inch version as an upgrade to this. Am guessing you don't have any educated guesses?!
Mr. Bloom, your timeline must be bonkers with all the cuts and transitions in video and audio...while maintaining a congnitive story...WOW...
Funny no one mentions the 'cat dad' t-shirt or how the ending is a cliff hanger.
well I did spend almost 40 minutes telling you if it's worth it or not... :)
@@philipbloom But there was no definitive Philip Bloom's oral conclusion! ;) :D
1. Thank you for the (by far best) review on this camera available anywhere❤️❤️❤️ 2. That said and deservingly thanked, I positively CANNOT comprehend is the absolutely shocking poor dynamic range of this camera and the way it devours and demolishes all highlights into oblivion! It is far worse than many other 360 cameras with far "inferior" smaller sensors. I assume this camera has a manual exposure override or compensation function? Optimistically, -1EV exposure and then pulling the shadows a bit in post should be able to keep the highlights more in-check. But overall (added improvement in sharpness and lower noise that are certainly welcome additions), I find the footage coming out of this camera on ANYTHING that involves sunny sky with white clouds or just about any object that is bright enough, literally unwatchable. I have been looking at footage of the recently released X3 and with the dynamic HDR function activated (despite being a bit overdone and it's tendency to turn some images into overly flat stuff), it just BLOWS OUT OF THE WATER the RS 1-inch as far as pleasing looking footage is concerned. The RS 1-inch does not have an HDR video function and dearly needs it.. that or a firmware that somehow addressed the out-of-control highlights clipping that is disturbing for camera of this price and specs.
My goodness, what a difference that Binaural sound makes. Remarkable.
17:24 track name? Thanks for the review!
you can adjust sharpness in the Insta360 X3 and I have it on low
The best video that explains what this camera is and is not capable of! just wanted to ask is there a reason you shot all your content from the ONE RS in 25fps rather then the 30fps option?
Yes, I shoot everything at 25p. It’s the standard in Europe. I want this footage to cut in my normal camera footage. 30p is a North American frame rate.
Always been a fan. Thank you for your exceptional and hard work. I purchased this camera and love it so far. BUT, I must say, I never usually buy anything that the host recommends, like filters and LUTs. However, I did try out Topaz. Loved it and then I bought the Video AI as well. AMAZING tools for photography and video. I use them in my workflow daily now. Thank you!
Ripper, Philip. 👍
Love the shirt, Philip!
Fantastic review Philip, thank you for this. The latest firmware update lists "Optimized the audio quality when the camera is connected to an external microphone." - I wonder if that fixed some of the audio issues?
Thanks for the comprehensive review. As always, entertaining and informative.
As an on set VFX data wrangler, I currently use the Theta Z1 for HDRI captures with the Authydra plug in. I am looking considering the Insta360 1-inch because of the larger sensor.
Larger sensor, better detailed HDRIs. Do you know if any 3rd party plugins are available or can even work with the Insta360 1-inch?
Cheers Josh. The Z1 also used dual sensors like this one. Whilst the video is 10x better, if you are just taking photos I don’t think you will get better results.
The photos from the Z1 are very good. I saw little difference when shooting raw photos on both. Although I haven’t tried the HDR mode on the insta360 I think it can still shoot raw. You just need to combine them yourself in Lightroom or similar as the insta360 app only outputs a nasty oversharpened jpeg.
It's been 7 months since the release of the great video, any news on the audio quality?
Philip, perhaps you could alter the strapline to something like "One man, Five Cat's, Ten coffee's" - sorry I have been watching your brilliant teaching video's on MZed :-)
Please keep up reviewing everything! All your reviews are absolutely brilliant. Mind sharing which background music you used at 23:10?
I had to stop halfway becuase I was not prepared for this much value on a review video. Instasubbed*. I have a Sony zve10 and want to pick up an action camera for on the go footage and not have to worry too much about capturing the right frames in the moment. Will be jumping on bikes and mopeds.. Would you recommend the new insta360 x3 or the new gopro hero11 as an addition to my current tech.
Thanks for this review. I ordered this camera a few days ago. I skipped the last 2 insta 360 cameras due to the same sensor and for me I think the price will be worth it. What are your thoughts on the lens flare?
So he we are 8 months later and Insta 360 don't appear to have upgraded the audio as yet. Ive recently ordered the camera and Im awaiting delivery but I am dissapointed this will be an issue.
Very well put together indeed! Thanks!
Philip can you do a series of you driving around interesting towns in the UK in your Fiat with the 360 cameras.
No way! I had enough of the driving and filming myself talking here!
I love ur reviews. U got charisma.
Is it worth the money or no? You let me hanging there...Another great review Philip, thanks!
I'd love to see your 360 editing process Philip
I'm torn between the RS 1" and the Theta X specifically for Matterport and Zillow tours. Especially because it appears as if the RS 1" might be in the process of being phased out. Do you have any insight or advice on which to get?
Thx! I'm awaiting delivery, I held off until there was something like this available, shame about the audio...At least I have an H2 ready to go
Just by a small voice recorder with a lavier mic, 1000% better sound and no need for a expensive wireless mic. Just clap and sync in post. I record all my stuff like this now. Even with pro cameras.
Interesting style of review. I love the cats.
Great explanation. Battery life?
I did have a graphic talking about it. It's really good, well over an hour of recording but keep the app disconnected
I am here for the cats. The latest Fw update messed up my cameras( 2 of them) and struggled to downgrade to the previous version for 3 days. The support is a complete joke and to be honest, I don't see myself in the near or distant future buying this or the Rs. Too much headache
32:53 hey Philip. Great review as usual. Where do you find these sticky lens guards for the 1 inch 360 edition? On Insta360 website there are only lens guards for the 360 X cameras and the regular 360 module. Thanks.
Just got mine today. Yes, bitrates are way, WAY too low!!. Also,....they are crushing the image with gobbs and gobbs of extreme noise reduction. Guys...can we PLEASE get some noise back into this image? It's scrubbed so hard that it looks like a water color painting. Yes...give us 175-200 mbps too...for the love of God...please.
Mr. Bloom, may I have an affiliated link to the sticky lens guard mentioned in your video, please?
They aren’t for sale right now bizarrely. I am looking into it.
@@philipbloom Thank you! Please keep me posted as I have a need for those lens guards. Another question, did you put on the lens guard while you were filming the 360 from the front of your car? Thanks a lot!
I can’t decide whether a 360 camera is a tool that would help me improve the quality of my videos or if it just a fun toy.
Thanks Philip
Hmmmm; I bought the X3 last year and I've been blown away by how good and versatile it is for travel. But it's pretty unusable in low light, I put it away at dusk. I also wish I could use the images when fully cropped, but they're not really good enough.
Now I'm off to Japan for 3 months and I'm wondering how much better the 1 inch is in both aspects. I appreciate it's never going to match a mirrorless but I can't quite get my head around how much delta there is between the X3 and the 1 inch.
Any input is appreciated.
Awesome as always!
This camera is a complement to the Insta360 One RS series, but unfortunately it can't be used in water
Erm yes, I said it isn’t waterproof in the review. It also works with the One R system.
Amidst all the videos flooding RUclips whenever a new product hits the market, I only trust two sources: Philip Bloom and Gerald Undone.
Hi Phil! I must have watched this video 3 now! It was the video that finally help push me to get the camera. Working around its limitations, the camera is worth every penny! Great footage from my Japan trip this month! Viewing them makes the trip memorable! Now I got the idea of Topaz upscaler from this video also! Finally Black Friday sale convinced me to get a Topaz Video/Photo bundle. Great recommendation. After upscaling the exported 360 footage to 8K 60-fps on Topaz. I notice the file does not play in 360 mode anymore on VLC 3.1! Was there some EXIF metadata that need to be manipulated on the Topaz generated file?? I know this comment comes in 1 year later. Hope you can help! cheers!
Thank you! Do you use Premiere? If so you can bring it in there then export it as 360
The last minutes is kill ME... 😅😅😂
overall quality is ok but without hdr... is problem with shadows. low details in black.
do you have a tutorial about using the insta360 templates?! The sky replace looked great!
it does it for you
@@philipbloom fair, I'll give it a go, thanks for the excellent content! Liked and sub'd 🙌🙌🙌
Love your story telling! So regarding the 360 monster, it appears you have the standard version (not the pro) mounted on your car with the RS 360 one inch. Your affiliate link just opens to the website, so I just want to make sure the standard version works. Cheers!
Excellent video 👏👍------Thank you!
fantastically informative. Cheers.
