  • Here is how to flush out that stop leak from your cooling system and radiator. After using Bar's Stop Leak in my vehicle, it immediately started running hot. I tried flushing it with Prestone Radiator Flush as well as using the vinegar flush method but nothing worked until I used ThoroFlush.
    Symptoms of needing to flush out stop leak:
    Engine overheating after using stop leak
    ThoroFlush is available at this Amazon link and also at most auto parts stores. AutoZone typically keeps it in stock.
    www.quickfixman...
    Also, after using this stuff be sure you do a complete flush of your cooling system. See my flushing video here if you aren't sure how.

    Unfortunately had this exact situation on the same year truck. Bought the truck used with a bypassed heater core. Previous owner used Stop leak on the heater core but it failed. Never flushed out this crap. Used the product and saw some improvement buy this stuff was caked on everywhere. Had to change the radiator and waterpump. Flushed out the engine for 30 minutes and still saw aluminum flakes in the system. Thanks for posting. stop leak has got to be the worst thing you can introduce into you vehicle. Let it leak and get it fixed.

    Actually your procedure is wrong and probably mislead a lot of people. You don't start and run your vehicle for 10-12 minutes, you start and run your vehicle for '10-12 minutes after it reaches operating temperature'. It needs to get to operating temperature to open the thermostat to clean the whole system, otherwise it doesn't go hardly anywhere. And to need to turn heat on so it cleans the heater core.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  6 лет назад +3

      I simply followed the directions on the bottle. I agree with you and understand where you are coming from. The problem is that this stuff can only be in your system for 10-12 minutes before it can cause damage so it would be tough to wait for it to get to temperature and then put this stuff in. Maybe removing the thermostat would have helped but I achieved the exact results I needed from using this stuff.

    • @elkbow
      @elkbow 6 лет назад +2

      @@ClintHolland the instructions do say to leave in 10-12 minutes 'after reaching operating temperature'. I tried this stuff on parts, it isn't as strong as I thought it would be.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  6 лет назад +1

      elkbow I am looking at the instructions right now and they say nothing about letting it get to operating temperature. And they very specifically say not to exceed 12 minutes. It might not be as strong as they say but I certainly wasn't risking that.
      From their website:
      1. Pre-mix 1 pint bottle of Thoro-Flush powder with one gallon of water.
      2. Drain 1 gallon of fluid from a full coolant system.
      3. If vehicle does not have a radiator cap, remove top radiator hose and add mixture through hose.
      4. Pour the mixture into the radiator. DO NOT pour into the overflow tank.
      5. Replace radiator cap or re-attach radiator hose and tighten clamp.
      6. Start vehicle with heater on high and run engine for 10-12 minutes.
      CAUTION: Thoro-Flush is very powerful.
      DO NOT EXCEED 12 minutes, or coolant system damage may occur.
      7. Stop engine and drain entire coolant system.
      8. Flush coolant system with water until the water is clear of red Thoro-Flush

    If you look up the MSDS (just google Thoroflush MSDS and its the first result) the ingredients are basically red dye, Trisodium Phosphate, and baking soda. TSP is used as concrete cleaner, and dissolves silica which is concrete sealer... and radiator stop leak. Sodium Silicate reacts with CO2 to form a glass-like deposit of silica. TSP eats it for lunch. But will also eat the oxide layer on your aluminum engine block, and the aluminum itself, hence the short exposure time. Id do it cold, since the reaction rate on a hot engjne part would probably result in damage, where doing it cold will likely help target etch the silica deposits.
    Or maybe skip the pricey Mcprice price and just get a bottle of TSP from ACE for like 6 bucks? YMMV

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  Год назад +5

      I get what you are saying but you are missing a huge point here. TSP has a ph of 12-14. That ph is so caustic that it will react with aluminum and cause pitting, corrosion and even weaken the aluminum, which you can imagine might be pretty bad for someone with an aluminum block. It also causes rapid formation of hydrogen gas. Not sure about you but having a flammable gas potentially building up with my coolant system doesn't exactly sound like a recipe for success. What you may have missed is that Thoroflush also contains baking soda which has a ph of 9. This combination lowers the ph of the TSP solution so that it doesn't have the same harmful effects on the internals of your engine yes still has some cleaning potential. Someone could easily figure out the correct combination of those ingredients to make it safe but telling my viewers to buy chemicals that they need to mix together in very precise proportions else they may ruin their engine or hurt themselves doesn't sound like the best outcome for me, especially not to save like $15. Thanks for sharing however.

    I'm a little confused. Every review of the Irontite Thoroflush that I've read said to pour it in and run your vehicle for 10 minutes, no more than 12 or it could damage your coolant system. The directions on the bottle say to "start your vehicle with the heater on high and run for 10-12 minutes after vehicle reaches operating temperature." It takes my truck 11 minutes to reach normal operating temperature. That means I would pour it in and run it for at least 20 minutes. I want to do it right without messing it up even more. By the way I used Blue devil pour and go to stop a leak and totally bogged up my radiator. Don't use that product either.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  4 года назад +1

    I have a serious overheating issue going on with my 2010 Dodge Charger RT. I just put a brand new radiator, thermostat, and radiator cap on the car, I put a brand new water pump on the car last year. And it's still overheats the only part of the cooling system I have not replaced is the heater core. When I turn on the heat to the hottest heat setting, on the highest fan speed the heat will come out hot but only for a few minutes as it starts to cool off on its own and it will blow cold air instead of heat I am not sure what is going on. I noticed that the lower radiator hose does not get hot. I've use bars stop leak on the car before and I've noticed that it has lumps and clumps of buildup in it and I am not sure if one of those lumps is blocking the flow of my coolant guess what I'm thinking but I am not exactly sure I am going to try the stuff you use and see if it fix my problem I hope that it does because I I have done everything I can to try to fix it if you have any advice I would love to hear I'm curious to know why my lower radiator hose does not get hot but the other hoses get hot? Thanks

      So if you used any stop leak ... I can 100% guarantee this crap clogged the coolant holes in your engine block ... Two questions please.
    I just added bars leak a couple weeks ago. I have not had any problems and it seems to have stopped the leak. However I am concerned that it may cause future issues and want to remove any deposits. Does this replace the step of using another radiator flush product?
    after doing this procedure can you instead use a product that is guaranteed not to harm your engine and radiator - bearsleak 🐻??

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  5 лет назад +2

      There is a good chance it will cause future issues but there is also a chance that flushing it will undo whatever was wrong. Before you flush it, you need to make sure you have had whatever caused the leak fixed. Once you do that, you can then flush it. And this is the only thing you will need to do to flush it. You don't need to use any other flush product but this one. I know Bars and other brands promise that they won't cause harm, but they are wrong. If you don't believe me, just do some searches on the Internet and you will find plenty of people with problems after using one of them.

The stop leak slowed it but never fixed it.After all of this and replacing the heater core the truck always ran hotter than normal and would even overheat during the summer. Thanks, Since My Comment The Barrs Leak Fix Failed plus added Overheating. . I have resolved the Problem. After Flushing Barrs Garbage , the Cooling Sys didn't cool fully. To fix the Prob of Overheating , I had the Remove the Radiator and wash out the Fiber Clog caused by Barrs Leak. Most Importantly I have discovered a Product on the Shelf at WMT located beside Barrs Leak called "K-Seal". It is amazing !!!!!! Fixed the Intake Leak and didn't clog the Rad.. On top of that , it is only 8 Oz. Time will tell , but so far no Coolant loss caused by the former Intake Leak.

      Going on several Weeks now , The K-Seal is the TRICK !!!......As a reminder , for those in a Mess with Barrs Leak , You prob need to remove the Rad and back Flush it to get out the Fuzzy Stuff Out. No Chem will do it. That Fuzz will get caught in the Tiny Openings in the Inlet Side and only a Backward Wash will get It out. To Prove My Point use a Fine Mesh Strainer to Test what comes out of the Rad. It will help You to assess if You got it All removed.

      Does it work? Absolutely. 6 bottles however. I make no promises about that. Maybe try this along with a water flush that you see in one of my other videos.

      I want to agree with you and this stuff truly is evil but man did it save my butt once. It took a lot of effort to clean it out but I would have had a ruined vacation without this stuff.

    Bars stop leak must be the brain child of an automotive engineer. Everything they come up with makes a mechanics life miserable. I would like to see one of them replace a heater core!

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  6 лет назад +2

      Amen. Couldn't have said it better myself. Just like the guys who design engines and cars never plan on someone having to actually work on them.

      Replacing a 4runner heater core is more difficult than replacing an engine.

    Never use any kind of chemicals to prevent or try and help/fix a problem. No real mechanic would ever tell you to do it. Only amateurs and green horn house wives use shit like that

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  5 лет назад +1

      Agreed. However, this stuff is used by a lot of actual mechanics and is way better than the alternative of having an overheating car or having any stop leak in your vehicle.

    Never add this shit to your car. I added a powder and it fked up my entire cooling system including A/C matrix. Terrible stuff just get your car fixed it will save you thousands in the long run

      Please do the internet a favor and before you choose to troll someone else do some research. The active ingredient in this flush is TSP. Yep, that's right TSP. The same ingredient in literally a 100 different household cleaners. It is considered so safe that the FDA says you can consume up to 70 grams per day, every day of your life without adverse side effects. Thanks for watching though. I appreciate it.

      Wow. So the answer is no. This is water based and would not go well in your power steering pump.
