took several years before I met a teacher that taught me as you teac. my tone changed dramatically!! now if I can develop improvisational skills. thanks for being around 😊.
I am a hobby sax player and blooming proud. Love your lessons Jamie, keep making them. What helps me is thinking about how you want that piece of music to sound, and have that in your mind as you are playing. How you want your vibrato to sound, have a mental picture. My teacher told me that.
Jamie, thank you again for the continued insights into improving the basic tenets of this instrument, the sax A phon (short a sound please). I've found that watching myself in a mirror helps me focus on relaxing the shoulders and opening up the neck to get better airflow. Break a leg, sir!
I love your way of teaching. I believe this lesson will help me immensely and will cement good learning techniques. I started to learn in April. I really appreciate what you do
Hello! For fail #2, how could I resolve this for quieter notes? The solution/practice/demonstration you provided was just you blowing has loud as you can.
Thanks Jamie. I try to work on all of those. My three biggest faiils (for what it's worth) as a beginner in the practise room: - having no clear idea what I want to practise each session - not using a metronome, or setting it way too fast - not being self-critical enough about tone and articulation when practising at very slow metronome speeds. I try to bunch up my lower lip cushion as much as possible, and seeking some support with the teeth, without folding over them. The frustrating part is that the tiniest of adjustments can make that sweet spot a hit or miss. Another honorable mention: (which I suffer from:) the actual amount of mouthpiece I take in. Too little, and I'm choking the reed. Too much, and I have no tonal control whatsoever.
Actually, the higher I go .... the looser my lips seem to be as I have learned to voice it like you said.... so, I completely stopped biting.. thank you so much.
So, just curious, ever since i started playing saxophone (tenor) a long time ago i played it with my lower lip curled in quite a bit. Automatically i started playing with a lot of subtoning, which i didn't mind since i like playing jazz and i liked the dark and fluffy sound i could make! It made me think of saxophonists like Ben Webster, and i really like that type of playing! In later years, my newer teacher has been trying to guide me to play with a more open sound, although it feels incredibly uncomfortable to play like that and i have much less control, especially in the lower register (lower notes). The question is, is it possible to have your own type of embouchure even though it is considered incorrect or should i just keep trying to get rid of it? Trying to get a more "correct" embouchure? Edit: I also adore Stan Getz, and he too has quite a bit of lower lip curled inwards! But oh that sound!
I love your channel..tip 4…I’m not patient 😂😂 because I’ve played the organ since I was 4 I play a tune on that immediately and then expect to be able to accompany myself on my sax when I’ve only been learning that for 2 years 😂😂😂😂
im lost, do you use your bottom teeth to hold the reed? or does only your top teeth bite down and as you hold the sax your pushing it up against the top teeth 🤔
my RUclips channel features me playing, rather than teaching although I could do that too since I played for 51 years. And I will say that: you use the term hobby saxophonist and I think going forward, given the lack of money making opportunities actually playing music, all of us are sort of hobby players. By that I mean we are self benefactors and that we need another income stream outside of music, for some people that will be teaching whether it's in person or on RUclips or whatever, but for many, I think it should be whatever they were going to do if they did not play saxophone, it took me years to figure that out many years ago of course, but for me, that was being a lawyer.
Fail... not brushing teeth before playing, and drinking pop, soda, coke, coffee, sports drinks, Gatorade, milk, beer. "Only drink water when playing sax!!!!
fail....letting sax hang on neck strap ring without any support then neck strap cord breaks, expensive saxophone slams to the cement!!!! Always hold sax, at least one hand on keys, at all times,
Hi Jamie, I watch your videos from time to time. I love your enthusiasm. However, coming from across the pond, Canada, I must say that calling aspiring saxophonists, “hobby” saxophonists doesn’t sit right with me. Many of us have been playing for many years, even playing professionally and to be called a “hobby” sax player sounds demeaning. I’m sure you don’t intend it to sound that way, but that is my gut reaction. Take care and thanks for all you do.
I think that this video was made for the "hobby" players actually. I am a hobby player trying to improve, so i should know 😢. He even says it "when you start out as a hobby player"
One of most hobby self taught players wrongly made and overused feature is bending notes... stop doing it!! You don't need to bend every second note! The problem is it gives the player a self sense of coolness. IT IS NOT COOL at all
Best sax teacher on RUclips 👏
Agreed 👍
Yep
Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for sharing, God bless you.

Not the deadly "bleeting goat vibrato" 😂 TEACH, I ❤ this RUclips video. Thank you again for being an inspiration.
You are so welcome!

Thank you!
#4! -- patient, plodding progress -- difficult but important key!
You got this Rob. Stick at it! 👍🏻
Hi jamie many thanks for your videos I have a 2 stars tenor mouth piece could u tell me please what no of reed must I use for it ❤
I’m afraid that depends. That’s a question for my Inner Circle!
Great content! Did I hear a quote of Klosé when you played the "fast" example?
Em, I know it as a brass exercise. Could well be!
Hello! For fail #2, how could I resolve this for quieter notes? The solution/practice/demonstration you provided was just you blowing has loud as you can.
That’s a bit of a long answer I’m afraid. RUclips is always a bit limiting for the big answers.
Boy oh boy, I knew I’d be guilty of the first esp!! lol! Thank you, Jamie - you’re TOPS!!!Cheers🎉
You're welcome
I love your laughs and appreciate your dedication to us hobby players 😂.
My pleasure!
@@markusguler7079 this a beautiful hobby that we can grow and who knows - you might experience success.

If it sounds the way you want that’s all that matters.

Ur face was turning a little red there LOL 😂
Yeah it always does that!
Thank you J! 🥰
You're welcome!
Like you said... an hour a day everyday.. really improved over the last month
That's great
fail... Ramming ligature into the reed, spliting the reed.
Be careful, put ligature on first and slip reed under the ligature (slightly pulled out).
👍🏻
Bad.
I love ur videos Jamie
Glad you enjoy them

It’s the highest notes, the palm key notes, that are most sensitive to bite pressure, therefore most susceptible to the bwohs.
Indeed.

I play again, and again and again and i am paciente, but i guess i repeat my mistakes every day.
