What happened is that when the exercise is to transpose down you first count it down to get the exact interval number (like 6th, 3rd etc) and only after that you analyse if it is major or minor interval. To do that you need to focus on the bottom note as the new key and compare with the top. In case this distance is minor and you want to get a major interval than you have to adjust again the new key you just found to make sure it’s interval comparing to the top is still major. (Eg. D to Ab is a minor but Db to Ab is a major) you cannot change the top not as this was your reference so you need to change the bottom. I hope it helps and did not complicated it even more 🙈
