- SOUTH is a meditative documentary by Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman (1950-2015). Released in 1999, the film addresses the dragging murder of James Byrd Jr. at the hands of three white supremacists. Patrick just finished watching it and talks about why it's such a subtly powerful film.

Will watch this. I really loved another one from her called From the East -- which is similar in treatment: restrained, patient. Informed by her work, and others with similar patience, bravery, and tenderness, I took an ambitious road trip across the US in 2015. The project, passing grounds (short version: vimeo.com/290422688), was the result of a 10-ish week road trip that exclusively took me to sites of murder at the hands of law enforcement in 2014. It's a kind of pilgrimage that I intend to repeat in a few years. Check it out if you get a chance, you may appreciate it, or not -- as it's been unprogrammable. Otherwise, great to see this critique! Long live the long take!
Yoooo. Need to watch From the East. Recently read about it. South was exactly the movie I needed to see a couple days ago. Snapped me out of a fog. Will check out your film. I understand the unprogrammable life for sure. Lol. And yes, long live the long take 🤘🏽
