l like DC Books, but when I get one in my collection that doesn't fit, they're SO much harder to move. I have a showcase 7, beautiful book, cover is glossy, pages are supple - it still makes that little wiggly noise, couple spine tics, small crease bottom corner. Super nice. But selling it is like looking for a unicorn buyer. Unless it's Batman it just sits.

Man am I glad you do talk about DC. I am slowly delving into the company and I would love to see you talk about the Spectre, Deadman, Swamp Thing, etc.

THE TRUE FIRST OF SILVER AGE WAS DETECTIVE COMICS WITH JOHN JONES MARTIAN MANHUNTER. IT HAD A HUGE AMOUNT OF FAN MAIL. AS TOLD BY MR.BILL FINGER IT INCREASED DETECTIVE COMICS.

Love all those books. And in lucky enough to own 3 mentioned. Nothing in the top 5. :( but all grail books in my opinion. Good job on this list. And aquaman #1 is such a undervalued book in my opinion.

  • @Utubesanarc

Didn't Starro on that Justice League kill Aquaman at some time? Maybe someday you can touch on the ignored line of hereos from Archie Comics. The Shield, the Fly, Jaguar, and the Comet who formed the Crusaders back in the day. Would make an interesting video.

You didn't mention the Helen Slater Supergirl film. It looks like the new Supergirl film is soon to be cancelled like they've cancelled Batgirl. I thankfully bought the Action #252 recently for $500 from a very good friend!

DC didn't put the issue # on the cover of JLA #1 in 1960 so they wouldn't scare the distributor from handling it! Yeah---different times!!

Zod is definitely in the top 5. Some of t he others (Toyman, Puzzler, Mr. Mxyzpylk) are pretty silly. As a kid in the 70s, they really forced Terra-Man down our throats. Bizarro and Parasite are contenders for #4.

Hi, Jim. Surprised that you only own 1 of these as I know you're a solid DC fan. I would have thought you'd acquired some of them during the 80s or so. Very informative, sir!

A few extra points to throw in after watching your video.
    - Matt Reeves did an interview after the release of The Batman where he confessed to having an idea for a "grounded" portrayal of Mr. Freeze that he wants to do in a future film. He did not specify if this would be part of The Batman II or another sequel in the future. To your point, comic writer Tony Isabella just sold his personal copy of Batman # 121 on social media back in June for $1,000, and that was for an estimated grade of 2.0.
    - The Legion of Super-Heroes didn't just take Superboy's place as the lead feature in Adventure Comics, but actually took over Superboy's solo title entirely with issue # 259 in 1980. For 7 years prior to that (starting with issue # 197), Superboy shared top billing of his own series with them (Superboy, Starring the Legion of Super-Heroes).
    - There is actually a very good article written by Will Murray in the most recent issue of Jack Kirby Collector that makes the case for The Challengers of the Unknown being the real inspiration for the creation of the Fantastic Four. It was an immediate sales hit at the time (COTU debuted in Showcase after SA Flash, but got their own solo series before Flash), it's popularity spawned numerous other adventure-team concept books at DC (Sea Devils, Suicide Squad, Metal Men), Jack Kirby was the creator of the Challs and brought many of their creative similarities to the FF (a team of big science adventures in matching uniforms whose origins are tied to a crash), and no one besides Stan Lee himself has ever corroborated the story of Martin Goodman wanting him to do a JLA-like book. Stan was well know for making stuff up that sounded good (saying JLA was the starting point for the FF sounds better than saying it was COTU, especially as the years went on), plus it's been proven that Goodman didn't play golf with Jack Liebowitz, so how would he have known the JLA sales figures? It's more likely that Goodman learned that COTU was a hit because Kirby told him, he could likewise see all the Challs-like books on the shelves that were spurred by it's out-of-the-gate success, and told everyone involved to do a book like Challengers only better. And that's what we got.

I feel like now is the best time to get into DC Keys. They're chump change compared to the marvel books. Are you going to grab any of the books you mentioned? I would love that brave and the bold or the green lantern and flash showcase.

Hi Jim, very interesting, I'm missing three out of that list. Impossible to find up here in Canada, but the fun is in the hunt. How about g.i. combat comics, either from DC or quality comics. I collect a lot of the fifties war comics . I have sea devils #1 raw vf+ . I bought that one in 1969. Awesome vid thank you for sharing
