Post training or Zhan Zhuang, is a standing practice that uses gravity, relaxation, and coordination to achieve a stretch of the fascia network in your body. The post training stretch is different than a typical passive stretch. Passive stretching is bending a joint past a certain angle and holding it. We are all taught this kind of stretch, that's not it. Post training stretch is slowly building the coordination to "sink" or pull the fascia network downwards to build structure/root. For beginners, a major component of the stretch is the fascia around the spine. You have to build the coordination where your spine can stretch downwards. What is coordination? Is just your brain sending signals to your body to do a certain task. For muscles, we can flex/contract at will. You can stand and not move, but can flex your muscles at will. Post training is the opposite of contraction. It's expansion (stretch). You have to build the coordination to stretch your body downwards while turning off as much muscle as possible. Why is the fascia important in the internal arts? For beginners, it allows you to shift the pressure from your muscles to the fascia allowing you to absorb more incoming force. It also allows you to be more explosive and acquire short power due to the body being more relaxed and rooted. Important note: Do not neglect your muscles and other aspects of hard style training and hard style fighting techniques. There's a reason we see Tai Chi masters get destroyed. Internal arts is just an attribute that can share some of the burden of training martial arts as you age.
