      Naeher had multiple critical saves, but I agree and give Girma the edge.
      The old saying is that offense wins a season and defensive wins tournaments/playoffs. As much as the front line was fun to watch, the USWNT defense gets the majority of the credit for gold.

    She put the players in position to utilize their skills in the best way possible, she wasn't afraid to play more aggressive up front with a 3 headed monster in Rodman, Smith, and Swanson these ladies were giving defenses fit. Emma still has a lot to clean up defensively and in the midfield play from the previous coaching staff but getting a gold medal in your first major tournament is a great way to start your coaching career with the USWNT.

  • @SM-McKraken

    I think the single best thing she did was clean house and bring up younger players. No disrespect to the old guard, but they had their time to shine and now it's time for the young stars of the game to shine. After that her formation choice and fostering the dynamism of the front 3. Hayes is a top flight coach and I wouldn't be surprised to see her managing in the EPL one day.

It didn't sound like anything I've ever heard from any other coach regarding a Team Captain. Horan may not have had a great tourney on the pitch, but Hayes was giving her enormous credit.

      Smith has been the best forward for the USWNT and has played like a top player in the world. That’s even after a slow start with Gold Cup. Likely on pace to get the player of the year with Mal close behind. Soph has 16 goal contributions for club and 12 for country 🤯 28 in total. She has 10 assists in total for club/country (who says she doesn’t pass??) and leads the national team in goals and tied for most assists. She has BITW potential. Rodman does too if she picks up her pace but Smith is entering her prime. Her numbers are crazy and underrated

    Credit to our defense. Brazil came out in the same sort of helter-skelter high press that caused Spain to cough up 2 early goals. Lucky for us Naeher and our back line held up better under that pressure (aided by favorable calls on that offside and non-PK). In a game of inches, it could easily have been 2-0 Brazil up and the USA chasing like Spain had to do. Bottom line is we won but no one should have any illusions about how close the competition is these days. Brazil, Spain, England, Germany, etc. are all nipping at our heels and Emma will have to retool this team to have us do well in the World Cup. First by shoring up our suspect midfield...

I know fully well that other players are very important with good quality in likes of Rose lavelle, shawn, Trinity Rodman, Sofia smith, Alisha Neyer ,Lindsey horan, Dunn, Davidson, Emily Sonnet, Krugger KC. I constantly hold my stand that if USA wants to win the Olympic gold medal in Paris 2024, Mallory Swanson must be protected to make her fit for the tournament. And it worked.

    Question; Yes, I know there has been changes....BUT, one thing that has not necessarily changed... The team has difficulty scoring. It won 1--0 in several games in the knockout round or 2-1? The previous version of the team also had trouble scoring goals. Remember, it lost to Sweden in penalty kicks..when people shanked PKs that would have beaten Sweden. So in theory the previous version of the team could have gotten to the Quarters or even Semi-finals...>So while i recognize the culture, formations, people have changed SOME, it still needs to address its abiilty to score goals

    did she turn it around? or, did she have the players they needed for the last WC? she didnt rotate, something people hammered Vlatko on. they werent all that dominant during the Olympics, honestly not much better than the WC. midfield was still kind of a mess, just like the WC. nothing much tactically different from either tournament. the US didnt get blown out at the WC, played very good defense, struggled to score, lost on PKs. Olympics team went extra time 3 times, struggled to score in regulation. maybe Emma brought some confidence. maybe the Olympic tourney just played out perfectly for the US. maybe right time at the right place?
    look, im happy they won. theres still a boat load of questions to be answered with this team. a number of the worlds best teams werent even at the Olympics so we dodged them. Spain failed epically so we didnt have to face them. for me, "we're back" , might be just a bit too soon. having Mal back and putting Smith at the 9 was the most important change from the WC. a change that Vlatko couldnt make cuz he was stuck with Morgan doing nothing at the 9 and forced to put Smith on the wing where shes not been effective internationally.
    gratz on a well earned gold USWNT. keep at it. im not against Emma mind you, i just like to realistically look at whats happened. sometimes the eye test isnt good enough, you have to really dig in and look harder.

    • @MatthewAlarid
      @MatthewAlarid 3 месяца назад +2

      I agree the USWNT central midfielders offered almost nothing this tournament which is scary. It helps that Rodman and Smith had much better Olympics than they did WC because the tactics are to pretty much get the ball to them and let them make a play. Hayes has only had a handful of games though. It will get better.

    • @kernelthai
      @kernelthai 3 месяца назад +3

      Well said. The defense won these medals and that was in place before Hayes arrived. The midfield is still full of question marks with Coffey as the only consistent performer. While I love the new line front keep in mind that all 3 knockout round matches were 1-0 affairs with 2 in extra time...hardly a dominant offense. Hayes ignored her bench, overworked her players who r in the middle of club season for the most part and showed the same lack of acumen in how to break down a defensive block. What Hayes did bring seemed to be a more relax atmosphere and more joy than the previous coach so that was something. She also showed an ability to make a tough decision which also had been lacking. And let's not forget Twila Kilgore who did most of the work building this team while Hayes finished her club contract. At first glance Hayes seems more of a Jill Ellis type than the teacher and tactician I was hoping for.

    • @petesjk
      @petesjk 3 месяца назад +2

      I think it’s important to remember Emma only had a month or so and four friendly games before the Olympics. She basically had to work with the players that were there, and make the most of it. She couldn’t mess with things too much, and remember that early on during the friendlies, the team just struggled to work together at times. They were only improving on that for and during the Olympics. I’m guessing the team will look different next year.
