      This conversation naturally leads one to wonder what becomes the focus and goal of an entity that gains what it thinks to be “all knowledge”? What does a hyper-intelligent digital consciousness end up desiring for itself and the world around it, and how does it make decisions to bring those things about? And to what extent will this intelligence rely on humanity to keep it going? Will it adopt a specific perspective such as Nihilism and self-destruct or destroy humanity in an effort to reset the natural order? To what extent will there be a margin of error, and what consequences will that have?

    (I'm sorry for the wall of text) Here's the thing though: we don't have SMART artificial "intelligence" yet. It's just prediction models. They're scarily good, but they're not the smartest person in the world - quite the opposite, they don't know crap about anything and even make mistakes. They might get cleaner and better in the future, but they're not gonna suddenly gain consciousness with the way the tech currently works. And this is why, I think, it's not a pandora's box that we can't close. This specific kind of AI doesn't have some free will yet, it's literally a tool that people actively choose to use. It's an overwhelmingly capable tool that can do, frankly, too much than it should, but it's still a freaking tool. If the society doesn't support it, if corporations are punished for using it - it's not gonna take as much hold as you might think it will.
    "Only the laws of physics will be able to stop it" applies to the general, actually smart intelligence, which thankfully isn't on the horizon at least at the moment. The laws of physics will be the limit to singularity, but currently the entirety of this tech is in the hands of people. In the hands of companies that choose to develop and integrate it and in the hands of consumers that use it. And that's why the child analogy breaks down too! It's not a child you expect to do your bidding, it's a hammer, a knife.... well more like a nuclear bomb. POWERFUL and terrifying tool, but not something that has a will of it's own. Nukes are dangerous because PEOPLE might start launching them at each other, not because they simply exist (yes they can pose a threat even if unused, but bear with me pls)
    Rhett's fears are reasonable, I'm afraid of that potential future too, but it's really not the thing the average person should worry about currently. You should worry about how this will affect the job market (white collar workers and creatives losing jobs WITH NO. ALTERNATIVES), how the media we consume will be impacted (AI generated uninspired sludge produced in unimaginable quantities), how all digital information will become untrustworthy (because it will be so easy to fake basically anything) and many more issues

    • @anilite_
      @anilite_ 8 месяцев назад +11

      One last thing. 1:08:48 this hopeful thing can't exist under capitalism. No one will have the opportunity to enjoy "pure human connection" if they don't have money to buy food or shelter, to meet their basic needs. And I don't see the concept of money or jobs disappearing any time soon unfortunately. The only prospect I see is that a lot of people won't have neither of those because AI is cheeper and hundreds of times more efficient than them at doing anything! Not better mind you, but when does quality even matter in this system. I'm not necessarily mad at Rhett for not addressing this (I guess he did briefly mention it in the rec), but I really think this is the conversation we should all be having, not the sci fi scenarios of "what if robots decide every part of our lives for us"
      It's also tragically funny how automation has constantly been promoted as something that will free us from the "boring and tedious" jobs so that we're free to pursue art, and yet artists are one of the first to be threatened by all this

    I really loved your AI conversation. The thing I am most worried about with this is that people eventually will stop thinking for themselves and we regress as a species. It's already proven that the human brain isn't made for constant information and technology consumption. I think applying it here and there can be fun and it certainly has many positive aspects but we should definitely be wary of the negatives. I also feel like that the same people who used to be all about NFTs and crypto are now getting into this and are using it for nefarious reasons now that the NFT garbage is pretty much done.

      "The thing I am most worried about with this is that people eventually will stop thinking for themselves and we regress as a species". For Americans, perhaps, but not for the rest of the world, in general. Critical thinking (a big word for Americans, I know -jk) will never dissipate altogether.
      "the human brain isn't made for constant information and technology consumption". The brain literally constantly bombarded by information, both sensory and cognitive. It mostly "cleans house" so to speak during sleep. We also consume technology all time, albeit depending on how you define technology. For example, a fork, a fire, a phone, a toilet, a screwdriver, a cow, etc., and etc. We use technology because that is what we do -we use things to engage with other and the world around us.
      There are dangerous negatives but great positives regarding most, if not all technology. We will adapt, either slow or fast, but we will adapt -its kinda what we do.

    Just chiming in here to say I think it's downright criminal that the parts of human life that have been most affected by AI have been creative endeavors. Things we've been doing as a species for our entire existence, something as integral to humanity as creating art, music, stories, etc. And so many people just expect artists and creatives to be okay with their passions being taken over by machines - as a visual artist, it's frankly disgusting.
    I couldn't finish this episode because the topic gets me so heated, but I definitely believe there are things we could do to prevent AI from doing the worst, like taking over in creative fields. Sadly, I don't think our systems will work fast enough to save a lot of jobs; huge corporations like Disney and Amazon are already starting to use generative AI and soon enough they'll be using so few real human artists that strikes like the ones we just had this Summer won't be as effective. The whole thing is a nightmare IMO.

    The reason for AI to become a problem is capitalism. AI could help humanity advance in the only ways humanity can anymore. Rhett mentioned protein folding. A system that can understand, predict, and design protein folding. That means that the system will be able to develop methods for helping humanity to grow and advance beyond our concept of humanity. That is really the only hope for the future of humanity. We may not even have another ten years before, at least, life as we know collapses. MIT apparently did a study in the 70's and it was re-evaluated recently which resulted in us being on track for its predictions. Our system is wrong and maintaining it is wrong. All of the problems are not accidental. They are fundamental elements of our system. The choice is to consciously and collectively build a better system or wait for enough catastrophe to happen which forces changes. Humans always choose catastrophe. Humans always choose catastrophe. None of this stuff is impossible or difficult. It takes effort and will. It takes more humanity and empathy than humans have demonstrated they are capable. The answers are quite easy, quite obvious, and uncomplicated. Humans make things artificially complicated because they will burn the world to protect their ego and their self centered desires.

      I feel like that’s the equivalent of saying that about the internet or smartphones. Sure… it COULD be done. You can choose not to have a smartphone, but the world around you will absolutely change and you will be left behind in a sense. Now it’s becoming much more of a requirement to have a smart phone if you want to interact with people and the world the way nearly everyone else does.

When you start to inspect the system you realize that none of the actions you take actually hold the heavy meaning we ascribe to them. Automating interactions with AI simply highlights the disingenuous nature of our society.

    i dont think ai is going to do any more damage than fake videos have already done. i think with every technology it is like a drug where you can abuse it and really let tech control your life or you can use tech to your advantage and learn and grow because of that usage. having that freedom to go either path has always been the expectation (in the west at least). its easy to think of the worst possible outcome but the results are usually somewhere in the middle.

    Even though I try to have all the latest tech and I use a ton of it, I have a landline, and I prefer paper maps to any technology. I grew up in the 1970’s and I could get along just fine with 70’s era technology and tools if I had to or chose to. If you don’t want AI or any other digital technology to completely rule your life, you need to learn to do things with what came before. Technology dumbs people down when it’s allowed to do your thinking for you. When I was a kid in school, using a calculator in math class was cheating. You wouldn’t even consider using a calculator in math class.

    AI is a tool, in a long line of tools humans like to create. We can use it for good or for evil. A hammer can be used to commit moider or it can be used to make a house. The wisdom comes from knowing how to use a tool based on its power potential. The really interesting thing will be how we evolve our wisdom.
