    In 1972, U.S. Congress passed Title IX, a law which prohibited discrimination against women in schools, colleges, and universities -- including school-sponsored sports. Before this law, female athletes were few and far between, and funding was even scarcer. Erin Buzuvis and Kristine Newhall explore the significance and complexity of Title IX.

    I am all for equality, which is why I need to mention that part of this law creates inequality; namely proportionality. The quotas mandated by this rule do not take into account student-athletes' interest and abilities. As a NCAA Div I Track & Field athlete (a sport that enjoys close ties between its male and female teams) I saw men with great talent and passion turned away while not so competitive women reluctantly stayed on because they were given scholarships. -I am out of room for this post.

    The thing is that regardless of amount of girls that want to partake in ex. tennis all the girls should get opportunity. Even if you hate soccer wouldn't it make you insane to know that you are not allowed to play?
    I would love if more boys were into cheerleading. The law gets them the equal opportunity.
    What i think you don't understand is that the law doesn't force schools to reduce the amount of boys playing, it forces schools to give a girls team the same money the boys team get.

    I am a Kinesiology teacher, coach and have a master's degree. I have spent my whole life in sports, first as an athlete in high school and then college and now as a teacher and coach. I have a working knowledge (practical application) on Title IX and gender equality...but don't claim to be an expert. We can always learn more!
    This video is a general explanation of Title IX. Many negative comments posted I believe are due to not fully understanding the law and how it is suppose to be enforced on high school and college campuses. It is not always exact numbers at every school but providing opportunities for girls to play sports if they so choose. It increases opportunities to play sports AND get scholarships to play in college. I am a product of Title IX! I grew up thinking I could play any sport I wanted and it was normal. I received a scholarship to run in college as well. My mother was the generation that did not have those same opportunities. It was not a norm to see girls and women play which my mother shared was a missed opportunity for her.
    The only loss to boys sports (usually at the college level) was mostly and the beginning and due to the lack of the university to support and put money into women's sports. It forced them to really take a look at their athletic program and see where gender biases were happening. That's a GOOD thing, even if it cost them in the beginning. However, today most universities and schools have only know Title IX and follow the regulations without any problems. If your school is losing male sports...something is wrong.
    Sidenote: to the comments regarding unfairness at your school. Yes, you should speak up! Some sports teams will do fundraisers and have donations to their booster clubs. This does not affect Title IX. If they hustle, they deserve the money. However, each school has an allotted "pot" for all athletics where they are to provide uniforms, equipment, etc. fairly between all teams, both boys and girls. Of course, there is always a budget and some years they have more than others to spread...because it comes from the state.
    And yes, girls play on our football team and we have male cheerleaders....

    The thing I don't get is that we can't have a sports team officially tied to the school unless there are women interested in the game. I get that there needs to be a team for the girls so they can play on a fair level with other girls. Lacrosse, for example, doesn't have a huge interest level for girls at my high school. And because of that, there is no way that we can even get it part of the school. It's not discriminating against women and barring them from playing the sport, and it's simply just not popular among girls and that completely destroys the whole reason to increase school spirit.

    I’m a male and I can’t join my dance team bc it’s a “girl sport”. This law is only one sided. So women can join men’s team (even if there’s women’s) but if there’s no men’s team then men can’t join women’s. Now that’s sexist the world is changing and people need to realize that you can’t limit students participation in sport bc of gender.

      Well considering Men, and Women are built different because Males are born with Testosterone so that means if Males compete in sports designed for biological women that means that would take away college scholarships from Women cause they are being taken away from biological Women. For example Women's Wrestling is made for biological women so if you have a Biological born man saying he is a Women that would give him a unfair advantage, and he would take away scholarships from women. I like Women's sports, women's track is huge at my school, so I would like to preserve the fairness of it. Stop trying to take away scholarships from Women, and let them have an equal playing field. If you actually you watched or cared about sports you would know why we need segregation. ruclips.net/video/-ym42lV1ka8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/iJe82yniZQo/видео.html

    When you seek equality for it's own sake, then, like this, you play the system as if it's a zero sum game and everyone loses. The failure, in something like this, could be traced directly to the easiest to meet performance indicator. And with no 'investment floor' (the dramatic fall in male participation) the law can easily be seen as a failure.

    Would you care to tell me why we don't apply this same approach to battery shelter/support groups?
    In the US, about 40-50% of funding for womens battery shelters is given by federal government. The same can't be said for men. In addition to that, some of previously mentioned shelters will not allow any men (sometimes not even allowing boys over the age of 16)
    Keep in mind as well, domestic violence closely affected by both sexes (about 40/60). So, why aren't we applying the same rules there?

The boys basketball team was allowed to come into their locker rooms and wait. There’s three of my friends who almost got detention for being in the locker rooms. Is this something I should help one of my friends write a letter to the front office about? Leave suggestions and advice in the comments. It’s very much needed.

    This is an inevitable outcome when a government tries to enforce something, that is an opportunity, chance and choice relevant.
    - Because not all people are grown with sports in focus:
    as you pointed out men tend to be more active in this regard.
    - Not all people have the physique to perform well in sports: not that they shouldn't try, just some people have no genetic predisposition for professional sports career and that is just nature - no laws can fix it.
    - Not all people want to be athletes.

    I guess the difference is how we interpret equal opportunity. Your system works if an equal number of both boys and girls want to take part. However that is not the case, and that is a reality that must be addressed. As I said, this is the same as reducing the number of girls in cheer-leading because there's too many compared to the number of boys. Another issue not addressed is that male sport events bring in far more revenue, on average. Reducing these teams therefore hurts the schools.

    Some of this is flawed. I'm not a sports expert, but things like new uniforms and equipment don't always come from school funds. Sometimes the teams will fund themselves.
    Therefore it's fallible to assume that if one team is getting new things it's unfair. It's a question on the source of their funds (i.e. if schools give to one team, other teams should receive relatively the same, but if parents/players of a team fund themselves, they should not and do not have to pay other teams as well.)

    I don't think number should play a huge role in equality for sports, especially as a quota. I think here, quality is more important to focus on than quantity. If no girls are interested in tennis, then then no girls like tennis and the school shouldn't be punished for that. But I agree that girls should have the same quality of time in sports. If girls like basketball, then they must receive similar equipment and play time. But having to hit a quota just sucks.

Positive discrimination is just as problematic as negative discrimination for some. Sport, employment and everything else should be genderless. In sport, there should be mixed team, completely decided by the level of skill alone. :)

I read a story about a trans-men who competed in wrestling in the female league and he dominated there but when made the transition to the male league he said that with women he could undo their grip fast but with men it feels like a steal chain he can't break with his own hands. Why because men and women are not the same and we all know it that is why no one cares about female sports because we all know the level in men sports is superior.

    Equality of opportunity is important, but a 50-50 ratio of male and female participants does not indicate equality. If there is twice as much interest in basketball from boys than there is for girls, a larger amount of effort should be dedicated to boys. Likewise if there is more interest from girls in a sport, more effort and funding should go towards that.

Your program should pay for it own needs. The boys team will fill the stadium and the girls team can't fill it halfway even when they give away 1500 tickets. They get to use the same faculties and support staff but the coaches and equipment are paid for by the men's team. Travel expenses are paid for by the men's team. The women's athletic scholarship programs are funded by the mens football team. Why do women get to steal from mens programs and it's called equal.

    Tough subject. But men are generally more into sports than women. Men also play at the highest level thus making it more interesting to watch the best teams. So following marketing efficiency, men that participate on the highest level will always get more.
    If women were beating men on that sport, they should get more and better equipment and support.
    But on an amateur level I agree it should be equal depending on the amount of participants.

    Yup, I know theory...
    According to WHO sex is something biological and gender a social construct to identify us as "male" or "female"
    However, in practice any time I hear about "gender" it's usually about "women" (and once in a while LGBT's). The main problem with some feminists confuse those men who in the past treated and in Middle East treat women like shyte with respectful and loving sons, brothers, husbands, and friends.

    Good intentions gone bad. I know athletic girls who have played some sports in the past in high school and later as I went to college. However most just lose interest, not because of sexism or patriarchal society but just they have other things going on. Women have better things to do than be a sports participant in high school and be a sports fanatic the rest of their lives. It's the 40 year old beer belly of a man who played in high school that follows sports like a religion. Sports aside though, title IX has gotten out of control and sooner or later it's going to blow up in everyone face.

    Proportionality is an issue that only increases inequality by encouraging those who do not want to take part of something and taking the funds away form those who are really interested. Why aren't we encouraging more males to be nurses? Is that fair? People have to understand women and men have different interests and pushing sports into women just for the sake of a glorified "gender equality" is not helping to develop their true interests.

    Title IX started off with good intentions, but now has gone to shit. Good peer-reviewed studies have shown that less women participate in competitive sports than men. Many women simply choose to do other activities and sports. Howard University had 67% female students but ~45% female athletes. They already cut a few men's team and added a few women's team, but they simply couldn't find enough women to participate in competitive sports. While it was a fitting thing to put into place at the time, it isn't anymore.

    • @Benioff1

      Or at least refine it that for every one male equals three or four female athletes rather than the current one male athlete to one female athlete.

    This is going to be blown out of proportion, what happens at schools with 65%+ female attendance in college? 65% of the athletes will be girls? Unlikely. This program assumes that 100% of girls are playing sports, which ends up overcompensating and creating excess space for GIRLS. The more sports you take away from boys at the college level, the less likely boys are going to attend those schools and we're going to end up with a lot of 80-90% female majority in colleges and a lot of unhappy girls/boys.

    • @patton281
      @patton281 8 лет назад

      +KidChillin Yes, but how is title ix taking sports away from boys?

    • @commandercarwash9278
      @commandercarwash9278 7 лет назад

      well lets see, say that a university has a female student body of 90%. this automatically means that 90% of sports teams have to be female. now schools have to compensate for that. in doing so they have to open up more programs for woman and take away programs for men, thus taking sports away from boys. this is bad because most sports dont attract woman and the ones that manage to attract any woman dont attract many woman, statistically woman arent very attracted to sports and this is unfair to men.

    • @patton281
      @patton281 7 лет назад

      COMMANDER CARWASH but men have always had programs... if you have 90% population of one group, shouldn't that mean that the 90% should be adequately represented? Or are you suggesting that the 10% are more important and fuck those talking vaginas... they can all go look pretty for you cause you're so fucking important with that wiener between your legs.

    • @patton281
      @patton281 7 лет назад

      COMMANDER CARWASH this system has always been VERY fair to us. In fact it's always favored us. I don't think you understand how statistics works. Statistics change over time. If you look at the proportion of women going into sports, over the past few decades, it's been increasing, and increases with a positive correlation coefficient with the budget put into the programs. So if your hypothesis is that women statically (not a typo) do not play sports as a result of gender, you're assuming the null that budget and gender participation of women have no correltation. And if you control for population increase of women going into college in general, along with population increase in people on earth, you still get a higher correlation coefficient between participation and budget than anything else. So you reject the null. Your hypothesis is incorrect.

    • @patton281
      @patton281 7 лет назад

      COMMANDER CARWASH And even if your hypothesis is that the parameters of the population, rather than the statistic of a sample, is that women are just less likely to go into sports, given a 50-50 population partition between men and women, and 50-50 budget partition between men and women, the hypothesis is still unlikely to be tested properly, considering that the statistics, which you'd be using to approximate the parameters, would tell you nothing about attitudes regarding women going into sports. Attitudes within nuclear families, regarding participation of their daughters in sports...
      So yes, you're right. Women are less likely to go into sports, but you should question whether or not this is a static, immutable state of the nature of being a woman or if it's a result of attitudes throughout history, which vary over time and geography.

    I think they confused the word "equal", if they were treated "equally" then they wouldn't have a separate girls team. There is still segregation, as long as their is a girl's team, and a boy's team. Black people don't have separate bathrooms anymore, but girls still do, why? Because they are not equal. If you think men and women are equal, then you are bi-sexual. And if you refuse to have sex with someone your sex, then that is sexually discrimination. (Now bring on the down-votes...)

That is why there is Men ,and Women basketball ,and Men ,and Women soccer are separated. There few sports that should be unisex like American Football, and cheerleading but some sports should keep the Men ,and Women separated such as Basketball, soccer, Wrestling, and Hockey.

If people could collectively learn real-world skills more prevalently, such as communication skills team? Or collaborative enterprises? Teaching macro-world-scope about environmental relationships with industry and the self? Why not teach more community based sustainability classes and clubs? Gender does not mean feminine. :D
    Gender summary:
    Gender is your biological sex, male, female (or intersex).
    Gender identity is NOT what's between your legs, it's how you identify
    Cisgender = male and penis, Woman and vagina
    Transgender ≈ Male and vagina, female and penis. (there are variations.
    Theres also the people who don't identify as any of them. (Thirdgender)
    Then there's gender roles, the thing we don't like, the ideas we push upon people based on what they have between their legs.
