Hey Russ! My father who is 81 and I have really enjoyed watching your videos together. We live in Glendale, AZ. Keep up the great historical content and stay safe while you're on the road.
You'd think the WW2 air base commanders would have insisted on a 'no photography' policy for security reasons, especially with the Manhattan Project in full swing. But the official photographer did a wonderful job capturing those momentous times.
Official U. S. Army Air Corps photographer with the permission of the Base Commander. Thank goodness someone had the insight to capture the facts for posterity.
Really nice video, enjoyed all the history. Happy there has been so much upkeep to the facilities. Great museum. Loved the eagle statue. Looks like a nice town. 🙂👍
You find the coolest places to visit Russ! I love the storyboards and all the history you share with us! Thank you so much for giving me something to dream about. I can not wait to get out when it cools down here in AZ.
I told them that you recommended this place! I even wrote it in the comments when you sign in. They said a few people have been there already based on your recommendation!! Thank you!!
Thanks Russ for letting me hitch another ride on this Scenic Journey with You! They bring back many special memories. Peace Love and Many Blessings from Northern Arizona!👍✌️❤️🙏🙏🙏😇
I liked your tour of the old air base very much. I've driven through that area a couple times over the years. Desolate, dusty and forever dry but not yet forsaken.
Spetacular! You heard me when I ask you to show this part of interestate 80. Have many attraction along I80. I was visited Wendover and West Wendover in 2015 and I saw these places. I love those part of USA. Thanks a lot from Brazil!
I grew up in Wendover in the 50's, the base was still active and there were dozens of surplus B-29's and B-17's stored there. There was no West Wendover then, and the Nugget Casino was the Stateline and across the street where the Montego Bay is was the A-1 club, ( both owned by the same family), as a kid I would jump the fence and go out to the base and sneak into the hangers, where I would be a pest to the guys working there on the planes, mostly C-119's and F-86 jets, asking a million questions, some airmen would buy me a Coke sometimes, others ignored me and one time a sergeant grabbed me and put me in an Air Force truck ( what a treat!) and took me home, he knocked on the door and my Mom came out and he asked her to keep me off of the base, after he left, I ran down the road, crawled through the fence and beat him back there. I also got out to the Salt Flats with my dad to watch the cars run, that was exciting! I still try to get out there for Speedweek when I can, but it's more difficult as I age. Sometimes I wish I could turn time back to that magical place and be seven years old again.
Hi there, found your channel by chance, saw your Havasu Lake boat ride and the new Indian casino. I worked for that tribe , the Chemehuevi, back in the mid 1990's. I also saw the Parker, Az., and now checking out your Lincoln Hwy. videos. You have a nice voice and fun laugh. Am going to watch more of your videos. Thank you, I love history and trying to see if I can find somewhere out of Southern Calif. to move to. At 66, it's a little scary.
I have one of those old wool army blankets my uncle bought back with him after serving during WW2. It is scratchy but, boy, does it keep you warm. I have on my bed every winter.
Excellent presentation Russ. Congrats to Wendover for maintaining the old WWII base. After combat flying P-39 fighters on Guadalcanal, in 1944 my father was assigned as a flight instructor at an Army Airbase in Thomasville, Georgia. Decades later, he & my Mom were driving past Thomasville on the I-95 interstate when they decided to make a detour to visit the old airbase. They stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. The young attendant told them there had never been an airbase in Thomasville. My father told him, "Just point the way to the city airport; that's where it was."

In June when my Son's family and I stopped by there is was not open. That museum is fantastic. My Son is a Veteran he just retired a few yrs back and my Dad is a Veteran from World War 2. I wished it was open when we stopped. Thank you for taking me along.
those old hangers looks so cool...it looks like as if I was seeing Madres airport in Madres, OR. Nearly identical. Thanks for sharing. Now I want to make a visit here.
Russ I look forward to your podcast I hope to get out to the southwest soon but until then your podcasts keep me motivated...safe travels Russ ..take care
Great visit Russ. Super cool at that airfield and museum. I wonder if there are houses that sit on the boarder of each state. Sleep in Nevada and shower in Utah. Well worth the visit thanks for taking your viewers along.
What a great stop in the middle of nowhere. I'm blown away. Can't wait to see it. My father would have gone crazy over that place. He died in 2003, flew Navy torpedo bombers.
Incredible all that you can miss when you're not even aware of the existence of these historical treasures. Magificent locale and wonderful video, as always. Another place to explore. RICHARD
Hello,Our❤️Dear❤️Sir ! This is my first comment to you. You have special place in our hearts since you are the First RUclips channel we have been following since 2019... ...you videos are my background whenever possible and you music has power to relax me at once... Thank you for all your hard work and efforts. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for the great History lesson today.
Thank you.... marvelous 👍👍🎶😎🤗😳. Makes me want to go again. Been a few years. One time the fellas pulled the beautiful blue and gray jets out of a hangar prepared for flight. Blue and gray...would that be air force and navy? Was walking down the hill just in time to see them take off. Was on the loneliest highway couple months ago. Are we going for vintage train ride in Ely? Truly amazing. Take care
I am 78 yrs. young I have 2 of the old wool blankets which were issued to me back in the day. They still look brand new. spent a lot of nights under them .
I was deployed to wendover years ago for a military exercise. That plane you walked into was the actual plane used in the movie Con-Air, hence the US Marshalls stenciled on it. 👍😊
Thanks for the historic tour. I enjoyed seeing the items that I could only see after I was born by touring with u. Heard a lot about this place & read and saw the pictures in history class. Nice to know it was preserved.
Thank you so much for this video. I have a friend whose father was a integral part of the Manhattan Project. I will definitely tell her about this video.
I haven't been there in years. Thanks for posting. Great museum. I still have an expensive big B-25 Mitchell airplane wall clock I bought there. It never worked right. I put batteries in it anyway so the hands move but it will be off by hours in just a day or two. LoL
Oh yes. Ive spent many or hours at this historic airfield. You could climb up that tower to the platform if you wanted. Also, some movie trivia. The Movie Independence Day, parts of it was filmed there at the field. The part there the aliens come down and shot up the Military and their jeeps, etc., that was filmed over on the south side of the field. Another movie trivia is that old plane you walked into, that was the Airplane prop that was used in the movie Con Air 1997 with Nicolas Cage. That is the plane that crashed and was driven down the city street in the movie. A lot of famous people stepped foot on that plane. So much more history there that you wasn't told about. So, off to Ely now. Are you going to go to the visit the train yard and see the ghost train, maybe take a trip on it? You will be amazed at the history there. Hopefully you will catch the tour of the entire facility and get the back story on everything about the train yard. I'm looking forward to seeing your Vlog about it.
Thank you for the tour of the very historic base. My dad was in the Army Air Corp in 1946-48. Not at that base, but in the Southwest. Very interesting.
I moved to Wendover in October 1978, lived there for 2 years. It sure has changed alot since then. 3 casinos, Stateline, Hideaway and Jims, that was it. Hideaway had a great hamburger and Stateline had a buffet that couldn't be beat $.
I found this video very informative. You always go places i would love to go to. a quick note... next time your up in So Dakota, the Rapid City side, can you stop into the Ellsworth AFB Air and Space Museum. it's worth the trip. i was stationed there for 4 years, 67 to 71. i know you will find it very interesting. Next time? i know you go to So Dakota each year for the Black Hills and the Sturgis Rally. take in the Ellsworth AFB Air and Space Museum. LOOKS like a fine place to move the Reno Air Races to......... wide open , not many houses,....... good parking.... Hotel rooms galore... yep this is THE PLACE !
My unit re-opened Wendover airfield in 1980 and we returned in 81, 84, and 85! I went on 3 of the 4 deployment. We almost didn't go in 80 because Mt Saint Helen's just erupted and there was real concern about volcanic ash causing major problems with jet engines. Also Iran had just changed over and the USAF wanted extensive bare base desert combat flying. We went there in early June and it snowed on the other side of I-80 the first night we were there. It was a very memorable deployment. Actually most everybody who went volunteered to go again! The USAF stopped going there in 85 because Nellis AFB was about 500 miles away and difficult to support from that far away!
This was very interesting. I have been through and stopped and stayed overnight in Wendover many times and never knew about the Airplane Museum, I will have to be sure and stop there next time.
My father, a civilian scientist, helped develop the "Fatman's" implosion detonator at Los Alamos, but occasionally went to Wendover to assist in the practice loading of inert Fatmans into B-29's. Fatmans were so large that they had to be lifted up into a bomber from a pit in the parking apron. Many years ago I asked him if he liked Wendover. He said no, it was to too windy and dusty unlike New England where he lived before the war.
Very cool, he definitely helped make history. I used to go there as a corporate pilot in the 90s. Sitting out there by yourself at night was pretty creepy. It’s actually seems restored now.

Hi Russ, back in the day there was a restaurant on the border, half in Utah and half in Nevada. One would dine on the Utah side and then go in the back to the casino on the Nevada side. This was right about where Montego Bay is now.
Thanks!

Very interesting video. It's amazing what you see away from the interstate highways.

Check your smart phone. The phone knows where the timezones are. Also the airplane you visited is a Fairchild C-123 Provider used in Vietnam
That plane was also the aircraft in the movie "Con Air." The steering wheel was how they steered while making the movie.
