    One thing I failed to mention is I do NOT utilize online grading because we don't do every single problem, and with the solutions manual it is pretty easy to grade.

    I am trying to decide between Abeka Arithmetic 3 or Saxon 3 with Nicole the Math Lady. We have done Abeka up until now and it has worked well but they go so fast with fact practice she seems behind. I have three questions if you don't mind...How long does Saxon three usually take per day? Do you feel it gives a good foundation for math facts on it's own? Is it teacher intensive? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get third grade right. It is a important year

    • @MyCathedralGarden
      @MyCathedralGarden  2 года назад

      I don't mind the questions at all, it is an important year!! Fact practice isn't always one size fits all in my opinion. Maybe slow down the expectation just a bit from what they say? As long as they are working towards mastery with their best effort I think it is good. I would do more of a "beat yourself" type of deal where she tries to beat a time she set the previous week over exactly what they say!
      I don't think it is teacher intensive if you use Nicole, but it could be if that is what you wanted (does that make sense?) And yes it does do math facts, lots of them!
      Any other questions you have, feel free to ask!

    You said that you taught Saxon one in public school. Do you truly believe as a former teacher and now a homeschool mom that this spiral approach is the way to teach math well??
    I ask because my daughter is about to start kindergarten and I'm losing sleep deciding between mastery and spiral. Top contenders are Saxon and rod and staff, but I'm also looking at horizons, cle, Singapore.

    • @MyCathedralGarden
      @MyCathedralGarden  Год назад

      Hey hey! I truly think the answer to your question is BOTH! Saxon DOES incorporate both mastery and spiral. They want you to master the facts for sure, the student has flash cards they learn from and a speed set with every lesson I believe. If I were in your spot, I would be looking into "Math With Confidence." I haven't personally used it, but I HAVE looked into it quite extensively for my sister-in-law, and oh my goodness it looks AMAZING! It is both spiral and mastery without being TOO much. Just be sure with kindergarten-2nd grades you are also incorporating a calendar time if they don't and you will be set. I have a video on how we did calendar if you want to see how we did that flow. We used horizons as well and found it was a good base. I think any way you go you will have a good year, those are all solid curriculums!

    • @laurenrasmussen7997
      @laurenrasmussen7997 Год назад

      Would you stick with math with confidence after kinder or go to saxon? I was thinking Saxon 1 for kinder? I also plan to use all about reading because it looks kind of fun. I want to provide a good foundation but at the same time not kill her love of learning before she even starts!

    • @MyCathedralGarden

      Oh I totally get it! I would stick with Math with Confidence if we liked it well enough. I looked at all the ages and was beyond impressed! You will LOVE All About Reading! Thank you for this review! I have Irish twins (13mths apart) going into 5th grade next year. Would you recommend buying a workbook for each child or do you think I could get away with one Saxon 6/5 set? You mentioned your son does the work on a separate paper (possibly in your flip through video), are you able to reuse the entire set with another child?

    • @MyCathedralGarden
      @MyCathedralGarden  2 года назад

      Yes that’s right and yes I show how in the flip through video… the only problem I could see is finding a spot they can look at the book at the same time to do the problems. Let me know if you can’t find the flip through video, it should be listed

      @@MyCathedralGarden Thank you! I did find your flip through video. That makes complete sense about having them looking at the book at the same time. I won’t need a whole other set, so I’ll try to find a second workbook used.
      One more request… have you done a video on what you use for language arts for your 5th grader? (I’m new to your channel.) I’ve struggled to find a language arts that includes every component (reading, writing, grammar, and spelling) and does each well. I’m not opposed to using different programs for each, but there’s so much curriculum out there, it gets overwhelming.

      Yes! I have a 5th grade curriculum video that tells you what we are using this year (and I may mention what we used last year, which was different) and I have curriculum videos for each year we have full time homeschooled/I’ve been on RUclips I think.
