I think he nailed it. That sounds like the truth. The triangle applies to everything, sound, color, art style, motion, even story!
Abstraction also apply to programming (and many other fields I believe),
we programmer always try to seek for higher abstraction if possible, because higher abstract component can be used at different type of application, and they can be reused overtime (to other environment).
Think about this, an invention called "pencil" is still very useful till today because we can use it not only for writing, drawing, calculating, marking on ground ... the design of pencil is general purpose, this kind of abstraction don't limit it to specific purpose, and the system full of these component is much easy to manage since each component can be replaced easily and don't confused other nearby components.
That was great, specially useful when working on a team since everyone has their own idea on what the artstyle should go for

A brilliant way to illustrate the realms of reality, stylized and abstract forms. In essence, light and sound work the same same way.

As a big fan of McCloud's works on the subject of comics, I enjoyed the references made. However, I believe Mr. Hjalmarsson should flip his directions. His "abstraction" of animation was less an abstraction and more of a simplification of the movements, which is what the "stylization" is in the picture plane. To me that lateral movement in the art style was better mirrored by the vertical movement in the animation. Abstraction isn't just disinformation, but rather accentuation of information through either simplification or exaggeration. When thought of this way, I think it is easier to say that the wacky, over-the-top bouncing box is actually the abstraction of a falling box as opposed to the conceptualization of the falling box, which, in following with McCloud's picture plane, would be demonstrated in a simple two-frame animation of the box in the air and the box resting on the ground. This is kind of neat in a way, because it essentially maps out a bridge that spans the gap between animation and comics (the two-frame animation being essentially an animated comic). I think you could expand this fully into a complete theory of all artistic mediums. Great work. Very thought provoking.
i thought he was going to show some Smear animation to represent the abstract area. In that way he could remove frames while the brain fiils up the lack of movement by focusing on the deformation the object
I noticed cartoonists started to mix all three Reality, Abstract and Stylized stiles in one cartoon. Children's brains must be melting.

The motion of the stylized cube has more variables (also scale) than the one of the realistic cube (only position and rotation). That's not, what stylized means, according to the explanation about images.
What I would have thought to be stylized is, when looking at it as a keyframe based animation, removing keyframes and simplify interpolation. The partially stylized version would be a cube moving down with constant speed and then rotating back with constant speed, a more stylized version would be a cube first in the air and then (using constant interpolation) just being at the goal, just like the first example with the cylinder. I could agree the constant interpolation thing is already abstract, but I'd say adding scaling of a cube is rather abstract than stylized.
Abstract for animation seems like those wacky Gmod or SFM animations.

This is the only thing my brain understands completely at first glance. Everything is exactly where my brain wants it to be, theres no "fix it" button going off
i have noticed that most of the presenters have Stage fright except for few who clearly have experience when talking to huge crowd and in front of cameras...maybe u should let them sit on a desk and talk from there and let the slide show do the work just like what Pixologic does, this way it makes them more conformable and if they want to stand an talk then they have that option.
Has been done in previous years I think and probably a desk and a chair can be moved easily enough.
Its almost like most people working in this industry are awkward nerds.

I like how it's completely ignores the cultural differences applying that our brains working by default based on Disney style animation. Only one example from Miyazaki. How about Yuri Norstein? What for one culture seems an abstract is perfectly in the realms of reality for another.
