    As a former radio reporter/announcer and producer in SOUND for animation I can tell you that the ANDERSONS and their team must've recorded the audio track for their special effects FIRST! THEN mated their trademarked form of model animation to it. It's THE SOUND that always sells the pictures! Not the reverse.

    George Sewell and Ed Bishop were cast absolutely perfect for the parts they played in UFO. In fact, just about all of the cast were. So many nice touches, and great performances. Sylvia Anderson had true genius ideas with the outfits, purple wigs for example were perfect. Plenty of butch men, and gorgeous women, excitement, suspense, good story lines.....this series had the lot......even the start and end (spooky) music was right. And who thought up the slide tubes into the interceptor and Sky 1 cockpits? This was so cool, just right. Genius!! This series was just a class act, and personally I thought that Space 1999 did not come anywhere near it. No wonder Gerry Anderson always loved UFO, and wished he had had the chance to make more episodes. UFO is a series just crying out for a re-vamp series. However, they should look at the original series and understand from the outset what level of quality they have to match or better both in acting and storyline. The old UFO series quality in terms of acting and storyline is a pretty tough act to follow.

    • @FandersonUfo
      @FandersonUfo  5 лет назад +5

      You sir may be better fan of the show than myself perhaps. The slide tube idea may even have been derived from the slide into Taranaka's office that Bond was tricked into in Tokyo for 1967's "You Only Live Twice". I fear what 21st Century Hollywood would do with the story though. A movie alone would not do it justice. A Netflix series of a kind would be my preference. Respect and regards FandersonUfo

    • @MrMoggyman
      @MrMoggyman 5 лет назад +1

      @@FandersonUfo I agree. Would Hollywood replicate and better the series, or would they simply butcher and destroy it? If the Thunderbirds re-vamp is anything to go by we know the answer to that. Certainly Netflix might be the way if they can obtain the rights to re-vamp the series.

      Ha! Some shows should be left as they are with no " reimagining " you know how these things work out. The movie is never as good as the book we say in the US. Except for the possible Interview with a Vampire. Dr. Who? Tom Baker and none other. That Tenant fellow I could beat him even more stupid with one or possibly both of his sneakers. Or possibly blast him with a Dalek Stick. I found The Young Ones thoroughly puerile, forcefully silly, several orders of magnitude stupid. Very much enjoyed it. Keeping up appearances? Well.....I suppose so my wife caught me watching it and to my utter dismay took to it. Her laughing was most unwelcome. We have a public station that thought either British programming was classy or cheap. Either was it was just as bad for you as 2lbs of chocolate eaten at once. A fine sounding idea, but hospital would try very hard to stifle their looks of bemusement while finding a huge needle for industrial strength insulin. Of course American TV can and often one ups them with even worse barrel scrapings.

    Gerry Anderson’s first (or second) foray into live action with human actors. Doppelgänger movie was first i think, then used the vehicles from that movie for this UFO tv series. Love the theme music, love the full office elevator, love the sets, the costumes(thanks Sylvia). Women in key positions. The actors and stories bring it to life. Special effects, model miniatures that give it a day to day working unit. In the USA I didn’t get to see UFO until a few years later. Thanks to Gerry and Sylvia and their whole crew for this great series! Wish it had more seasons. Space:1999 doesn’t count.

    UFO is a cut above most TV sci fi. Why? Because it's basically a futuristic version of the procedural drama where an elite team of investigators solve a new case each week, only SHADO faces aliens instead of terrorists, serial killers or enemy agents. The format works really well. But it's enhanced by the FX work and unlike many "lonely at the top" leaders, Straker's broken personal life is dramatised in a very three dimensional and detailed way. So that's how I'd describe UFO... a futuristic procedural drama.

    • @FandersonUfo

      Good evening sir. Very much of a film noir aspect to some of the earth bound stories I would say. The final episode being very much so.

    • @adriansherlockdamondark.1094
      @adriansherlockdamondark.1094 6 лет назад +2

      Yes, UFO made me want to make film noir science fiction, that is a discussion I had with the director of photography on my pilot for "Damon Dark" in 1996. I've noticed the writing gets clearer the more I focus on the procedure. Interestingly, a recent article (may have been in the AV Club, not sure) referred to Space:1999 as "astronaut procedural"!!! :)

    • @FandersonUfo
      @FandersonUfo  6 лет назад +4

      99 as astronaut procedural - that is one way to describe that mess. I am sure there have been many very learned discourses analyzing 99 in careful detail. It was a series cobbled together at the last minute from the ruins of UFO so as you might have guessed I find it very hard to take seriously. Procedures and methods tend to be flawless in UFO. The whole main premise of 99 is bloody nonsense.

      The McGuffin of the Moon going wandering... yes, on the face of it, a bad idea. However, to be fair to the series, I think Johnny Byrne, who later went to write for Dr Who, saved the series somewhat by passing the Moon through a space/time warp into 'different space' and writing a number of 'bottle' episodes set entirely on the Moonbase which would work even if the Moon were not wandering the Universe.

    • @FandersonUfo
      @FandersonUfo  6 лет назад +3

      Yes I know they tried their very best and had some good moments but I think we both would have preferred that effort dedicated elsewhere. What do you think sir can UFO be revived as a bare bone web based series? Straker's private life, such as it is, could be fully explored. Tracking down mind controlled humans by SHADO detectives could lead to a lot of fine story writing. Alien culture and purpose explored. Even space combat is not a big problem because CGI costs pennies now. My concern would be getting a cast who could do justice to the material. I've seen a few Star Trek continues etc. Very nice sets and CGI but the acting and directing is 5th rate most of the time. Will check out Damon Dark, would guess it is still on RUclips.

      The pace of life and our shrinking attention spans makes it harder for most to enjoy vintage entertainment these days sir. Are modern forms of entertainment better or merely faster paced and concentrated? I'm not sure all modern sci fi is better nor that all vintage sci fi is worse. I try to appreciate both but I never feel that anything produced recently provides a fantasy as it were that I care about in the least. Modern sci fi has become quite shallow lately - everybody is afraid to take chances with the massive budgets involved.

    Understanding an actor's role can make a big difference in assessing their performance. George Sewell was spot-on as an SST pilot. Beginning @ 10:16, his "self-assured restraint" is a skilled delivery of subtlety.
    For example............
    The slight delay between uttering "brakes" and "off", then not immediately grasping the wheel until the ship is rolling. Such momentary pauses allow a pilot to "feel" that proper thrust is being applied. With his eyes fixed forward, responding to the co-pilot's call-out once sufficient take off speed is attained, his pull of the wheel is purposeful and smooth. These and many other nuances, precisely reflect how an experienced, hyper-confident flight crew of a "heavy", high-value, high-responsibility ship, conduct their extremely serious jobs.
    An unimportant scene for the story......but performed with an acute awareness of the role's supreme importance.
    Hence, this establishes Colonel Freeman's nature....and reveals George Sewell's dedication to the craft.
    Both of them..... know exactly what they're doing.
    Hey Fanderson! I deleted, then re-posted this comment because some hemorrhoid replied to it bragging about hacking. When that got a similar reply, I ended the thread. They're outta here!

      @@dandare2586 - As you know this series was produced 1969 - 70. Long before military tech was something the general public would would have a lot of detailed knowledge of. Aim-7 and early sidewinder I think were available in 1970 but during the cold war that kind of tech was not discussed widely. Long before the internet as well so unless you subscribed to Janes Defence Weekly the general public would be more comfortable with un-smart weapon systems. I have no problem with UFO's tech tree as it works dramatically in the alternate universe portrayed. UFO has it's own laws of physics in it's own little bubble of fantasy and is entertaining. I would avoid playing the game at work these days even with women who are your friends and are not bothered by the attention. You could easily wind up getting fired because some one over heard and thought you should be reported. There is also the rarer case of women taking on the role of Alec and flirting with men. Studying the differences between our Psychologies has been fascinating. Their vastly greater history has an influence on how the English communicate. Undertone and guarded-intimation are perhaps more representative of their truer expressions, than overt gestures. The application of such insights eventually transformed my understanding, then appreciation for... these earlier attempts at exporting examples of their technical creativity.
