You really spend a lot of time with the planting and harvesting on the tractors in the field. That with all that you do in the shop in repairs and so forth, how do you find the time to do filming? Love the video, I'm glad I had this come up in my queue and got the opportunity to watch the dual White equipment in action, thanks Chris. I hope you have a wonderful day!
Sometimes it can be a challenge. You just have to make time. That's why I tend to not have as many harvest videos. The days are getting shorter, and I just want to get done, not mess around with getting off, setting up the camera, filming, then stopping again to get the camera and either set up another angle or get back to work.
06:07 I love the camera position you did here. It really shows the individual planting rows working. You’ve always been an innovator in using new places to fix the camera. Bravo 👏!
It came with little decals to put over the face where the sound is supposed to come out, to silence it. Too bad the buzzer is underneath! Way too loud for the inside of a cab.
This land has not seen a plow before you started planting corn. A big difference to Germany. Thank you very much for this video and greetings from Lower Saxony in the north of Germany.
stayed home from church on Sunday to help dad set check wire when I was 7 with a two row J.D. I dont think I've seen a 6 row planter here in Iowa for 20 years at least . all 16 & 24 now. anyway, fun to watch. we spent 2 days planting garden this week so I'm tired enough to deserve to watch you work. :)
nice video. reminded me when my dad, who always planted, had surgery during planting season. my uncle, who always ran the combine, had to plant. fall harvest ,uncle cussed all the crooked rows. he had a lot more respect for dad after that and never planted again.
@@rogerburkholder7524 , pretty sure it's the same planter. I like the souble frame, the rocks aren't as hard on the row units when the lift wheels aren't in between them.
It’s good to see your in the field planting. I’m glad I got everything in the ground 2 weeks ago because it’s rained on and off every day since. I can’t trust the weather forecast and it is disturbing
Looks like your planter is doing a nice job in notill. Correct me if I’m wrong but White planters are positive air at the meter instead of vacuum correct? Is one better than the other? We had a White I think it was a 6806 when I was growing up to plant soybeans. It was set to 10” rows. It did a nice job but was high maintenance.
Positive air pressure is better in my opinion. When Harry Deckler first came up with the idea for these air meters, he used his wife's vacuum cleaner to hold seeds to a homemade seed plate. The drop in pressure caused condensation, which made the seeds want to stick to the plate. That's when he switched things around and went with positive air pressure. I've never run a vacuum planter, but from I understand you need to put talc in the seed to help keep seeds from sticking due to that condensation.
We’ve been sitting on go for 2.5 weeks waiting on moisture! It’s dry in central NC for this time of year. No till and planter won’t go in consistently. We had 40 inches more than normal rain over last 12 months and it really beat the ground down. When it dried it got hard.
Dad liked the way White planters used air pressure instead of vacuum to hold the seed. You could check a ruler on how accurately the seeds were spaced.
I don't know if you have ever done a in depth video of a white planter, but the small farmers need to know that for conventional planting corn, any other planter is a waste and they are being hosed by gimmick upgrades. White air meters are the best oe non electric unit planter units ever produced.
I get the philosophy of 1 bag each and should run out at the same time but, not every bag weighs exactly the same believe it or not. Just love watching the older equipment still going strong. Not a fan of the new stuff that's out, too much electronics that fail quite often. Awesome video as always. Cheers :)
They're all supposed to be 80,000 kernel bags, although I'm sure there is a slight variation in that. A 35 pound bag should run out about the same time as a 50 pound bag, it's just a difference in seed size.
Great video bro, winter kicks in tomorrow for us but still very mild here, well for the time of year anyway and most of NZ is well above what the temperature should be. Safe travels up your way
That auger might be getting to the end of it's life. It started out on the first 5100 series planter we had back around 1980, and went to our next 5100 about 10 years later. I was going to get a new one for this planter, but the guy I sold my 5100 to didn't want the auger, so I figured might as well use it. It's amazing it has lasted this long with the amount of fertilizer that has gone through it.
I just turned my allis 385 air planter into a deere allis planter😆, switched out the quad disc units to ME 2. Was getting difficult to get parts and the plastic meter housings were kind of a pain. Kinda sad to see it bastardized though. Nice work on the different views.
I am, and I do like some design aspects of the Gleaner, but my Massey has been a good machine. I'd like to find a relatively low houred newer version of the one I have.
M&W seed? Is that anything like the products Elmo Minor manufactured at his M&W Gear Co. who was famous for better piston and sleeves, turbocharging? If so your corn should be knee-high by June 4th. Thank you for the great memories. You need Bob Hope's "Thanks for the Memories" as your theme song.
And an extra (G)ear for higher (growing) speed. Elmo and the W in M&W Gear got started by making extra gear to make the F-20, F-30 IH tractors have a road gear. He was good at seeing a need, coming up a product, and selling it. I went to college with his son.
M&W seed is that a local seed company for you there? I always enjoy test plots hopefully you do a video on it I enjoy that kind of information. Get more corn in cricket row than a straight row is what grandpa always said 🤣🤣
Yes. M&W is a Michigan based company. I thought about recording us doing the plot, but I always feel awkward asking if they mind being on RUclips. Then again, I haven't had anyone tell me no so far.
The next field I went into had the oats that almost made a January crop. It was hard to see my mark and I was starting to think auto steer might not be that bad. Then I adjusted my marker disc and got back to work.
I've seen some 6 row 5100 Whites for sale recently, quite reasonably priced too.. There's some bells and whistles they don't have that newer planters do, But the meter is the same basic air meter that they used up until this high dollar precision stuff came along.

This is No Till type farming. I’ve seen the fields in Germany and they work them very well before planting.

Kudos to your brother I believe. Bet you two probably skinny dipped in that cool looking pond a day or two, eh?

My wife recently asked me why I don't have a bigger planter. I said then I'd get done too quick and she'd find honey-do jobs for me.
I have a 7000 four row but I only plant enough for a couple dozen steers. Ear corn makes good feed.
My son and I found a design flaw in the White planting system that causes the the planter to skip. I'd love to send you the video.
Can you email it to me?

Nice seeing the old equipment working. 🔧
I don’t have Oliver’s but I have antique equipment that I farm with and make videos about. Can’t beat the old stuff!

In the night footage, it looks like something is growing in the field. Is that remnants of a cover crop or weeds that will be sprayed later?
It's remnants of a cover crop.

Does turbulence from the exhaust ever bother the drone?
Hasn't yet. Manure coming off the spreader... that's another story.

Allot of people use White planters. Did they manufacture it them selfs?
Yes. I got to tour the factory where they built them. They are a simple, yet incredibly accurate machine.

We're dry up here too. Not that dry, but the top is getting tough. We got about a quarter inch today, so that should help.

Great vid. I "covet" your even being able to get in the field. Here in NC Indiana it's a little wet to support machinery.

I have a question, Why do some Oliver tractors have a tower on top of the transmission?
I'm not sure I'm following what you mean by tower. Maybe you're referring to the hydraulic unit on tractors like the 77, Super 88, 770, and so on?
