The scary thing: 1) that is just two passing pathways that translate from the gi. 2) lately his nogi mount has looked really good and it looks like Roger has been coming over to train with him. He may become as great in the gi as no gi given a year or two time.
Makes sense. The friction of the gi makes control easier and stronger, and favors pressure passing much more than in no-gi. His gi passing is probably monstrous.

My opinion is that if a No-Gi individual black belt never trained in Gi and puts the Gi on for the first time he/she isn’t a black belt in BJJ but a No-Gi black belt.
Starting jiu jitsu is the best decision I ever made for sure, after 12 months I do basically everything also Gordon does here, I rolled hard rounds in Colorado then now Florida but I use my head like that, control the leg, I naturally pass similarly to that now, and now that I do no Gi, it’s made me even better in the gi because I’m used to it and people have noticed my gi grips being “better than white belt” but it’s normal because I guess that’s what happens when you roll with higher belts than you and you watch videos and eventually you just realize things to do when you defend like a knee shield or half gaurd

He legitimately understands how the human body moves and uses concepts to expose your weaknesses. Plus having Danaher as a coach I'd bet he'd win Gi Worlds next year if he tried.

No matter what anyone says, if you pour your heart into this sport for hard enough and long enough to get a black belt, only to get completely handled like a 2 stripe white belt, that has got to be disheartening. I reminds me of my first tournament at blue belt. I got walked through so hard that I saw exactly how much I didn't know despite thinking I was actually beginning to get good. They treated my like I wasn't even there and I felt like I was a day one white belt all over again!
It will always be amazing to me that there are so many levels to this stuff. To think that there is people out there toying with black belts like that is just insane to me.

He’s a crazy strong dude but my impression is that’s not really a factor that even comes into play except when he’s competing with the very top tier guys nearer his size like Peña or Galvao. Even then his strength, when he uses it, seems mostly like it’s just to balance out against their strength. He dominates his matches because of his technique.

yeah he was playing and giving up positions against a legit blackbelt. and in the Gi. it was methodical and comfortable for him. also his guard passing and high stepping translated really well.

GR could have subbed his opponent many times but he instead worked on other aspects of BJJ like control, position, passing, reversal from bottom etc... that is why he is GOAT in no gi. He will be GOAT in gi. Based on videos others just working on subbing and not other aspects of game
