The Krashies is an unreasonably funny name for that 😂😂 But in all seriousness, it's only thanks to Refold that I'm able to spend time (and money) on these videos! The more you share the video and the more reach we have, the more effort I can put in! Thanks for your kind words :)
Love this, thank you for sharing yomitan. I stopped immersion and sentence mining when vocabsieve started fighting me haha. I look forward to give it a go again. Thanks. ❤
I occasionally feel bad when I put time into something like that, but I enjoy it AND get to reap the rewards for months to come. I hope you have fun with that hour of fiddling!
Glad to see Refold make a video about another part of its process! Also weird that no one has a made an all-in-one program or process and sold. I want what I’m seeing but don’t wanna go through all the hassle (cut-and-paste with no media for me it is!)
Wow, I used your instructions to set up Anki, ASB player, and Yomitan on Linux. It's a bit wonky, but wow, it's very impressive in action. I really like it.
Thanks for all the valuable information in this video! It’s going to be super helpful for my language learning journey. By the way, for shows without subtitles, a great trick is to use Subtitle Edit with its audio-to-text feature (Whisper) to generate subtitles. Then, you can load them into asbplayer to watch with subtitles seamlessly.
For these kind of shortcut commands, apart from the game controller, you can also use mice and keyboards for gamers, which are often equipped with dedicated programmable keys.
I really appreciate these tech vids. Have helped me so much. Judging from the response to the tech videos I don’t think you have to worry about them being too complex. Any chance of an mpvacious video? I recall you saying you used that in the past (and the delay in appending media to cards is noticeably smaller with mpv)
This is super awesome. I need to try this soon. I've realized how time-consuming adding cards manually is. Also, I know this sounds like a crazy question, but is there anything like this for mobile? I do most of my immersion using my phone so I thought that would be pretty cool.
@@Refold As far as I know, you can install chrome extensions on android using kiwi browser. There is also an Anki connection addon on android. I suppose it should work almost the same as on a PC
hey thanks a lot for that, I have successfully set up my German workflow! I have 1 question though: Is there somewhere where I can learn more about this refold mining type note? I would like to see how configurable it is, I tried to display more definitions by including glossary-brief but it doesnt look as nice, the separate definitions are not separated visually in the best way
Is there a way to have Yomitan highlight the entire subtitle so that the created card is not just a single word but the entire sentence? Or is it just better to make cards single words with sentences for context?
Super helpful video! A couple questions that came up for me. Will try and do some independent research later and will post the answers myself if I can come up with anything on my own. I'm using ASB Player + VocabSieve 1. Is there a way to move the sentence pronunciation to the front of the card? 2. If a sentence is spread out over multiple subtitles, what's the easiest way to capture the full sentence on one card? 3. Can you mark 'pass' for a card without revealing the other side of the card? I'd rather not see the English definition if I feel I have a strong understanding of the sentence already.
1. You can edit the Note type to do basically whatever you'd like. I don't like having audio on the front, since I remember the exact scene too easily with the sound. But it's totally up to you. 2. Probably record the next sentence audio as well. I remember it just adding the audio, not replacing it in the card. But to get all the text there, you'd probably need to do that manually. I'd probably just mine two cards and then combine them later when studying. Pressing E while studying opens the edit window. However, I mostly likely would just look for easier sentences. There are plenty of good, one line sentences that you'll come across. 3. I think there's a Migaku add-on that also does this. But I personally just slam the space bar twice really quickly.
Are there any tools that would work well with a dvd I’m playing in the computer eg through vlc? Or are they all aimed at streaming? (Yes I’m old and still use DVDs lol)
DVDs and physical media are GREAT! Especially if you can get the edition released in a target language country, there are often subtitles already included. You can use MKV (sorta like VLC, but different) and a few plugins, but it's really difficult to get set up. I set it up over 2 years ago and have NO idea how I got it working. I've tried to make a tutorial video on it, but couldn't figure it out 😂 I would honestly recommend using DVDs for freeflow/rewatching favorites and cave into streaming media to sentence mine with. It's not ideal, but it does make things less frustrating. Sorry I'm not more helpful! - Ben
Hi! You totally can (for Vocabsieve, I assume). Here's a little guide I wrote. Skip the steps to find a dictionary if you already have one: 1. Go here docs.freelanguagetools.org/resources.html 2. Find a source you like (I recommend kaikki.org/) 3. Choose your language 4. Choose "all word forms" at the top 5. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click "Download JSONL" 6. Save it somewhere easy to access on your computer. 7. Rename it to (or save as) *namehere*.json (remove the L) 8. Move the file somewhere it's not going to be deleted (I put it in my Vocabsieve folder) 9. Open Vocabsieve configuration 10. In the General tab, click Manage Local Resources, the Import dictionary. 11. Locate and select the file you just moved 12. ??? 13. Go to the Sources tab and select the dictionary as a source (drag from the right to the left)
Thanks for reporting that! I have no idea what happened, I must have linked the wrong file or something. It's now fixed! refold.link/sentence-mining-anki-design
Anyone know why the sound wont export over to the card? It takes all the actions like its doing it (mine takes me to a separate screen to export sound after recording audio.) I’m using Mac and Chrome
I wonder whether it is possible to use several different Wiktionaries at the same time? I noticed before that Czech Wikislovník sometimes contain more words and information, but surprisingly, sometimes not (once the German version provided the necessary info instead).
Yeah, you can stack a few (if you have local versions). Vocabsieve doesn't have a ton of online options. But if you make local copies of several different sources, you can add them all.
@@Refold Thanks, just looking at this. I use Yomitan for my Chinese, but try to help setting up Vocabsieve for some Czech learners. Do you have a trick to get subtitles from IVysílání to the ASB Player?
@@Refold And another thing - is there anything like a Word Frequency Analyzer of Czech, which could process words from a text and find their original inflected forms and count the frequency, perhaps even showing different forms appearing in the text? Such tool would be so great. The online frequency analyzers I found are only getting words as any separate units, some of them attempt to show two and three words phrases, but this kind of function similar to VocabSieve ability to trace the origins I did not find yet.
ok, at 0:13 is it making the card with sentence audio with just one push? how does it know where the sentence ends? does it still work if the subtitles aren't lined up perfectly?
Yes, one push. It uses subtitle timings to get the sentence, so if the subtitles are wrong, it'll be a little off. But it's usually fine or at least very close.
omg thank you so much for putting this video together!! right now TTS shows "HyperTTS New Preset Add Audio Preview Audio Full text Selection 汉字" not buttons...?
Please help. I downloaded asb player and anki connect. However, all of the fields inside of asb player only say front or back for me. Did i miss something or do i have to pay money for a certain deck? Thanks
Even tho I didn’t watch the whole vid yet do I need to put the word and then a example sentence or can I just put the sentence then the definition of the sentence if that make any sense
Yep! By default, `Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right` arrow keys will increase or decrease the subtitle offset. But you can also set the previous subtitle to be "now" (wherever you are currently in the video) with Ctrl + Left. It might take some playing around to get used to, but it works.
@@RefoldAppreciate it. I'm so stupid that those options are available keyboard shortcuts. Delay is fix now. I still have two problems. The note type won't install in anki. I'm getting the same error with others and vocabsieve won't install on my mac. I tried to follow the macos instruction but still not working. Edit: I'm okay now. I use a different format for my cards and won't force that vocabsieve. Thank you so much for free sentence mining tutorial.
At around 15:44, the grey buttons at the right side of 读 like the green plus icon turned into color when you selected the "model." But when I do the same thing, it remains grey. Any solution? I'm using Yomitan.
When doing sentence mining, should I add a sentence translation as well? I might be okay with not adding it, but I am not sure whether or not I will fully understand the sentence while reviewing if there is no translation for the whole sentence. What do you guys at Refold recommend? I couldn't find this in the Guide.
It depends on your level and the kinds of cards you're making. When I was mining earlier on in the process, I added sentence translations when I reviewed cards, since the sentences frequently had a few new words I was still learning. But now, I don't add a translation since anything I mine I'm able to understand with just a single definition (1T sentence). it's sort of up to you and your work flow.
I am import the file "RefoldMiningDesigns.apkg". But I see the error in the import: "Unable to read file. It probably requires a newer version of Anki to import". Anki version Version 24.06.3 (last version). Thanks for you the help
I think I've seen that before. I don't remember how it can be fixed. I'd try these in this order: turn it off and on again, update browser, turn off hardware acceleration, try a different browser, make a bug report on the ASBplayer github and get direct support there
did you figure it out? I also have a bug between the audio and the asb player subtitles, I used a mac and yomichan but the problem is when im doing sentence mining the audio is delayed with the text
@@JosueSanchezUpper Yes, the laptop I was sentence mining on was lacking the required cpu. The solution was the keep the laptop connected to the charger while recording the audio. This fixed the issue for me
I'm sure there is, but you'd have better luck asking in our Japanese server. There are lots of helpful techy people there. However, you shouldn't really need furigana. If you're still learning to read kana, just focus on that. Then, when you're working on learning the reading, audio/a real pronunciation is better for flashcards. For watching a show or reading, furigana is a lot more useful. And I think Yomitan is great at it.
That usually happens when Vocabsieve or Yomitan fails to make a new card to add audio/an image to. And the most common reason I've found that Vocabsieve or Yomitan fails to make a card is if you already have a card with the same target word on it.
Excellent guide! I'm just on the fence whether this is actually useful. Is there research supporting the idea that vocab priming actually works? Otherwise I could just be immersing with other stuff instead of spending time in Anki
As with most things in SLA, there is hardly any real, worthwhile research, but we do have plenty of anecdotal evidence and experience working with learners. Like I talk about in my "Role of Anki" video, memorizing words is very different from acquiring them. The goal is to acquire words. But actually getting enough, comprehensible and diverse input to acquire (let's say) 8000 words is very, very difficult. Second language learners simply can't get enough immersion time with "other stuff" to "naturally" acquire enough vocab. Native speakers use, basically, graded readers for years, go to school, and have lots of exposure to every aspect of life in their language for 12+ hours per day for at least a decade to learn enough words to sound fluent. Second language learners need some kind of artificial boost in their exposure to words in order to acquire them in a time efficient way. People who do no reading and almost exclusively freeflow immersion nearly always struggle with vocab size and ability to parse sentences. In our experience, spending 10-30 minutes with Anki/day is much more efficient for vocab growth, which is the primary barrier to understanding. Beyond the beginner stages, it's much less clear. If you're understanding 60%+ of something and lookup new words you need in order to understand, that's probably more than enough. At that point, sentence mining can still be a useful tool, even if you never study the words! It can be hard to focus on content that you don't fully understand, so having something that's reminding you to look for new words and think about them is very handy. For example, I do 2 new cards per day with Czech, but try to mine when I can since it helps me focus and is very seamless. And in Spanish, I haven't done new Anki cards in like 15 months. I just read and talk to people and that's more than enough exposure to learn new words, but I have 99% vocab coverage already, so I can do that. And if I were to start learning any new language tomorrow, I would certainly use flashcards to learn the most common 1-2000 words since acquiring those without any supports would be very slow and frustrating (but possible with the right kind of content). I hope this answers your question, at least a bit!
@@Refold This answer might be even more helpful than the video! Thank you very much for putting in the effort of writing all that down. I can see now how Anki can be one way to make more content into comprehensible input. My takeaway would be this: If your TL has loads of great content (Spanish seems to have many videos and readers, etc) it's probably best to just stick to immersing in that. But with other TLs (probably all that aren't Spanish or English💀) you'll need some scaffolding. Teachers could provide that, or Anki priming, or a pop-up dictionary, or whatever. Anki is often a strong habit (don't wanna lose that streak!) and will probably also help with keeping you motivated to stick with your language.
In the Styling section of the cards (when studying, hit "E" to edit the card then look for the word "Cards" and then click Styling), there are lots of variables you can change near the top. Or, if you'd like, you can go even further down the CSS and edit that. To add furigana, you can either add it instead of the sentence translation, or add it in the sentence themselves. Or in definition 2. But how you do that and your source for the furigana is up to you. My personal choice would just to have more audio instead since, from everything I've heard about furigana, it's a pain to get working correctly.
Has anyone already written a script to automate the controller setup on mac? Also what versione of Anki are you using? I'm on 24.04.1 and when I try to get the refold mining design I get this mesage "Unable to read file. It probably requires a newer version of Anki to import." Am I the only one?
I just imported it fine on version 24.06.3. Someone else mentioned they had a similar issue. It's probably a good idea to update your Anki anyway, since a recent ish issue had a fairly big flaw/oversight (which is fixed in newer versions).
Short answer, not really. The options are pretty bad for mobile immersion. With a tablet, you can do some workarounds and do something similar. Here's my full video on the subject: ruclips.net/video/pt9xr888FEA/видео.html
It likely doesn't have "permission" to record things. Maybe try checking the settings and ensuring that it's able to. But, I wonder what site you're using? And with what browser?
I'm not positive what you're asking, but if you're asking how to add audio for only the target word, that goes in the "word_audio" field. If you're using Vocabsieve, you can set up Forvo as an audio source and it will automatically add it. Or you can use HyperTTS at the end (and an Azure voice) to add TTS audio for words.
@@gabrielgallardo5824 To do that, you're going to have to code custom JavaScript. Anki shouldn't be *that* big of a time sync, so I'd recommend just keeping your cards simple and use immersion mediums that have pronunciation and furigana built in.
Hey, I do not know where to write this but I have a problem with the program “Vocabsieve”, it only shows me the translation from Google Translate which looks very poor, and from another dictionary such as “Wiktionary” no longer. Maybe someone had the same problem? (German)
You'll want to install a local dictionary. Here's a text guide: 1.
@@Refold this is a really useful guideline, thanks! but now subtitles from Netflix are not appear automatically on VocabSieve as you show on your video. Any hints on it?
I made a video about tools on mobile, but the short answer is "no." It's technically possible, but it's a massive pain in the butt, breaks often and isn't worth it.
I was using jidoujisho from github, and it worked well with RUclips videos, downloaded series, music, etc. The only problem is getting the dictionaries, I used it for en-es and it worked well.
Blbý (as well as the related noun blbec - idiot) is quite colloquial, used to be consider vulgar when I was kid, nowadays it is commonly used in spoken Czech.
Does anyone here able to use this tool? I didn't manage make it work. I've tried several times following the step by step process! 🤔 I got really frustated!
Sorry it didn't work for you! I know how frustrating that can be. If you're not willing to sit down and really try to figure it out (which I wouldn't blame you for, at all), it might be best to find a more manual process to achieve the same result. But, if you do want to continue, there are a few important questions. What kind of computer do you have? What tools were you trying to install? What *did* work? What was the error that came up? I hope this helps!
@@Refold I'm using Windows and Google Chrome and I've also tried Chromium Canary. I installed ASB Player and Anki with Anki Connect I followed The step and got all set but the fields doesnt upgrade as I choose The deck and they never match!
Sentence Mining doesn't seem to work well for beginners because they don't understand 80-90% of whole sentences anyways. Just FYI Beginners. My question is, At what point(level) can you Actually start using Sentence Mining in your studies? (Number of words, amount of grammar, i.e. level of fluency)
If you're going to do it as a beginner, it's helpful to have a list of the most common words and use that to mine. That's what I did for Czech since there isn't a 1K deck. I found a frequency list and then mined a sentence for each word to help me learn it from a real source. As for when you should start doing sentence mining as an intermediate learner, after around 2000 words known it becomes a very useful activity.
When I try to import the Refold deck i get an error message, "Import failed. Debugging info: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xb5 in position 1: invalid start byte" I am not sure what this means.

@@Refold okay, appreciate your response, thank you so much : )
I am import the file "RefoldMiningDesigns.apkg". But I see the error in the import: "Unable to read file. It probably requires a newer version of Anki to import". Anki version Version 24.06.3 (last version). Thanks for you the help
Impressive!
I only want to see 2 nouns in the dictionary there are any way to do it?
The audio is coming out choppy when recording and on the Anki card. Any suggestions?
This fixed the issue for me
Is there a way to add furigana on top of the kanji with your model? Thank you in advance
@@Refold thanks for your reply

How could you mining the sentence without click on the word? Can you help me? Pls.
Managed to follow installation but getting, "Could not find note to update" when I hit update last card. Any suggestions?
That usually happens when Vocabsieve or Yomitan fails to make a new card to add audio/an image to.
And the most common reason I've found that Vocabsieve or Yomitan fails to make a card is if you already have a card with the same target word on it.
@@Refold Thanks for response...I'll look into that!
Anki is often a strong habit (don't wanna lose that streak!) and will probably also help with keeping you motivated to stick with your language.
can i somehow make the cards smaller? and add furigana on the back of the card? the cards are huge on my pc lol
¿Cómo creaste eso mazos de anki?
hello, the VocabSieve doesn't copy the subtitles automatically
Did you enable the setting in ASBplayer?
I watch things on tablet and mobile 😢 how can we mine sentences on these devices?
Short answer, not really. The options are pretty bad for mobile immersion. With a tablet, you can do some workarounds and do something similar. Here's my full video on the subject: ruclips.net/video/pt9xr888FEA/видео.html
Why can't I turn on my ASB player subtitles on japanese video it's like doesn't see the video or something idk
There's currently a bug caused by a RUclips update (I think). It should be back to normal for finding RUclips subs in a few days.
Hey I followed this new tutorial. I'm using Vocabsiv and PC. ASB player is not grabbing the audio and video when creating cards. Any ideas?
It likely doesn't have "permission" to record things. Maybe try checking the settings and ensuring that it's able to. But, I wonder what site you're using? And with what browser?
@@Refold Netflix, & Google Chrome. It worked when I used the vocabsieve type note and Amazon Prime a few months ago.
How can I add audio to the only word too in the sentence model?
I'm not positive what you're asking, but if you're asking how to add audio for only the target word, that goes in the "word_audio" field. If you're using Vocabsieve, you can set up Forvo as an audio source and it will automatically add it. Or you can use HyperTTS at the end (and an Azure voice) to add TTS audio for words.
@@RefoldThanks, I have other question, how can I put furigana into the sentences or a way to see it when I put the mouse on the sentence?
@@gabrielgallardo5824 To do that, you're going to have to code custom JavaScript. Anki shouldn't be *that* big of a time sync, so I'd recommend just keeping your cards simple and use immersion mediums that have pronunciation and furigana built in.
This is so fucking great and helpful
thank you
Hey, I do not know where to write this but I have a problem with the program “Vocabsieve”, it only shows me the translation from Google Translate which looks very poor, and from another dictionary such as “Wiktionary” no longer. Maybe someone had the same problem? (German)
You'll want to install a local dictionary.
Here's a text guide:
1. Go here docs.freelanguagetools.org/resources.html
2. Find a source you like (I recommend kaikki.org/)
3. Choose your language
4. Choose "all word forms" at the top
5. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click "Download JSONL"
6. Save it somewhere easy to access on your computer.
7. Rename it to (or save as) *namehere*.json (remove the L)
8. Move the file somewhere it's not going to be deleted (I put it in my Vocabsieve folder)
9. Open Vocabsieve configuration
10. In the General tab, click Manage Local Resources, the Import dictionary.
11. Locate and select the file you just moved
12. ???
13. Go to the Sources tab and select the dictionary as a source (drag from the right to the left)
@@Refold Thank you. Have you perhaps checked how this program works with netflix?
@@Refold this is a really useful guideline, thanks! but now subtitles from Netflix are not appear automatically on VocabSieve as you show on your video. Any hints on it?
Is there anyway to sentence mine on mobile?
I made a video about tools on mobile, but the short answer is "no."
It's technically possible, but it's a massive pain in the butt, breaks often and isn't worth it.
I was using jidoujisho from github, and it worked well with RUclips videos, downloaded series, music, etc. The only problem is getting the dictionaries, I used it for en-es and it worked well.
Gold list method?
Are you looking for this video? ruclips.net/video/xi7SCDi4oUE/видео.html
wait when i go to mine from a video it says, "Error: Could not find note to update."
That's cause you're missing something to initially make the cards. You're starting with Vocabsieve or Yomitan, right?
@@Refold Yomitan yeah it can grab sentence cards while reading just not from a video
6:34 from here on you totally lost me, i don't have the same options as you. im lost as what to choose and on what to base my decision...
Are you using Ubuntu???
I set it up on Fedora, and it worked very well.
Blbý (as well as the related noun blbec - idiot) is quite colloquial, used to be consider vulgar when I was kid, nowadays it is commonly used in spoken Czech.
Does anyone here able to use this tool? I didn't manage make it work. I've tried several times following the step by step process! 🤔
I got really frustated!
Oh my god im slovak.
que bonito esta tu chucho
Debugging info:
'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xb5 in position 1: invalid start byte" I am not sure what this means.
Uhhh, neither do I. But I'd say try updating your Anki and see if that fixes it. I've never seen that error before.
