The UPS in ECO mode depends on the DC from the batteries, If the UPS battery breaker breaker is opened while in ECO mode you will get a "shut down" imminent alarm which scares the crap out of UPS service technicians.

Why does the DC link have such a high potential as compared to the battery string voltage? Why not have the battery string and DC link voltages the same?
