  • There are few things more magical in this world than hundreds of dolphins racing through the wild Monterey Bay on a foggy fall morning.
    For the last week, a superpod of common dolphins hundreds strong has been racing the Monterey Bay, hot on the tails of billions of baitfish. This video was filmed on Labor Day just off of Point Pinos in Pacific Grove, and is being played back at half speed.

    I actually saw a couple of superpods between 1989 and 1992 on the USS Wadsworth. We were doing radar tests off of San Diego, using our APUs (steerable electric motors) to spin in place, and they kept coming by the hundreds to investigate and frolic around the ship. It's rather interesting to see lines of 20 to 30 dolphins all jumping in a synchronized line together.

    I live in SoCal and have taken numerous multi day trips on fishing boats off San Pedro all the way to Dana point. This video reminds me of a trip we took a few years ago to Clemente island. It was a very boring unproductive trip... that’s fishing, but what made that trip extra special was the super pod we ran into in the middle of nowhere on the way back to port... I still have the video on my phone. Out of the blue, the water off the bow started to boil and everyone started to get excited thinking it was a school of tuna... turned out to be a superpod of dolphins, I forgot what they were called but most of them had shorter rostrum/beak. Other boats soon appeared and started to chase the pod... we did for awhile but the pod was heading a different direction than us so we broke off../ never ever going to forget that. Right now, we are gettingready to go out. A lot of sushi grade bluefin to 200lbs are of just off Newport Beach... maybe we get lucky again and see a superpod😊

      Thanks so much for sharing! With that note on the shorter rostrum, there's a good chance you were seeing Pacific white sided dolphins!

    Dolphins really are amazing. Especially the way they play piano when in a superpod.
    Color me skeptical though. I think they're sampling and using autotune.

      Great question! The dolphins were chasing a huge school of anchovies back and forth along the Pacific Grove and Monterey coastline. They later broke off away from shore to feed on the leftovers around a large group of humpback whales.

    • @trebor3377
      @trebor3377 6 лет назад

      Thank you for your reply. As a follow up question if you wouldn't mind is it typical for a large school of anchovies of that size to be close to shore? I was curious as to whether the group of humpback whales in effect herded the anchovies close to shore or whether there were other factors at work.

    This is beautiful and thank you very much. I'm a diver and know that the sound of that boat following and filming them is extremely loud underwater through human ears. It is far worse for sea creatures. See the documentary Sonic Sea, the pdf link is attached. The boat engine shut off and a drone video would have been ideal for the dolphins. sonicsea.org/sites/default/files/IFAW_OceanNoiseReport_WEB_spreads.pdf
