- There are few things more magical in this world than hundreds of dolphins racing through the wild Monterey Bay on a foggy fall morning.
For the last week, a superpod of common dolphins hundreds strong has been racing the Monterey Bay, hot on the tails of billions of baitfish. This video was filmed on Labor Day just off of Point Pinos in Pacific Grove, and is being played back at half speed.

Beautiful! I could watch them all day!
Where there's Tuna, Dolphins follow! Well done! Thanks! Rox
So Long and Thanks for All the Fish!
Fenchurch! I love you!
We're all very fortunate to witness something this spectacular in an Ocean that is changing way too fast
It's just a dolphin.
I actually saw a couple of superpods between 1989 and 1992 on the USS Wadsworth. We were doing radar tests off of San Diego, using our APUs (steerable electric motors) to spin in place, and they kept coming by the hundreds to investigate and frolic around the ship. It's rather interesting to see lines of 20 to 30 dolphins all jumping in a synchronized line together.
Thank you for sharing! Dolphinately sounds like a good time.
Yep, I used to see them when I was underway on the USS John Rodgers DD983. They are a very inquisitive animals and really fun to watch.
I live in SoCal and have taken numerous multi day trips on fishing boats off San Pedro all the way to Dana point. This video reminds me of a trip we took a few years ago to Clemente island. It was a very boring unproductive trip... that’s fishing, but what made that trip extra special was the super pod we ran into in the middle of nowhere on the way back to port... I still have the video on my phone. Out of the blue, the water off the bow started to boil and everyone started to get excited thinking it was a school of tuna... turned out to be a superpod of dolphins, I forgot what they were called but most of them had shorter rostrum/beak. Other boats soon appeared and started to chase the pod... we did for awhile but the pod was heading a different direction than us so we broke off../ never ever going to forget that. Right now, we are gettingready to go out. A lot of sushi grade bluefin to 200lbs are of just off Newport Beach... maybe we get lucky again and see a superpod😊
Thanks so much for sharing! With that note on the shorter rostrum, there's a good chance you were seeing Pacific white sided dolphins!
Such streamlined, rhythmic grace and beauty as they swim!
Full screen only! Now that is something you don’t see in Minnesota!
AWESOME!
Wow that’s so cool!
That looked so much fun and i bet it was i hope you enjoyed it
Duck at 0:19 going "what the qu'ck?"
I've had this experience. It is totally fantastic.
I cried from how peace full and beautiful this was :)
Absolutely magnificent! Such intelligent, sensitive and incredible creatures!
Where do Dolphins spend the wintertime? Always looking forward to a new video from you guys, Thanks!
Dolphins really are amazing. Especially the way they play piano when in a superpod.
Color me skeptical though. I think they're sampling and using autotune.
*God* created such beautiful creatures.
Cali is awesome.
I wonder how they all agree on where to go and when to take a break from swimming. Is there a leader of the pod that all the other dolphins follow?
Gee - didn't know I wuz looking at a "GAM" of dolphins - thanks for the correction. I learned sump tin 2day.
Monterey you should add a dolphin tank
Could you upload a version of this pod without the music overlay? Be so peaceful if just the soft wave sounds vs that music! Please!
Learn what 'Mute' means.
I muted it but I must agree the piano was annoying. Great footage.
She doesn't want silence; she wants to hear only the sounds of the water.
Unfortunately, the wind sheer on the phone's microphone made for very bad natural audio that is rather jarring.
What was the piece of music that you used for this video? Please share it.
"Off to Japan!"
NO! Stay away from Japan! Not a safe place for anything resembling a whale.
How many individuals?
I was reading an article which included this video that dolphins are not normally found in a group of this large size so close to shore. What is bringing them close to shore?
Plastic straws..... they are running away from plastic straws!!!
They're planning a land invasion.
Protest demonstration!
Great question! The dolphins were chasing a huge school of anchovies back and forth along the Pacific Grove and Monterey coastline. They later broke off away from shore to feed on the leftovers around a large group of humpback whales.
Thank you for your reply. As a follow up question if you wouldn't mind is it typical for a large school of anchovies of that size to be close to shore? I was curious as to whether the group of humpback whales in effect herded the anchovies close to shore or whether there were other factors at work.
Can you please share the piece of music that you used with this video. I can't seem to identify it any other way. Thanks!
Hey Heidi, the track is Tides by Ben Beiny from premiumbeat.com
This is beautiful. But I would like to make a correction - "pod" is the name for a group of whales. The proper term is a "gam" of dolphins. Picky picky picky.
Bob Roberts
Now that's about the first real laugh I've had all week!!
Yea, if they are typical, leftist, socialist wannabes. The imbeciles screaming at the Kavanaugh hearing would be a pod of idiots.
Absolutely, because Kavanaugh supports foreign involvement in superpacs, so the Russians need him on the SCOTUS.
As expected, can't read anything on RUclips without a Trump cult moron showing up.
Numerous sources say "pod" or "school" is the correct term for a group of dolphins. Found only one source for "gam" and they applied it to porpoises, not dolphins.
Wow! But, where was Sigourney Weaver? :-)
Narrating our programs on the back deck ;)
Wow, those are common
This would have looked really cool from the air...
It is scary that a person gave this a thumbs down.
It sucks that they added music.
Maybe they gave it a thumbs down because the video was too short!
One of them is definitely because of the music.
Some people just like to watch the world burn Master Way... er sorry.
What baitfish are they chasing?
Mackerel and anchovies have been abundant in the bay recently!
Does that boat protect the dolphins somehow from prop injury?
I thought that at first, then realized this was probably filmed using a drone flying at sea level... I hope.
Is that legal? Don't you need to be 50 yards away from marine mammals?
There's one in every thread.
I was wondering if it wasn't a drone, from the distance and angle.
There's now two, I was wondering the same thing. It doesn't happen too often to dolphins, more often whales...but have you ever seen a dolphin with propeller blade scars JERRY? HAVE YOU JERRY!?

Here's a dolphin mega-pod off Point Dume Malibu I filmed with my drone in May:

Impressive folks aren't out there with depth charges.
Flipper and all his friends.
If you like this check out "Flipper", a 1960's TV show that featured Flipper the dolphin. Also worth mentioning was the 1973 movie Day of the Dolphin with George C. Scott.
I’ve eaten this type of dolphin before.
This is beautiful and thank you very much. I'm a diver and know that the sound of that boat following and filming them is extremely loud underwater through human ears. It is far worse for sea creatures. See the documentary Sonic Sea, the pdf link is attached. The boat engine shut off and a drone video would have been ideal for the dolphins. sonicsea.org/sites/default/files/IFAW_OceanNoiseReport_WEB_spreads.pdf
The dolphin at the head of the pod screams first
It doesn't scream anything other than being at the ocean.

This is very beautiful. But, please Monterey Bay Aquarium, understand that the persistent logo in the upper right corner is really unpleasant. It detracts from the beauty of your subject matter and the elegance of your work. Consider removing them, please.
Visiting their buddies in jail?
Why'd you have to ruin it with music?
I'm sorry that you don't have a "mute" feature on your computing machine, that has to suck.
That's not the point, dumbass. Why overlay a musical track over the natural ambiance of the scene?
it looks like this video was photoshopped
Let's see they hunt with sound (echo-location) because it travels so well underwater... let's drive our boat full throttle right in front of them...
I thought that at first, then realized this was probably filmed using a drone flying at sea level.
What are they protesting?
DJT, of course! Aren’t we ALL?
the dolphins are really beautiful but the video would have been much more pleasant and relaxing with digital stabilization and a bit of color correction. 😔
The video is fine.
a) video is slo-mo (about 1/2 actual speed -- watch the water splashes) b) don't know that digital stabilization would work well on a moving boat; you'd need Stedi-Cam.
Is there anybody that thinks SeaWorld & all other jailers of these magnificent creatures should not release them?
horrible take. look how beautifully they thrive when free and not enclosed in an unlivable space. seaworld is cruel
These people crack me up wine all day about the dolphins and whales then chase them around literally driving in front and probably on them for "sience". Looks more like harrasment. When us fisherman are out we DO NOT get that close! Especially while underway... some people...
