I’m Johanna Rothman, and this is 60 Seconds of Johanna’s Writing WIP for May 10, 2024, where I read an excerpt of just a minute of some writing in progress.
This excerpt is from the speaking book.
There is no such beast as a "standard" panel presentation. Here is what is common to all panels:
    * There are several panelists, each of whom has some expertise to answer the questions.
    * Someone, a moderator or a facilitator, will queue the questions from the audience.
    * Most panels do not last more than an hour in duration. They might take less time.
Some panels require that panelists present a short position paper about the topic. Others don't even choose the questions to ask before the panel starts.
I prefer panels that require a little preparation and that limit each panelist's introduction to two sentences. That allows us to explore topics and offer the audience value in contrasting opinions.
Panels have plenty of chances to go awry. I've been on panels where the facilitator allowed one panelist to monopolize the entire time. That's an even worse problem when there are more than five panelists in a relatively short panel.
