  • More SEC expansion rumors are swirling but why? North Carolina and Kansas are now potential targets but who else and could other sports finally be playing a role? Virginia, Clemson, Oklahoma State, West Virginia? Is basketball finally being considered or is that wishful thinking? What about NC State or Duke coming with UNC? Brian Kelly was honest and got attacked. And new win totals for the SEC are out in 2024, what are the top bets on the board for SEC teams in 2024?

SEC adding Kansas and UNC would give conference bragging rights as conference of blue bloods in basketball

The SEC already has enough football powerhouses and doesn't need anymore. If we keep adding more football-first schools it is going to cannibalize the win/loss records of the current members even more than it already has. Personally, I would prefer that the next round of additions have a stronger basketball focus so it doesn't make the football schedule even harder for current members. Adding UNC, Duke, UVA, and Kansas would allow the SEC to dominate just about EVERY sport without making the football schedule more difficult. The SEC would become THE premier college athletics conference of the United States...period.

Totally agree, the SEC has all the Football and Baseball it needs, but Basketball needs to be addressed. If they get UNC, NC State and maybe Duke they would have all the basketball it needs .. not sure I want Kansas.

@@deantaylor6919 I'm generally indifferent on Kansas as it stacks up against a school like NC State. Either would be fine if the purpose is to add basketball. However, adding Kansas would renew the Kansas/Missouri rivalry game and add another flagship university in a new state. So there are pros and cons with each.

Most valuable asset in college sports is NCAA Tournament (1.3 billion annually). I have been saying this for years: If a league can pull the top blue blood basketball programs they will force the NCAA Tournament to disband or completely redistribute the revenue. The four programs: UK, KU, UNC, Duke, if in one conference will be worth as much as the top football programs. It sounds crazy, but those four programs account for probably 30% - 40% of college basketball fans nationwide. Where they go, so goes college basketball.
Imagine if a league was able to have those four teams. That league then created a post season tournament for its members and 52 invitation only teams from around the country. The league kept half of the 1.3 billion in revenue and split the remaining half amongst all the non-member schools. Would any schools still participate in the NCAA tournament? Even if the tournament had only half the revenue of the NCAA tournament total, it still provides far more financially than the NCAA Tournament currently does to participating schools.
What if the NCAA was forced to change its payout structure to closely align with the CFP? To put this in perspective... B1G distributed 800 million to all members, SEC distributed 750 million. Having a monopoly on college blue blood basketball programs might be worth 500 million per year.
Another thought is why not just breakaway completely in basketball if a league has those four. Then the league ask another 10 schools to join as basketball only members (30 schools in league). Create a league like the NBA, but for college. At the end of the year invite the 34 best non-league teams to join all the league teams in an end of year tournament. Offer membership and relegation based on tournament performance.
If you have Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, and North Carolina the television money will follow you where ever you go. Those four teams drive a gross amount of the overall college basketball ratings.

It ooks like non-conf games may not even exist in the coming super-conference era, so I hope the four ACC rivals to SEC teams all get in (Clemson, FSU, Louisville, Georgia Tech) because those annual trophy matchups are must be preserved.

not sure where they will go or not go. I do know that the athletic dept is one of the most profitable in the country and the endowment is huge. Its not like they bring zero to the table. Kansas prefers the Big 10 though for sure.
